Air India plane crash: Govt constituted high-level committee meets, looks into possible causes

Hindustan Times6 hours ago

New Delhi, A high-level multi-disciplinary committee, set up by the government to look into the Ahmedabad plane crash, on Monday deliberated on various possible theories that could have led to the country's worst air disaster in decades.
The panel, chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, listened to the opinions of various stakeholders about the possible causes of the aircrash and deliberated on steps to be taken to check future occurrence of any such accident, sources said.
In the first meeting of the panel here, the sources said, the focus of the participants was to analyse the possible causes of the aircrash and how to go about in "formulating Standard Operating Procedures for preventing such occurrences in the future".
Since a separate investigation is also being carried out by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau , which is looking into the technical aspects of the crash, the panel discussed about the possible causes and lesson to be taken from it, the sources said.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Saturday said while the AAIB investigation will handle the technical aspects, the high-level committee will provide a holistic, policy-oriented roadmap for future safeguards.
Those who attended the meeting on Monday include representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Home Ministry, Indian Air Force, Intelligence Bureau, Gujarat government, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, among others.
The committee is expected to submit its report within three months.
The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane that crashed on Thursday in Ahmedabad was recovered from the site on Friday evening while officials have also confirmed that the Cockpit Voice Recorder has been found, a crucial discovery to help ascertain the possible cause of the accident.
The aircraft from Ahmedabad to London crashed soon after takeoff on Thursday afternoon. Out of 242 people on board the plane, only one person survived.

DMK and ‘conspirators within' responsible for confusion within PMK: Anbumani

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday said that the ruling DMK and 'conspirators within' were responsible for the ongoing intra-party confusion. However, he did not substantiate the charge. The DMK wants to electorally weaken the PMK, he claimed. 'Neither Ayya (his father Ramadoss) nor myself is responsible for all the confusion. DMK is the villain. Even within our party there are conspirators. DMK cannot do anything directly and face us on the ground. They want to break the party to win in the elections. They will not succeed,' he said at the PMK's general council meeting in Kancheepuram. Mr. Ramadoss had earlier blamed Mr. Anbumani for giving him 'sleepless nights' and had termed making the latter the Union Health Minister (2004-09) as 'a big mistake'. 'Stalin betrayed Vanniyars' Meanwhile, Mr. Anbumani contended that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin realised that the Vanniyar community will not vote for the DMK because of their 'betrayal' in the 10.5% internal reservations for Vanniyars within Most Backward Classes (MBC). 'DMK betrayed the Vanniyar community and Ayya for over four years. They kept saying that they will implement the reservations, over and over again. They lied inside the State Assembly, and outside. We have met him [Mr. Stalin] so many times and he kept on re-assuring us. What is stopping you [Mr. Stalin]? You have all the powers? You are the Chief Minister. You have the Backward Classes commission. You duped us. You made us a promise and betrayed us,' he alleged. Acording to Mr. Anbumani, the Supreme Court had said that Vanniyar reservations can be given if it is backed with appropriate data. 'Are we asking this only for us? Give it to every community based on their population and social backwardness. They duped us. Now, after seeing the crowds gathered at the Vanniyar conference, Stalin got scared and understood that Vanniyars will not vote for him. So, now they are trying to weaken the party,' he said.

Domestic workers urge Union government to enact law for fair wages, social security

In the 25 years that R. Rajeshwari has been a domestic worker, only in the last 10 years did she come to know about her right to a weekly holiday and bonus. 'We think domestic work is not important. Back in the village, people don't value workers who clean the house or the bathroom. But now, we understand the dignity and social security in the work,' she said at an event here on Monday. On the occasion of the International Domestic Workers Day, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) urged the Union government to enact a legislation ensuring decent work, fair wages, social security and legal rights to domestic workers. 'Domestic work helped me to educate my daughter only in a matriculation school. Its vital that we receive better wages and that people recognise our work as important,' said Rajeshwari. Better awareness needed Speaking at an event organised on the occasion, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan said, 'Even with the government's support, there is a need for better societal awareness. A lot of improvements for women have come about through law. However, many problems persist due to constraints faced within the family set up.' Further, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust submitted a petition to the State government to extend the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act to domestic workers, revise their existing minimum wage to ₹100 per hour and establish regulations and monitoring mechanisms for domestic worker recruitment by agencies to prevent exploitation, among other demands. Member of Parliament Sasikanth Senthil, Member of Legislative Assembly of T. Nagar J. Karunanidhi, District Judge and Deputy Secretary District Legal Services Authority S. Vengadalakshmi, chief functionary TNDWWT Josephine Amala Valarmathi and members of the TNDWWT also spoke at the event.

Centre issues Census notification, to be held in two phases

New Delhi: The Registrar General of India (RGI) on Monday issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census with caste enumeration in 2027. Top sources have indicated that the primary focus of the exercise will be on capturing caste, rather than class. Each person may have to mention his/her religion and caste, they added. Sources suggested there is no unified single list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) as it varies from state to state as one caste may be under OBC category in one state and in the general category in another. "And there are two separate lists of OBCs maintained -- one by the Centre and another by the state," a top official added. The census would include a variety of questions to find out economic disparity so that this census could be used for selecting beneficiaries for various centrally-sponsored welfare schemes and may replace the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011, according to multiple people involved in the exercise. There are also indications that preparation of a detailed questionnaire could start as early as next month. According to the RGI notification, the census will be carried out with a reference date of October 1, 2026 in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027 in the rest of the country. "The reference date for the said census shall be 00.00 hours of March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand," it said. The massive exercise will be carried out by around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh census functionaries armed with digital devices. A provision for self-enumeration would also be made available. The census will be conducted in two phases. In phase one - Houselisting Operation - the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. In the second phase - Population Enumeration - the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. Stringent data security measures would be followed to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage, according to the home ministry officials.
