Domestic workers urge Union government to enact law for fair wages, social security

The Hindu16-06-2025
In the 25 years that R. Rajeshwari has been a domestic worker, only in the last 10 years did she come to know about her right to a weekly holiday and bonus. 'We think domestic work is not important. Back in the village, people don't value workers who clean the house or the bathroom. But now, we understand the dignity and social security in the work,' she said at an event here on Monday.
On the occasion of the International Domestic Workers Day, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) urged the Union government to enact a legislation ensuring decent work, fair wages, social security and legal rights to domestic workers.
'Domestic work helped me to educate my daughter only in a matriculation school. Its vital that we receive better wages and that people recognise our work as important,' said Rajeshwari.
Better awareness needed
Speaking at an event organised on the occasion, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan said, 'Even with the government's support, there is a need for better societal awareness. A lot of improvements for women have come about through law. However, many problems persist due to constraints faced within the family set up.'
Further, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust submitted a petition to the State government to extend the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act to domestic workers, revise their existing minimum wage to ₹100 per hour and establish regulations and monitoring mechanisms for domestic worker recruitment by agencies to prevent exploitation, among other demands.
Member of Parliament Sasikanth Senthil, Member of Legislative Assembly of T. Nagar J. Karunanidhi, District Judge and Deputy Secretary District Legal Services Authority S. Vengadalakshmi, chief functionary TNDWWT Josephine Amala Valarmathi and members of the TNDWWT also spoke at the event.

Time for states to reclaim federal rights legally: CM

Chennai: The time has come for states to reclaim federal rights constitutionally, said chief minister M K Stalin , accusing the Union govt of snatching the powers of states in key sectors, including education and health. Delivering his Independence Day address after hoisting the tricolour at Fort St George on Friday, Stalin said that at a time when states working closely with people need more funds and autonomy, the Union govt was doing the opposite by snatching away powers. "State govts are forced to depend on the Union govt due to the discrimination in devolution of funds, policies, and court judgments," he said. Such constant struggles of getting basic rights and funds through arguments and legal battles do not bode well for a federal country, Stalin added: "This will also hinder the state's growth and national progress. Only when states grow independently and distinctively will the country truly develop, he said. Minister sounds alert over 18 dilapidated crest gates at Tungabhadra Reservoir

Koppal: The minister in charge of Koppal district, Shivaraj Tangadagi, has sounded a word of caution, saying that 18 out of the 33 crest gates at are in critical condition, with six of these impeding the flow of water into the river. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a media briefing, following Friday's Independence Day celebrations here, Tangadagi said the dam safety committee's evaluation has revealed that 18 crest gates need to be replaced immediately, apart from one other gate that was lost earlier. However, the company that was given the tender for repair and replacement work said the process would take a minimum of eight months. "The dam safety committee conducted a thorough inspection of all the 33 crest gates of the 72-year-old Tungabhadra Dam and assessed their capacity. According to their report, 18 gates are almost completely worn out and need immediate replacement. The 19th crest gate is still awaiting installation," said Tangadagi, adding that the tender for the replacement of all gates has been finalised. "Due to the malfunction of the crest gates, the reservoir is currently storing a maximum of only 80 TMC feet of water," he said. Though he assured that there will be no shortage of water for the first crop, Tangadagi added: "The Tungabhadra Board (TB) has resolved to supply water for one crop. Therefore, farmers are urged to cooperate." "If the inflow exceeds 1.5 lakh cusecs, it will pose a challenge to release water from the reservoir. Hence, measures are being implemented to prevent such a scenario," he further said. The minister said TB ought to include officials from both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. "Despite numerous appeals from the Karnataka govt, the Union govt has remained unresponsive. Additionally, the TB has postponed installation of the dam gates," he said. On August 14, TB officials who inspected the construction site of the crest gates near Adavi Somapur village in Gadag district told the contractors that "all 33 crest gates of the dam must be replaced by June 2026". Delhi Confidential: Sky Not The Limit

At an event Thursday, celebrating the deepest underwater human dive by two Indian aquanauts, Union Minister Jitendra Singh couldn't resist drawing a parallel with the country's space mission. India's two big dreams — sending humans to space and to the bottom of the ocean — he said, seemed to be moving in sync, 'almost like a cosmic–oceanic jugalbandi'. First, an Indian astronaut, Shubhanshu Shukla, travelled to space on a foreign spacecraft. Not long after, Indian aquanauts Commander (Retd) Jatinder Pal Singh and R Ramesh plunged into the depths of the Atlantic on a foreign submersible. Both missions are opening doors to more international tie-ups. And both are poised to play a big role in the country's Viksit Bharat story. The best part: in 2027, if all goes to plan, homegrown tech will carry an Indian into space and another to the ocean's floor. This back and forth, Singh said, wasn't exactly choreographed, but he wouldn't be surprised if it kept playing out in the years to come. As the last date for nomination of candidates for the vice presidential election nears, the BJP parliamentary board is likely to meet on August 17 (Sunday) to finalise the name of the ruling alliance's candidate. The NDA parties have already authorised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president J P Nadda to select the nominee. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah called on Nadda late Friday evening, triggering speculation about the possible names, but some BJP insiders said the announcement of the chosen candidate would most likely be made close to the final date of nominations on August 21 (Thursday).
