Domestic workers urge Union government to enact law for fair wages, social security
In the 25 years that R. Rajeshwari has been a domestic worker, only in the last 10 years did she come to know about her right to a weekly holiday and bonus. 'We think domestic work is not important. Back in the village, people don't value workers who clean the house or the bathroom. But now, we understand the dignity and social security in the work,' she said at an event here on Monday.
On the occasion of the International Domestic Workers Day, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) urged the Union government to enact a legislation ensuring decent work, fair wages, social security and legal rights to domestic workers.
'Domestic work helped me to educate my daughter only in a matriculation school. Its vital that we receive better wages and that people recognise our work as important,' said Rajeshwari.
Better awareness needed
Speaking at an event organised on the occasion, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan said, 'Even with the government's support, there is a need for better societal awareness. A lot of improvements for women have come about through law. However, many problems persist due to constraints faced within the family set up.'
Further, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust submitted a petition to the State government to extend the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act to domestic workers, revise their existing minimum wage to ₹100 per hour and establish regulations and monitoring mechanisms for domestic worker recruitment by agencies to prevent exploitation, among other demands.

Ludhiana West byelection: Over one-third candidates face criminal charges
As the Ludhiana West assembly byelection draws near, disclosures made in nomination papers of the candidates have revealed that nearly 36% of the contesting candidates are facing criminal charges, with one convicted candidate. According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), five out of 14 candidates in the fray have declared criminal cases against them in their nomination papers. Among these Jatinder Sharma of the National Lok Seva Party is the only declared convicted candidate. As per his affidavit, Kumar was convicted by a Malerkotla court in August, 2010, under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC, relating to cheating and criminal breach of trust. However, he has filed an appeal, and the case is currently under revision before the Punjab and Haryana high court. Former cabinet minister and Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu has disclosed two pending cases. The first involves an FIR lodged under Sections 353, 186, and 34 of the IPC, relating to obstruction and assault on a public servant. The case, registered in February 2024, is currently being heard in the local court where charges are yet to be framed. Ashu is also facing a second case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The charges include Sections 3, 4, 44, 45, and 70 of the Act, dealing with money laundering and concealing proceeds of crime. As in the previous case, no charges have been framed yet. Independent candidate Gurdeep Singh Kehlon has revealed multiple pending cases against him in his affidavit. These include four FIRs registered in 2018 and 2019. Some of these are registered under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, although specific charges and their descriptions remain unspecified in the nomination documents. Another independent candidate, Neetu Shutteranwala, is facing a criminal case registered under FIR dated 21 March 2020. His case, is currently being heard in a Ludhiana court. The charges include Sections 4 and 7 of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, Section 66 of the IT Act, Sections 420, 270, 276, and 188 of the IPC along with Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act. The case relates to allegedly promoting home-made medicines during the COVID-19 period in a manner that breached health norms. Lastly, Navneet Gopi, the candidate from Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), has declared a pending criminal case registered dated March 6, 2023. The case is under Section 283 of the IPC, related to obstruction of the public way. As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) norms, candidates contesting elections are mandatorily required to disclose all criminal cases pending against them in their nomination papers, including the details of FIRs, charges framed, and convictions, if any.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent visit to Lucknow sparked political chatter as he shared the stage with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Karnataka students in Iran seek state government's help for evacuation
Bengaluru: Students from Karnataka studying medicine at Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, reached out to the state govt for help to evacuate them from Iran. The students are currently with Indian embassy officials amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. The students are in constant touch with their parents. The state govt said one of the students and his parents in Bengaluru reached out to it seeking help in their evacuation. "Nine students are from Karnataka, of whom six are from Bengaluru. One student and his parents contacted us over the phone and expressed their fear and desire to return to India. Office of Non-Resident Committee vice chairperson Aarti Krishna wrote to the ministry of external affairs requesting it to take steps to immediately bring back the students. We are yet to hear back from them," said a senior official. "We are in constant touch with the officials concerned and are personally monitoring the situation," he said. "The students are unable to sleep at night. The conflict zones are 15-20 minutes away from their campus. They can see missiles flying over their hostels. They are extremely anxious and reached out to the university and the Indian embassy," said Fayaz Ali, father of a student in Iran and resident of Austin Town in Bengaluru. According to the parents, there are around 400 Indian students in the university. Exams were underway for the students. "They were supposed to come back by August after the exams get over. However, the exams stopped midway," said Shabab Zehra, mother of Nadeem Hussain. Nadeem is a second-year student at the university. "We are worried that the conflict will escalate and the students will be affected. We want them to come back safely as soon as possible," she said. "The embassy created a WhatsApp group with parents and students, and we are constantly kept posted on the developments. Currently, the students are being taken to a safer city," Fayaz said. Relatives in the state say there are students in other universities too. Hassan Abbas Syed, a class 12 student at Alipur, Gowribidanur, said his sister is pursuing her fourth-year BDS at Tehran University of Medical Sciences where there are three more from Karnataka. "They are being transported to a safer location in North Iran. One of their hospitals is very close to the conflict zone, and a blast happened quite close to it. When I last spoke to my sister, she said they have been instructed not to disclose the location but are being shifted and are in safe hands. Her internet connection has been patchy, and we have not been able to communicate frequently," he said. Union minister HD Kumaraswamy said on X that he spoke to several Kannadigas stranded in Israel via video calls and enquired about their well-being and safety. "I assured them of taking urgent steps to ensure their safe and speedy return to their homeland and will hold talks with @MEAIndia." He said he informed the students that the Union govt has taken "all necessary measures for the safety of Indian citizens in conflict-affected foreign countries..."
