Minister Geetha Jeevan inaugurates three-day industrial exhibition in Thoothukudi

: Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan said that a conducive environment is being created in Tamil Nadu for the new entrepreneurs to start business, at the inauguration of the industrial exhibition of Thoothukudi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (THUDITSSIA) here on Friday. The sixth edition of this exhibition is being organised at AVM Kamalavel Mahal in Thoothukudi and is to be conducted till Sunday. Highlighting target set by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to achieve one trillion economy by 2030, Ms. Geetha Jeevan noted that Tamil Nadu is actively working towards it. She added that as part of ensuring inclusive growth across the state, industries are now being set up across all regions and Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) have been signed for ₹10 lakh crore worth projects. 'A car manufacturing industry has been established in Thoothukudi, and related small micro industries are likely to develop alongside it,' she added. Pointing out the 11.19% economic growth rate of Tamil Nadu, the minister said that each one of the industries has contributed to it. She mentioned that the exhibition will help the entrepreneurs to gain new insights and strategies. The exhibition features around 210 shops, aiming to create new perspectives among the existing and budding entrepreneurs. P. Kathiresa Pandian, Executive Member of THUDITSSIA told The Hindu that the exhibition is being conducted once in every three years with the aim of creating more entrepreneurs. He added, ' This exhibition will help the existing entrepreneurs to connect and expand their knowledge in advancement in technologies. Meantime, students are also invited to see the exhibition, which might instill new entrepreneurial ideas in them.' Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Corporation Commissioner Banoth Mrugender Lal, SKSC N. Dharmaraj, President, THUDITSSIA and other officials and members of THUDITSSIA were present at the event.

World Breastfeeding Day celebrated with cultural events

The 'World Breastfeeding Day' was observed in Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital on Friday. Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan, who inaugurated the celebrations at the Nursing College on the hospital premises, released the breastfeeding awareness song and flagged-off the awareness vehicle, which will visit various parts of the district. She also honoured chubby babies with prizes and nutritious meal gift hampers. Associate Professor of Department of Paediatrics, TKMCH, Kavitha explained in detail about the need for feeding the babies with mothers' milk during the first 1,000 days of birth. TN Department of Social Welfare Secretary Jayashree Muralidharan, Project Director of Integrated Child Development Scheme, Mercy Ramya and Department of Social Welfare Commissioner Sangeetha addressed the participant mothers about the need for feeding the babies with mothers' milk to strengthen their immunity in their early days itself. The breastfeeding awareness song has been penned by Assistant Resident Medical Officer, TKMCH Bepin and sung by Resident Medical Officer, TKMCH Silas Jayamani and Jaya. The nursing students presented cultural events highlighting the importance of breastfeeding. An awareness exhibition was organised for the benefit of pregnant and feeding mothers. Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner Banoth Mrugender Lal, Revenue Divisional Officer, Thoothukudi, M. Prabhu, Dean, TKMCH, Sivakumar and others participated.

Tamil Nadu government intensifies efforts to prevent child marriages, says Minister Geetha Jeevan

Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan said that the Tamil Nadu government has been taking intensive measures to prevent child marriages in the state, while flagging off the World Population Day in Thoothukudi on Friday. Aligned with this year's theme, 'Empowering Youth to Build the Families They Want,' the event, which took place at St. Mary's College, was presided over by Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath. At the event, Ms. Geetha Jeevan flagged off a rally, which saw the participation of college students and volunteers. Addressing the media, she said, 'For the past four years Tamil Nadu government has been conducting continuous awareness campaigns among school and college students to prevent child marriages.' She added that awareness programmes are also being created among women groups and parents. 'Notably such programmes are being intensively carried out in districts such as Tiruvallur, Theni and Madurai,' she mentioned. She emphasised that it is medically recommended that women marry only after the age of 18, as their bodies would be physically prepared for childbirth only after that age. However, recently, some reports from the Medical department revealed that several girls married before 18 have become pregnant. The Minister noted that the government has been meeting with families of underage brides and taking legal action under the law. In many such cases, the girls began to avoid visiting hospitals, fearing exposure. She reiterated that the government is also working to raise awareness among them about the importance of healthcare. At the event she also launched an awareness vehicle that will travel across the district to spread awareness about population control.

In the 25 years that R. Rajeshwari has been a domestic worker, only in the last 10 years did she come to know about her right to a weekly holiday and bonus. 'We think domestic work is not important. Back in the village, people don't value workers who clean the house or the bathroom. But now, we understand the dignity and social security in the work,' she said at an event here on Monday. On the occasion of the International Domestic Workers Day, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) urged the Union government to enact a legislation ensuring decent work, fair wages, social security and legal rights to domestic workers. 'Domestic work helped me to educate my daughter only in a matriculation school. Its vital that we receive better wages and that people recognise our work as important,' said Rajeshwari. Better awareness needed Speaking at an event organised on the occasion, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan said, 'Even with the government's support, there is a need for better societal awareness. A lot of improvements for women have come about through law. However, many problems persist due to constraints faced within the family set up.' Further, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust submitted a petition to the State government to extend the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act to domestic workers, revise their existing minimum wage to ₹100 per hour and establish regulations and monitoring mechanisms for domestic worker recruitment by agencies to prevent exploitation, among other demands. Member of Parliament Sasikanth Senthil, Member of Legislative Assembly of T. Nagar J. Karunanidhi, District Judge and Deputy Secretary District Legal Services Authority S. Vengadalakshmi, chief functionary TNDWWT Josephine Amala Valarmathi and members of the TNDWWT also spoke at the event.

Blood donors felicitated in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli

In observance of World Blood Donor day, Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan has honoured 26 donors with certificates and medals at an event organised in Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital. Speaking at the event Ms. Geetha Jeevan said, 'World Blood Donor day is celebrated every year. This year the program is being organised at the hospital to recognise and honour the persons who donated blood thrice or more than that in a year. It aims to raise awareness among youth about the importance of blood donation, which can save countless lives.' As part of the event, she also flagged off a rally at the hospital to promote awareness on blood donation. Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Dean G. Sivakumar, Resident Medical Officer Silas Jeyamani, doctors, nurses, students and other staff were present. In Tirunelveli, District Collector R. Sukumar honoured the donors at the event organised at Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital. At the event he highlighted that in the Tirunelveli district alone, a total of 11,039 units of blood were collected in the past year and 23,352 blood components were provided to underprivileged patients receiving treatment at the hospital. He added that the blood components collected were extensively used in treating anaemia among pregnant women, injury related trauma cases, cancer patients and those undergoing surgical procedures. Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital Dean Revathi Balan, along with other doctors and medical staff participated in the event.
