Tamil Nadu government intensifies efforts to prevent child marriages, says Minister Geetha Jeevan
Aligned with this year's theme, 'Empowering Youth to Build the Families They Want,' the event, which took place at St. Mary's College, was presided over by Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath. At the event, Ms. Geetha Jeevan flagged off a rally, which saw the participation of college students and volunteers.
Addressing the media, she said, 'For the past four years Tamil Nadu government has been conducting continuous awareness campaigns among school and college students to prevent child marriages.' She added that awareness programmes are also being created among women groups and parents.
'Notably such programmes are being intensively carried out in districts such as Tiruvallur, Theni and Madurai,' she mentioned.
She emphasised that it is medically recommended that women marry only after the age of 18, as their bodies would be physically prepared for childbirth only after that age. However, recently, some reports from the Medical department revealed that several girls married before 18 have become pregnant.
The Minister noted that the government has been meeting with families of underage brides and taking legal action under the law. In many such cases, the girls began to avoid visiting hospitals, fearing exposure. She reiterated that the government is also working to raise awareness among them about the importance of healthcare.
At the event she also launched an awareness vehicle that will travel across the district to spread awareness about population control.

‘Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' medical camps inaugurated in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday inaugurated 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' special medical camp across all 38 districts in the State, marking a major initiative in strengthening public health services. A total of 1,256 camps have been planned across the State. Of these, 1,164 camps will be held in 388 blocks with three camps allocated per block. Following the Chief Minister's inauguration in Chennai, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan lit the ceremonial lamp at a camp held at St. Mary's Boys Higher Secondary School in Thoothukudi. Collector K. Elambahavath, Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital Dean G. Sivakumar and other officials were present at the event. In Kanniyakumari district, Collector R. Alagumeena lit the ceremonial lamp at the camp organised in Carmel Boys Higher Secondary School in Ramanputhur. Speaking at the event Ms. Alagumeena said the camps were being held with the aim of making Tamil Nadu a disease-free state. Thirty camps would be conducted across the district every Saturday, until February. The camp at each venue was divided into three sections for men, women, and pregnant women. After undergoing comprehensive health check-ups, including blood tests and X-rays, patients would be referred to specialist doctors for further consultation. A total of 17 specialists from various departments, including general medicine, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics and dermatology had been deployed to provide expert care. Ms. Alagumeena urged the public to take full advantage of the camps being organised in their areas. Kanniyakumari MP Vijay Vasanth, Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R. Mahesh, Corporation Commissioner Nishanth Krishna and other officials were present at the event.

World Breastfeeding Day celebrated with cultural events
The 'World Breastfeeding Day' was observed in Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital on Friday. Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan, who inaugurated the celebrations at the Nursing College on the hospital premises, released the breastfeeding awareness song and flagged-off the awareness vehicle, which will visit various parts of the district. She also honoured chubby babies with prizes and nutritious meal gift hampers. Associate Professor of Department of Paediatrics, TKMCH, Kavitha explained in detail about the need for feeding the babies with mothers' milk during the first 1,000 days of birth. TN Department of Social Welfare Secretary Jayashree Muralidharan, Project Director of Integrated Child Development Scheme, Mercy Ramya and Department of Social Welfare Commissioner Sangeetha addressed the participant mothers about the need for feeding the babies with mothers' milk to strengthen their immunity in their early days itself. The breastfeeding awareness song has been penned by Assistant Resident Medical Officer, TKMCH Bepin and sung by Resident Medical Officer, TKMCH Silas Jayamani and Jaya. The nursing students presented cultural events highlighting the importance of breastfeeding. An awareness exhibition was organised for the benefit of pregnant and feeding mothers. Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner Banoth Mrugender Lal, Revenue Divisional Officer, Thoothukudi, M. Prabhu, Dean, TKMCH, Sivakumar and others participated.
