Trump praises English-speaking Liberian Prez Boakai for his ‘English'; internet says ‘no sugar coating to his ignorance'

Mint4 days ago
During a White House lunch with African leaders on Wednesday, Donald Trump praised Liberian President Joseph Boakai for his English-speaking skills — even though English is Liberia's official language.
After Boakai gave brief remarks, Trump curiously asked where he had learned to speak English so well. He said, "Thank you, and such good English... Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?"
To this, Boakai indicated he had been educated in his native country. "In Liberia?" Trump asserted. "Yes sir," Boakai said. As he was facing away from the media, it was difficult to read his expression — but his brief, mumbled reply hinted at awkwardness.
Despite his discomfort, Trump, who was surrounded by French-speaking presidents from other West African nations, kept digging.
"It's beautiful English. I have people at this table can't speak nearly as well," he said.
Boakai. a business graduate, can read and write in Mendi and Kissi but converses in Liberia's official tongue and lingua franca -- English.
Liberia was founded in 1822 as a colony for free Black Americans, the brainchild of white Americans trying to address what they saw as a problem - the future for Black people in the United States once slavery ended. English is Liberia's official language, though multiple Indigenous languages are spoken there as well.
The country has a diverse array of indigenous languages and a number of creolized dialects, while Kpelle-speakers are the largest single linguistic group.
US engagement in Liberia began in the 1820s when the Congress- and slaveholder-funded American Colonization Society began sending freed slaves to its shores.

High command says don't, but Congress leaders can't zip it on Chief Minister chatter

The speculation surrounding the leadership dynamics within the Karnataka Congress shows no sign of abating, as party leaders continue to issue conflicting public statements on whether Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will serve the full five-year July 13, Karnataka Minister KN Rajanna asserted that Siddaramaiah would indeed continue as Chief Minister for the entire tenure. 'Yes, Siddaramaiah will be Chief Minister for five years. If change is there, only the high command and MLAs can do (it). I think both are not ready to change now,' he added that it would be premature to decide on the leadership for the 2028 election cycle. 'Can anyone do an election without him (Siddaramaiah) in the Congress party? 2028 MLAs will decide who'll be Chief Minister. It won't be decided now. All leaders including Siddaramaiah must be included for the next election. MLAs will then decide.' Rajanna also remarked that Siddaramaiah is unlikely to take up a national post in Delhi, noting, 'Siddaramaiah will never go to Delhi, he doesn't know Hindi either.'On Monday (July 14), Congress MLA from Mandya, Ravi Kumar Ganiga, offered a counter to the narrative by expressing support for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's future elevation. 'DK Shivakumar will become Chief Minister when the time comes,' he said.'138 MLAs support both DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah. When the time is right, DK Shivakumar too will become Chief Minister. When time and circumstance align, good things will happen. He definitely deserves to become Chief Minister, and he will become Chief Minister.'Ganiga dismissed Opposition attacks, stating, 'While BJP state chief (BY) Vijayendra calls it a revolt, we believe in the mantra of peace. We will not respond to the opposition's remarks. This is a matter left to the high command's decision.' Reiterating party unity, he said: 'Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have made their stance clear. All MLAs stand with both leaders. When the time comes, DK Shivakumar will become the Chief Minister.'Meanwhile, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge distinguished the party high command from individual leader remarks and called for internal discipline. Responding to KN Rajanna's comments, he said, 'The High Command does not function based on the whims and fancies of any individual leader. They follow a proper process, they come, evaluate the party, assess the performance of office-bearers and the government. So, it doesn't matter what I or anyone else personally thinks.'Kharge emphasised that public remarks serve little purpose. 'If anyone wants to say something, they should say it in the right forum. Coming to the media and making statements has no value, it's nothing but nuisance value.'- Ends IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

Uproar in Chhattisgarh assembly over RI exam anomalies; Congress demands CBI probe, walks out

Chhattisgarh Assembly RAIPUR: Raipur: Opposition Congress staged a walkout in the Chhattisgarh Assembly on the first day of monsoon session on Monday, over alleged irregularities in the RI examination and demanded a CBI probe into the matter. Replying to the question raised during the Question Hour, revenue minister Tankram Verma admitted anomalies and informed that the case is with EOW, assuring strict action against the guilty before the next session. The Monsoon Session of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly began with uproar during the Question Hour over alleged irregularities in the departmental examination for Revenue Inspectors (RI). BJP MLA Rajesh Munat raised the issue, claiming it occurred under the previous Congress government, while the Opposition countered that the exam took place under the current BJP administration in January 2024. Congress MLA and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel demanded a CBI probe. Revenue Minister Tankram Verma acknowledged the irregularities and said a five-member committee had confirmed it. He informed that the case has been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for a detailed probe and promised action before the next Assembly session. Heated exchanges between ruling and opposition members over responsibility and delay in action led to a walkout by Opposition MLAs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flensburg: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo Further, BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar questioned the decision to transfer the probe to the EOW, to which Verma replied that the department itself referred the matter. Earlier, BJP MLA Munat raised the issue, asking the Minister about the status of the Home Department's inquiry, when action would be taken against the culprits, and the total number of candidates who appeared for the examination. The Revenue Minister stated that the recruitment would provide necessary staff to the Revenue Department, streamlining its operations. He mentioned that the examination process began in September-October, 2024 during the previous government's tenure. However, complaints surfaced after the results were declared in February 2024 . A five-member team investigated the matter and found irregularities. The Minister informed the Assembly that even siblings were found seated together in the examination. The General Administration Department had written to the Home Department for an inquiry, which in turn responded that the concerned department was competent to handle the matter. The case has now been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as part of govt's stand on 'zero' tolerance policy on corruption, and an investigation has commenced. Verma affirmed that no one would be spared, and action would be taken against those found guilty, similar to the ongoing inquiry into irregularities in the Bharatmala project. Munat highlighted that the examination was conducted barely a week after the Minister took charge of the department. He questioned why no action was taken despite the investigation by a team of five senior officers confirming irregularities. Verma responded that the inquiry committee concluded that the presented documents did not fall under the category of evidence and the EOW is currently investigating. Munat then accused the Minister of selectively reading the report and offered to table it in the Assembly, alleging that these were all scams from the previous government, including the Public Service Commission. Verma reiterated that stringent action would be taken against anyone found guilty. Munat pressed further, asking if action would be completed before the next session, to which Verma replied that efforts would be made to complete the inquiry and take action before the next session. BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar questioned who decided to hand over the inquiry to the EOW. Tankram Verma clarified that the department itself referred the matter to the EOW for investigation. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel inquired whether the examination took place before or after the current government came to power. Verma confirmed that the examination was held in January 2024 and the results were declared in February. This response led to a strong protest in the Assembly, with opposition MLAs accusing the BJP government of irregularities. Baghel alleged attempts to shield the culprits and asked if the matter would be investigated by the CBI. BJP MLA Dharamlal Kaushik retorted, asking if Baghel trusted the CBI. Following this, the Oppposition staged a walkout from the Assembly. Chandrakar also raised concerns about the recruitment process at Bastar's Shaheed Mahendra Karma University, alleging non-compliance with roster rules and arbitrary practices. Replying to the concern, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said a committee has been formed to investigate the irregularities and action would be taken after the report is submitted. Earlier, the Assembly paid tribute to former Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt and Surendra Bahadur Singh, the former king of Sakti princely state and ex-cabinet minister, following their demise.
