India hosts artificial limbs camp in Guayana to support people with disabilities
The Indian Company Kalpataru Projects International Limited, in collaboration with Guyana's Ministry of Health and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, on Monday (local time) launched an Artificial Limb Donation and Fitment Camp at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre in the Guyanese capital, Georgetown.
The initiative, backed by the Indian High Commission in Georgetown, stands as a testament to India-Guyana friendship and people-centric diplomacy in the Caribbean region.
"A promise kept, a commitment fulfilled. During the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, PM Narendra Modi had announced that India will collaborate with CARICOM in providing artificial limbs to persons with disabilities in the Caribbean region as a mark of our friendship and people-centric diplomacy," the Indian High Commission in Georgetown posted on X.
"It was a new dawn, a new beginning and a new chapter in India-CARICOM partnership," the post added.
According to Guyana's Health Ministry, the project, organised in partnership with India-based Jaipur Foot and the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Seva Samiti, marks a significant step in providing life-changing prosthetic limbs to Guyanese citizens in need.
Addressing the event, Guyanese Minister of Health Frank Anthony expressed gratitude to the Indian Government and Jaipur Foot for their swift collaboration in making this initiative possible.
"This partnership is transformational. Prosthetic limbs do not only restore mobility, they restore independence, dignity, and opportunity," he said.
"For many Guyanese who have lost limbs due to accidents or illnesses such as diabetes, access to affordable prostheses has been out of reach. Through this programme, we are eliminating barriers and giving people a second chance at life," the Minister added.
Among the officials present were Amit Talang, High Commissioner of India to Guyana; Gail Miller-Garnett, High Commissioner of Belize to Guyana; Serena Bender-Peltzwick, Deputy Programme Manager for Health Sector Development at CARICOM, and other dignitaries.
In November 2024, during the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, PM Modi offered assistance to CARICOM countries in seven key areas, including capacity building, agriculture and food security, renewable energy and climate change, innovation, technology and trade, cricket and culture, ocean economy and maritime security, medicine and healthcare.

MP cabinet approves statewide Geeta Bhavans to promote cultural, spiritual learning
Bhopal: In a significant decision aimed at deepening cultural roots and expanding access to spiritual education, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of Geeta Bhavans across all urban local bodies in the state. The initiative, which carries a budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore, will be implemented over the next five years. 'As our chief minister had announced to construct Geeta Bhavans in each district. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the scheme, and all district collectors have been asked to provide land on a token amount of Rs 1 only if land is not available with urban bodies. The scheme is for five years, which means all the districts will have Geeta Bhavan within five years," Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said here after the cabinet meeting. He described the Geeta Bhavan concept as 'unique and inclusive,' noting that the halls will be available free of cost to social, religious, and cultural organisations. To ensure financial sustainability, each Bhavan will include commercial extensions such as shops and service centres. 'Some districts can construct these Geeta Bhavans on a PPP mode, as funding size has not been decided yet,' he said. Each Geeta Bhavan will serve as a community hub for religious study, cultural events, and spiritual discourse. The halls will feature libraries and e-libraries stocked with literature on Indian philosophy, the Bhagavad Gita, and other sacred texts. Facilities will also include auditoriums, cafeterias, and refreshment centres, with seating capacities ranging from 250 to 1,500, depending on the size of the urban body. The architecture of the Bhavans will reflect traditional Madhya Pradesh styles, incorporating local art and murals. Municipal bodies may also collaborate with private partners for construction and maintenance, allowing for flexible implementation across diverse regions. Officials said the initiative will not only provide a permanent venue for spiritual and cultural gatherings but also create employment opportunities and foster a deeper connection between youth and India's philosophical heritage. Religious organisations and literary groups have welcomed the move, calling it a timely investment in the state's cultural infrastructure. With the cabinet's green light and budgetary backing, Madhya Pradesh's Geeta Bhavan network is poised to become a cornerstone of community life and spiritual engagement across the state.

Who is Sudershan Reddy? INDIA bloc's pick against NDA's CP Radhakrishnan for Vice Presidential election
The INDIA bloc on 19 August named former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the Vice presidential election. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the name of the opposition bloc's pick during a meeting with the other allies. Reddy will contest against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance 's nominee, CP Radhakrishnan, in the elections to be held on 9 September. As things stand, the ruling NDA has sufficient votes to secure a victory for Radhakrishnan. The BJP-led alliance holds the edge in the 781-member electoral college with 424 members. The Opposition INDIA bloc, however, wanted to put up a fight by fielding a non-political leader to highlight its commitment for the Constitution and democracy. Reddy's name, it is learnt, was pushed by Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. Reddy is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and the first Lokayukta of Goa. Born on 8 July, 1946, Sudershan Reddy was enrolled as Advocate at Hyderabad with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh on 27 December, 1971. He has practiced in Writ and Civil matters in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. He worked as a government Pleader in the High Court during 1988-90. 'Shri B Sudershan Reddy garu is one of India's most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career including as Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court and Judge of the Supreme Court.
