
The devil waits at every crossroads: a walk between darkness and light on Dartmoor
Today, St Michael de Rupe counts as the highest working church in southern England – poised dramatically on top of a western outlier of Dartmoor's tors. This medieval building casts a striking silhouette over the west Devon landscape, but it also marks the start of the Archangel's Way: a pilgrimage route created in 2021 by the diocese of Exeter that travels 38 miles eastward from here across Dartmoor to a second St Michael's church in Chagford. I chose to walk the route in February when the moor was at its quietest and most mysterious – and though the seas of the famous folk tale had receded, on my visit the storm had not.
Storm Herminia was thrashing through the West Country as I climbed the muddy path to the porch of St Michael de Rupe. Inside, the church had the mood of a ship in a storm. There was the whistle of the wind in the roof: gusts pressing lead-lined glass into ancient panes. The winged figure of Archangel Michael adorned the stained glass behind the altar. In folklore he is the guardian of high places, and the vanquisher of heathen forces that once held dominion over the peaks.
Sitting in the porch, I unfolded a map and considered the path ahead of me. The Archangel's Way passes villages with parish churches, pubs with warm hearths, places where you can find succour and society. However, it also skirts the North Moor – the more desolate and remote half of Dartmoor, where signs of Christendom are still outnumbered by prehistoric pagan edifices, such as stone circles and cryptic megaliths.
In Dartmoor folklore there is barely a crossroads the devil does not frequent to barter for a soul, nor a hill nor stone at which some evil entity claims authority – phantom, beast, horned figure. To walk this route was, in a sense, to walk a line between dark and light. To be a wanderer of the English wilderness for, if not exactly 40 days, then at least about 40 miles.
The path led to Lydford and then climbed the western flank of Dartmoor proper. Green fields turned to bracken the colour of a well-thumbed two pence piece. A final stone cross guarded the approach on Brat Tor: to the south red flags fluttered on poles, a warning sign that the army were conducting live firing exercises nearby.
The storm blew on. The overflow waterfall of the Meldon reservoir flew upwards into massing clouds. I was walking with my friend, Justin Foulkes, a Devonian who has been exploring the moor since he was 15. He pointed out the lonely ruin named Bleak House, and Amicombe Hill, the scene of fires attributed to the devil by residents of the farmland below. Justin was clear that, for him, Dartmoor was never a sinister place. As a teenager he had found himself too anxious to revise for exams at home and so brought piles of textbooks out on to the moor to find focus. 'When you're sitting on top of a bronze age burial chamber it puts everything in perspective,' he said.
After a night on the moor at a friend's near Belstone, further prehistoric remains followed on the second day of walking. First came the Nine Maidens stone circle – the stones said to come alive with the ringing of the church bells (out of earshot in the wind). Lastly came the spectacular Scorhill stone circle – supposedly protected by a magic forcefield which prevents livestock from entering.
Folklore is an errant guide to these relics of an unfathomable past – whose meaning and function are lost to an age before recorded history – indeed an age before climate change helped lead to a large-scale human exodus from Dartmoor's high country.
However, where certainties are absent the imagination steps in to complete the picture. It was perhaps natural for God-fearing folk to populate the moorland with supernatural entities that could thrive in the wild weather and hostile terrain where humans could no longer live.
'Dartmoor is like the sea,' Chloe Axford of the diocese of Exeter later told me. 'It's a rugged, wild and unpredictable place. We wanted to harness the spirituality of the moor in the creation of the Archangel's Way. And also encourage people to visit its churches and chapels, and give them a warm welcome there.'
Eventually, there were signs I was returning to society: a cattle grid, a row of conifers. A country lane winding down to St Michael, Chagford, where snowdrops were sprouting among the graves. Inside the beautiful little church was a rough-hewn sculpture of St Michael – a demon vanquished beneath his foot. Yet, you could still hear the wind pressing upon the rafters, as if Herminia herself was trying to get inside.

The luxury stays are the newest addition to the Caravan And Motorhome Club's campsite on King Charles's Sandringham Estate. I've brought my mother along to road-test the royal escape, along with my 19-year-old twin daughters, and Miss Babs, our not-quite-a-Corgi rescue dog, who's in her element in this rabbit-rich haven. We are all big fans of The Crown and while the chances of bumping into a member of the Royal Family on the 20,000-acre estate are slim, it doesn't stop me hoping to see His Majesty dead-heading petunias as we stroll through the gardens. Our deluxe safari tent is certainly fit for a king. The three-bedroom large deluxe pad sleeps six adults and two children, and even comes with a fancy bathroom featuring a double shower and underfloor heating. There are also premium tents, sleeping five, and deluxe ones for six. As well as a sofa and TV, there's a kitchen with hob, microwave and dishwasher, dining table and a wood-burning stove for cooler days. Our favourite hangout is the spacious wooden veranda which overlooks the Disneyesque scene in the forest, perfect for a safari-style sundowner. We do have squatters, though. UK's Premier Scottish Caravan Site: Camping & Glamping Gold Standard A pair of baby wood pigeons have nested under the chairs on the deck, much to the delight/angst of Miss Babs. And while it might be tempting to soak up the royal grounds, there's also plenty to see and do along the North Norfolk coast. Hunstanton is our closest beach — a sweep of golden sands under candy-stripe red cliffs, it has a charming, kiss-me-quick vibe with arcades, chippies and ice-cream parlours. It also has the county's only seal sanctuary, part of the Sea Life Centre, which rescues and rehabilitates poorly seals found around the coast. A few miles east is Old Hunstanton, a quieter spot where Miss Babs enjoys a romp through the dunes, while my mother insists on a sharpener at The Mariner, a gorgeous 17th-century inn overlooking the sea. There's a lovely scent around these parts, thanks to the sweeping fields of lavender. 'FASCINATING INSIGHT' Which I'm sure is why the twins always slept in late, and not the local cider. Of course, you can't camp at Sandringham and not take a peek into the royal residence. Such is the size of the estate, it's a scenic 40-minute walk from the campsite to the house, or a five-minute drive. It's only open to the public between April and October, though, when the King and Queen are not in residence. And although most of the surrounding royal parkland is dog-friendly, the house and formal gardens are sadly not. While I've got most of my knowledge of the Royal Family from watching The Crown on TV, the house is a fascinating insight into their private life. We're allowed in eight of the ground-floor rooms, including the main drawing room, where the family kick back at Christmas. A warm, familial space with plenty of family photos, comfy sofas and tables laid out with boardgames and puzzles, it is where the late Queen Elizabeth broadcast her first Christmas message from in 1957. 5 Have a drink at The Mariner, a gorgeous 17th-century inn overlooking the sea Credit: Supplied 5 Sandringham is only open to the public between April and October when the King and Queen are not in residence Credit: Getty After exploring the house, we wander along to St Mary Magdalene, the beautiful 16th-century church where the Royal Family attend the Christmas Day service each year. Tiny inside, it has hosted many a monarch over the years, and more recently is where Princess Charlotte was christened. James, a volunteer at the church, says: 'The Royal Family sit at the front, in the good seats, in order of importance.' Afterwards, we drive a couple of miles to Snettisham for a pint in Prince William's local, The Rose & Crown, a few miles from Anmer Hall, the Windsors' former home on the estate. I visited a famous area along the border of England and Wales but made 1 big mistake
Owen Hughes visited two towns on each side of the English-Welsh border and was left scratching his head after making a big mistake on his travels. Living just a stone's throw from the A470 in the north, writer Owen Hughes typically takes a direct route down the heart of Wales to reach the capital, sticking to the same road for the majority of his journey. However, he recently decided to mix things up a bit and explore the border. This was partly fuelled by a long-standing wish to visit Hay-on-Wye, the nation's book capital - a place he had heard so much about but never actually set foot in. The Daily Post reporter also thought it would be a good idea to stop off at another location on his way and opted for Ludlow in Shropshire, famed for its castle and historic centre. Owen revealed: "Compared to the A470, the border route is straighter but busier - so any time you gain in faster stretches is lost in queues. "It's about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Conwy to Ludlow without breaks, so I was ready for a cuppa when I arrived." "Unusually for me, it was just myself on the trip rather than with all or any of the family, or some mates. This made it quieter and cheaper, and I could pick my own in-car listening. "It means you can quietly take things in, but you also miss the banter and sharing the experience, so swings and roundabouts. I parked up in the town centre and took a signposted walk around the castle walls. This fortress was built to secure the border against Welsh raids. " Built by the de Lacy family, beginning in 1085, Walter de Lacy had been part of William the Conqueror's invasion force in 1066. Enormous town walls were constructed in the 13th century, with Ludlow Castle positioned within the perimeter of these fortifications. Whilst it might not rival the magnificence of North Wales' castles, the location still provided a striking spectacle. Owen enjoyed a relaxed walk down to a charming cafe beside the River Teme, relishing a coffee and sandwich in an outdoor seating area overlooking the water. Owen went on to share: "I then wandered to Broadgate, the sole surviving medieval gate, and in this area you can see some sections of the remaining town wall. "The whole place oozes history, and apparently there are almost 500 listed buildings in the town, with medieval and Georgian buildings in the centre. I'm not a huge shopper but did appreciate some of the shop windows and boutique stores. "You could easily stay longer, but my itinerary demanded I move on, and it was back in the car for hour long onwards journey to Hay-on-Wye." This stretch of the journey takes you back over the border into Cymru, with Hay-on-Wye positioned just within the Welsh boundary. The town houses another castle, tracing back to the Norman conquest and attempts to quell Welsh rebellions. Hay Castle was fortified in the 12th century, with a mansion being built in the 17th century. Despite being largely derelict at the start of the millennium, the site has been transformed by the Hay Castle Trust and now operates as an arts and literature centre. "However, I was not here for the castle and parked up to explore some of the more than 20 bookshops in the town," said Owen. Hay-on-Wye is recognised as the 'World's First Book Town', its literary renaissance led by Richard Booth in the 1960s. He had discovered some libraries that were shutting down in America and travelled out there with some mates, where they packed up thousands of books and transported them home. He launched his own second-hand bookshop in the former fire station in 1961. This encouraged others, and soon books from around the globe were pouring into the growing collection of bookshops in the town. It is of course also now renowned for its annual Hay Festival. Owen said, "With so much choice, it is hard to decide where to start. "I went for instinct over any research and popped into one that, for no conscious reason, drew me in. You can then easily get lost in these places with narrow aisles and towering bookshelves. "I was not after anything specific, so it was very much a pick and see approach before something sparked. It was one of four bookshops I went into, and it was lovely to speak to a couple of the owners/staff and ask about recommendations. He continued: "I ended up with a book per shop before deciding to do something a bit different. After a day in my car or walking around towns I felt like a nature inspired pick-me-up and had heard about The Warren - a riverside spot for walking or wild swimming. "I had some gym shorts with me and decided to go and have a short dip, the cold water a tonic for a sore back from driving." Owen added: "After drying off, it was back to the town centre for a quick coffee. Sitting there as the evening drew in and a further couple of hours of driving ahead I thought about my big mistake. "I really should have booked a night - ideally with other people/ person. "There was a lovely atmosphere in the town, and finishing off the day with some food and a few drinks would have rounded off a fascinating day. This is, though, a very good excuse to come back.".

'I stayed in 'enchanting' UK glamping spot by beautiful hikes and thrilling zipwire'
Brits looking for glamping holidays in the UK may want to check out this enchanting spot in North Wales that's tucked away in some of that beautiful Welsh countryside If glamping in North Wales isn't your idea of a luxury getaway, there's one staycation spot that could change your mind. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Snowdonia National Park, Llechwedd Glamping offers unparalleled views and hotel-style comfort while maintaining an outdoorsy, adventurous feel. The safari-style lodges, perched on top of a cliff overlooking a working quarry, provide an idyllic bolthole whether you want to hike, wild swim or explore the area's UNESCO-listed slate landscape. They're part of the newly renovated 4* Plas Weunydd Hotel nestled amongst beautiful Welsh mountains and moorland. I visited in June with my sister Romilly, 23, mum Emma, 62 and our crazy English Pointer, Daphne. From the moment we arrived, it was an adventure. The slope to the cabins is too steep for cars, so the friendly hotel staff ferry you and your luggage to the top in a pickup truck. The dog-friendly glamping lodges felt like a luxury hotel suite, and come complete with a kitchen, plush double bunk beds (sleeps five), an en-suite with hot shower and every conceivable mod-con from super-speed WIFI to rechargeable table lamps. The walls are adorned with old black and white snaps of the slate miners hard at work in the quarry below. The wood-burning stove, basket of logs, firelighters and matches were a much-appreciated touch. As were the hot water bottles in cosy knitted covers, two plug-in heaters, board games (we enjoyed many rounds of the Logo Game!) and tin of dog treats (Daphne couldn't get enough). There's a private deck too but we didn't make use of it much as the British weather wasn't on our side. As for the food and drink, the hotel had a great selection of locally sourced dishes, but we opted for the pizza-making kit and cooked our creations in the lodge's very own al fresco pizza oven. Freshly made dough, Mutti tomato sauce, mozzarella and chorizo are beautifully presented in a wicker basket alongside essential tools like rolling pins, pizza cutters and rustic wooden serving boards. The wind was high on top of the cliff which made lighting the oven a bit tricky, but once away we had piping hot pizza in no time. The breakfast offerings are also top-notch. Glampers can go for a breakfast pack of pastries, cereal, juice and bread delivered to the cabin (£12.99) or, like us, take advantage of the hotel breakfast, which exceeded all expectations. Served in the tastefully refurbished pooch-friendly dining area, visitors can tuck into any variation of a traditional Welsh breakfast (like an English breakfast but with the optional addition of cockles and laverbread!) cooked fresh to order. We kept it safe with with poached eggs on toast followed by yogurts and freshly-baked croissants from the self-service area - all of which went down a treat! Little touches, including the miniature jars of gourmet ketchup and brown sauce, added a high-end feel to the experience. Located in the historic slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and overlooking the Moelwynion mountains, Plas Weunydd is perfectly positioned for those looking to explore the dramatic landscape. For seasoned hikers, Wales' highest peak Mount Snowdon is a 40-minute drive away. But if, like me, you enjoy a more leisurely stroll, Dyffryn Maentwrog woods is a must-visit. Located a 10-minute drive from the hotel, an enchanting circular trail takes you past Llyn Mair lake, built by local landowner William Edward Oakeley as a 21st birthday present for his daughter Mair in 1889. The nearby Victorian ornamental pond and Japanese-style stone seat, built by the family at a similar time, are the perfect spot to take it all in. I particularly enjoyed hearing the distant chug of the Ffestiniog steam railway which runs through the woods. Located next-door to the glamping site is Zip World Llechwedd, one of Wales' most visited attractions. Positioned in amongst the historic slate mines, families and hardcore adrenaline-hunters can take their pick of seven adventures. We braved a ride on Titan, Europe's first four person zip line, featuring two sections of zip lines spanning over a kilometre (£60 per person). Specially converted ex-army trucks take you to a dizzying height of 1,400ft where you catch two zipwires back down to base camp. Although high, we were pleasantly surprised by the ride's leisurely speed, allowing us to take in the stunning views of the quarry below. Those scared of heights can head underground instead to Bounce Below, an enormous underground net adventure where you can jump and slide your way through the disused mine. It's ideal for adults and children from seven years and up whatever the weather and is a great alternative to traditional trampoline parks.
