SpiceJet told to pay Rs 10,000 to passenger for two-day delay in delivering luggage
Sahib Payal, a city resident, alleged that on June 21, 2024, he had booked an e-air ticket with SpiceJet for his travel from Delhi to Ahmedabad for June 24, 2024, to appear in the exam of The Gujarat Flying School, Vadodara, Gujarat, held on June 25, 2024.
'Upon reaching the Delhi airport, the airlines issued a boarding pass, and after which he travelled from Delhi to Ahmedabad on the scheduled date. However, upon reaching Ahmedabad, I found my luggage missing/misplaced by the airlines. I reported the matter to the air staff of the airlines, and I was asked to file a Baggage Irregularity Report (BIR).
'Thereafter, I requested the airlines and their staff to explain the reasons for the delay in delivering the luggage, as I had to travel to Vadodara for my exam. After waiting for some time, when I did not get my luggage, I left the airport to appear for the exam in Vadodara. The next day, I was informed by the airlines that the luggage had been sent to Bengaluru and would be returned to me in a day or so. I, thus, left the airport for Vadodara in the evening by a taxi. Finally, the airlines returned the luggage to me after two days — June 26, 2024,' the complainant alleged.
SpiceJet Airlines in its reply stated that it is not liable for any loss/damage occasioned by delay in the carriage by air of passengers or luggage.
It was further said that the luggage was returned to the complainant within two days from the date of his travel, there is no deficiency in service on the part of the airlines, and the complainant is not entitled to any compensation from the airlines.
The Commission, however, held that '…it stands proved on record that the complainant remained at the airport for a long time waiting for his luggage on the day when he reached the Ahmedabad airport and, thereafter, he left for Vadodara to appear in an exam. The next day, he again visited the airport, but the luggage could not be delivered to him. Only after two days, the baggage was returned to him as a result of which he was harassed for the sheer negligence on the part of the Airlines (SpiceJet Airlines) …'
Thus, partly allowing the complaint, the Commission directed SpiceJet Airlines to pay a lump sum compensation of Rs 10,000 to the complainant on account of mental agony and harassment as well as litigation expenses.

Drug trafficker arrested with smack worth 18 lakh in Jaipur
Jaipur: As part of the city police's ongoing operation against drug trafficking racket, the Crime Branch Sunday arrested a drug trafficker and seized 90 gram of smack worth Rs 18 lakh from his possession in Sanganer. During initial questioning, the accused revealed that the drugs were provided by his brother Ramvilas Tanwar and were meant to be delivered to a person named Pawan Gurjar in the Vatika area of Jaipur. The accused confessed that he brought illegal narcotics from Aklera to Jaipur to fund his lifestyle and personal indulgences. Kamlesh used mobile communication to coordinate with other members of the network and to facilitate on-demand delivery of drugs, particularly in areas densely populated with hostels and paying guest accommodations. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional DCP (Organised Crime) Richhpal Singh and with key coordination by Constable Rajesh of the CST team. The crackdown is part of the ongoing operation Clean Sweep, which aims to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in Jaipur city. Police are now tracing the supply chain further up the ladder and are pursuing leads related to Kamlesh's brother and other potential receivers of the consignment. Police said that they are continuing with these operations with an aim to track down large suppliers of the drug products and also to track down the main delivery points in the city.

Shimla, July 6 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh, revered as Dev Bhoomi for its spiritual heritage and scenic beauty, is now transforming as Khel Bhoomi — a rising land of sporting excellence. A government spokesperson said here today that the state is undergoing a dynamic transformation into a sports powerhouse. The evolution is driven by the government's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure, nurturing young talent, and creating an inclusive sports ecosystem, he said, asserting that Himachal is not only advancing its sporting landscape but also setting an example for other states to follow. At the heart of this change is the construction of a multi-purpose sports complex in Kharedi, Nadaun (Hamirpur district). "With an investment of Rs 65 crore, this facility will include an eight-lane swimming pool, shooting range, wrestling and boxing arenas, kabaddi and yoga centres, along with modern infrastructure for table tennis and badminton. This landmark initiative aims to shape the next generation of sporting talent in the state," he said. "Further boosting infrastructure, the government is setting up a 100-bed sports hostel in Luhnu, Bilaspur, and enhancing facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi Multi-Purpose Stadium in Katasani, Shimla, he added. Indoor stadiums are coming up in Solan, and new sports centres are being developed in Reckong-Peo, Haroli, and Jaisinghpur. Synthetic tracks and field facilities in Hamirpur and Sujanpur are also underway to provide high-performance training environments," he said. A total of Rs 6.01 lakh has been disbursed to 235 athletes for travel support," he said. In a progressive move, student-athletes competing in state and national events are now marked 'present on special leave' instead of absent, ensuring their academic progress isn't hampered by sports participation, said the spokesperson. Acknowledging sporting achievements, the government has significantly raised rewards and Rs 14.77 crore has been distributed among 21 international medallists, and Rs 44 lakh awarded to other top performers, he informed. Through structured training, financial support, and inclusive policies, Himachal is nurturing talent at every level, he maintained, adding that Himachali athletes are making their presence felt on medal tallies nationwide, reinforcing the state's growing prominence in Indian sports. 4 killed as taxi plunges near Rohtang; flash floods ravage Himachal Pradesh
SHIMLA: Four people were killed and another critically injured Sunday morning when their taxi veered off a foggy mountain road at Rahni Nala near Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh and plunged into a deep ravine. The crash came as flash floods triggered by twin cloudbursts overnight pounded Chamba and Mandi, pushing the hill state's monsoon death toll to 78, including road accidents that claimed 28 lives. The estimated damage across the state has climbed to Rs 573 crore. Floodwaters swept away roads, bridges, and water mills, while 63 tourists from Punjab, Haryana, UP, Tamil Nadu, and New Delhi - stuck at Seraj valley - were rescued and brought to Karsog in Mandi after emergency road repairs. Blinding fog may have caused the fatal accident near Rohtang Pass, said DSP KD Sharma. Skid marks on the road showed where the vehicle lost control & swerved off the edge. The deceased were identified as Ranjit Singh, 31, and Harvinder Singh, 27, both from Hoshiarpur in Punjab; Narendra Kumar, 34, the driver from Simsa in Kullu; and Dima Ram, 32, from Karsog. Ravi Kumar, 24, also from Hoshiarpur, remains in critical condition. All passengers, including the driver, worked at a hotel in Manali's Simsa area. Mandi remains one of the hardest-hit districts, with 183 roads still closed. Rescue teams from NDRF and SDRF are using drones to search for missing people. Amid mounting criticism over her delayed response, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut visited Thunag in Seraj valley Sunday. "Though I have no official team or personal fund, I still managed to reach the affected areas. I am also a Himachali and a Pahari," she said. Ranaut defended her absence, saying former CM Jairam Thakur advised her to wait until roads reopened. "PM Modi is abroad but fully aware. Centre has acted swiftly," she said.
