Black Sox men off to powerful start at Softball World Cup

NZ Black Sox have opened their Softball World Cup campaign with back-to-back wins, including a statement victory over world No.1 Argentina.
In a passionate seven-inning contest, the NZ men secured a 4-1 win over the South Americans, after defeating hosts Canada 8-3 in their tournament opener.
The side qualified for the tournament - hosted at Prince Albert, Canada - last July, under new head coach Thomas Makea, a WBSC and Softball NZ Hall-of-Famer, four-time world champion and three-time NZ Player of the Year.

Black Sox pitcher Liam Potts delivered an impressive performance against Argentina, holding their strong batting line-up to just one run.
Potts was named 2024 Softball NZ Men's Pitcher of the Year, after a standout season with club team Parklands Christchurch United (PCU) and Canterbury Red Sox.
He finished the game with an ERA (earned run average) of 0.78. Behind the plate was fellow Red Sox representative and Otago native Cam Watts.
Potts said he had to stay locked in the whole way through, using every bit of energy he had.
"I had to focus on every pitch," he said. "It's hard, very hard, but we won, so at the end of the day, it's worth it."

Potts pitched an entire seven innings and he admitted the plan was always for the starting pitcher to go for as long as they could.
'We do it based on how the teams are feeling or how they're looking in the box," he said. "Today, the boys were looking to hit... but today, I had them."
He said the run support from his teammates allowed him to pitch with confidence.
"The boys were amazing tonight," he said. "They just fired away.
"The boys have turned up and there's no better feeling at the moment."

New Zealand put their name on the scoreboard first at the top of the second inning, with Rhys Evans doubling down the third-base line to bring Reilly Makea home, after a walk and sacrifice bunt.
Argentina levelled the score at the bottom of the inning, after a defensive error put a runner in scoring position and utility infielder Khalil Luna drove to right-field.
The score remained 1-1 until the fifth, when momentum shifted. Second basemen Tane Mumu reached second and was brought home, after a throwing error off Seth Gibson's bunt.
Team captain Cole Evans followed with a double to centrefield, scoring Gibson and extending the lead to 3-1.
In the seventh, Dante Makea-Matakatea led off up the middle, before Gibson brought him home with a drive over leftfield, sealing the game 4-1.
New Zealand have won a record seven men's world softball titles.

The Black Sox are the only unbeaten team in Group A and will come up against Venezuela at 8.30am Friday NZT, needing victory to clinch a sport in the Super Round, which begins Saturday.

Father-son duo part of champion Taieri side
Family matters at the Taieri Bowling Club. The club had a father-son duo in their team that won the New Zealand champion of champions men's fours title in Dunedin at the weekend. Andy McLean and father Grant were joined by Otago bowls great and national coach Mike Kernaghan and Geoff Griffiths. The Taieri four swept through unbeaten at the tournament, which attracted the champion club fours teams from all the Bowls New Zealand districts. They faced a significant challenge in the final from the Elmwood Park club four of Gary Lawson, Nathan Glasson, Liam Eathorne and Ricky Cook. After Elmwood grabbed a shot on the first end, Taieri won three on the second and two on the third to leap to a 5-1 advantage. Taieri banked four shots on the eighth end to take a commanding 12-4 lead, but Elmwood chipped away, and when the Christchurch bowlers claimed four shots on the 13th end, Taieri's lead was slashed to 13-12. The Taieri quartet held their nerve to claim three shots on the 14th end and held on to win 16-13. Taieri had smashed the Martinborough team 19-4 in the semifinals, and thumped Fitzroy 16-3 in the quarterfinals. They had wins in the early rounds by scores of 18-11, 18-8, 21-11 and 17-4. The Dunedin Bowls Stadium will now host the New Zealand champion of champions women's fours this weekend. • Dunedin bowler Keanu Darby has been named in the Blackjacks squad for the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in November. Darby, who made his New Zealand debut in the transtasman series in February and played at the world indoor championships, will compete in both the singles and the pairs. The Forbury Park bowler is joined by fellow youngster Finbar McGuigan at the new event, which will be played on portable indoor rinks and uses the sets-play format, and is seen as a prelude for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Seasoned Blackjacks Shannon McIlroy and Ali Forsyth will be strong contenders for Glasgow but the selectors have decided to give the younger brigade a chance. "We know what Shannon and Ali are capable of — they're world-class," New Zealand coach Mike Kernaghan said. "But we agreed that it was time to be brave and give newer Blackjacks the opportunity to gain experience at this level." Similarly, selectors faced a tough decision in selecting the women's squad for a world cup that has only singles and pairs competition. They went for the established pairing of Katelyn Inch and Selina Goddard, meaning world singles champion Tayla Bruce misses out. "This was a really tough decision," Kernaghan said. "How often do you leave the world singles champion out of your team? "Ideally, we would have preferred the team composition to mirror what we expect for Glasgow — three men, three women, two para men, two para women, and a vision-impaired mixed pair — but World Bowls has determined the format, and we have to select accordingly. "With Glasgow in mind, we needed to take a close look at our pairs combinations, and this selection reflects that priority." World champion para women's player Teri Blackbourn will skip transtasman partner Kurt Smith in the para mixed pairs.

ANZ Netball Premiership secures broadcast deal - all games free-to-air

Photo: Andrew Cornaga/ After months of negotiations, New Zealand Netball has secured a broadcast deal for the 2026 ANZ Premiership - and it will be free to air. Sky Sport has been the major broadcast partner of New Zealand Netball since 2008, but the national body is going back to TVNZ - its first home. How much TVNZ are actually paying for the rights, if any, is not being disclosed and it seems inevitable that players will have to take pay cuts next year. TVNZ has been in [ cost-saving mode but Netball NZ will be hoping that by having the games all free-to-air, they will attract bigger sponsorship deals. Last year Netball NZ and Sky TV agreed to a one-year extension to their broadcasting partnership. RNZ reported that it was a significantly reduced deal. In 2024, Netball NZ trialled free-to-air coverage of the ANZ Premiership, showing Saturday games live on TVNZ. This year, Netball NZ produced the Saturday game, which screened exclusively on TVNZ, and Sky got it on delay. TVNZ has now won exclusive rights for next year for the whole domestic competition. Games will be shown across TVNZ 2 and TVNZ+. TVNZ head of sports, events and partnerships Melodie Robinson said netball was one of New Zealand's most popular codes and they were excited to have secured the competition. "Our netballers are at the top of their game, they're powerful wāhine toa, and we're thrilled to be connecting tamariki with the heroes who inspire them, bringing the excitement straight into their homes each weekend." Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie has welcomed the return of netball to free-to-air television, calling it a fantastic outcome for fans. "Following a season where we've seen, strong broadcast numbers, fantastic match attendances and unprecedented global viewership, it's exciting to now have the opportunity for even more New Zealanders to enjoy the game. Netball is played and loved by hundreds of thousands across Aotearoa, and this move will help bring the sport closer to communities nationwide." New rule innovations introduced this year, including the captain's timeout and the game changing two-point shot are set to return for the season to run Saturdays and Sundays starting in April. The competition will follow the two-round format, played between the six domestic teams across the motu before the finals series. There will be 30 round robin matches and two finals over a 12-week period. NRL: NZ Warriors forced into injury changes against Dolphins
The NZ Warriors will face the Dolphins in a pivotal NRL encounter without the services of captain James Fisher-Harris, hooker Wayde Egan and five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita on Friday. Coach Andrew Webster has promoted Demitric Vaimauga into the starting row to replace Fisher-Harris, who is expected to miss two weeks with a calf injury. Egan is under concussion protocols, after leaving the field in the first half against Gold Coast Titans on Saturday, and back-up Sam Healey will make his second appearance for the club, after crossing the Tasman from Cronulla his season.
