Union government trying to hide ancient civilisation of Tamils: DMK youth wing
Expressing strong reservations against the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for seeking revision of the report on the findings of the Keezhadi excavations, the DMK youth wing on Sunday charged the BJP government was trying to hide the ancient civilisation and history of Tamil Nadu
A resolution to the effect was passed at the State level meeting of the DMK youth wing organisers chaired by its leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
The resolution said archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, in his report submitted in January 2023, had conclusively established that the ancient urban civilisation of Tamils dated back 2,200 years. However the ASI delayed the publication of the report. When the issue was raised in the Parliament, it was said the report would be released soon. However, the ASI had now returned the report asking Mr Ramakrishna to resubmit his findings by making necessary corrections. It was condemnable. This showed the BJP government was unwilling to accept that the urban civilisation of Tamils was dating back to 2,200 years and it was trying to hide the history of Tamil Nadu.
The DMK youth wing, through another resolution, condemned the BJP government for 'misusing' the President and Vice President to disrespect the Supreme Court's landmark judgment on rights of State governments. The forces that were hostile to the federal structure and principle, were using shortcuts to question the Supreme Court's judgment, the resolution alleged.
The meeting also passed a resolution expressing tribute to the victims of Pahalgam terror attack and commending the Indian Army for the Operation Sindoor.

Former Puducherry CM questions Speaker over projected cost of proposed Assembly complex
Former Puducherry Chief Minister and Congress leader V. Narayanasamy on Friday (June 6, 2025) questioned Speaker R. Selvam for projecting a huge sum of ₹675 crore for the government's proposal to build a new Assembly complex in the Union Territory (UT). 'The Speaker has projected such a high figure with ulterior motives. For the geographical size and present strength of the Assembly (30 elected and three nominated MLAs), the amount is disproportionately huge. Public money cannot be utilised for lavish expenditure. The projected amount could be used for public good,' he said, addressing a press conference in the UT. The Speaker had claimed that the Chief Secretary was putting obstacles in the way of the ₹675-crore project, he said, adding that Mr. Selvam had been pursuing the project for constructing a new Assembly complex since the day he assumed office. 'A few months after Mr. Selvam assumed office, he had told the media that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will lay the foundation for the complex. At that time, he had projected ₹300 crore for the Assembly complex and now, it has gone up to ₹675 crore. During our tenure, we had proposed the construction of a new Assembly at a cost of ₹200 crore, and many States in the Northeast have constructed new Assemblies for around ₹200 crore,' he said. He also questioned Mr. Selvam for his remarks that Chief Minister N. Rangasamy skipped the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi as he generally 'avoided' taking a flight. The Speaker had also said that on the day of NITI Aayog meeting, the Chief Minister had to 'perform puja' at his temple in Gorimedu. 'Mr. Selvam, as a representative of the CM, gave these two reasons for Mr. Rangasamy's absence from the NITI Aayog meeting. The reasons cited by the Speaker sound flimsy and are laughable. The Chief Minister has insulted the people of Puducherry by skipping such an important meeting, where he could have raised Statehood issue and other important subjects concerning the UT,' he said. Responding to Mr. Rangasamy's decision to skip a question on the future of AINRC-BJP alliance during a recent press conference, the Congress leader said Mr. Rangasamy seems disinterested in continuing the alliance with the BJP. 'If he decides to break the alliance with the BJP, the Chief Minister's AINRC will vanish from the political landscape of Puducherry. He will not have the courage to break the alliance,' he said. The Congress was fully prepared to face the next Assembly elections with confidence, he added.

Influencer Sharmishta Panoli Released From Jail After Court Relief
A day after getting an interim relief from the Calcutta High Court, social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli walked out of jail after she was arrested over a communally charged video linked to Operation Sindoor. The 22-year-old influencer from Kolkata was arrested on May 31 for communal remarks she made against a post that questioned India's military response after the Pahalgam terror attack. Ms Panoli was arrested in Gurugram last week after her Instagram post drew protests. The interim bail granted to the influencer yesterday came after the Kolkata police filed a case against Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of Ms Panoli. The man is facing arrest and is on the run. An Assam Police team reached Kolkata with an arrest warrant for Mr Qadri. The Assam Police filed a case against him earlier this week for posting content on social media that contained hate speech and derogatory remarks, which hurt religious sentiments. Ms Panoli's arrest sparked a political row, with the BJP and its allies targeting the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. She was produced in court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. She even received support from Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament and the leader of the right-wing Party for Freedom, who said the influencer's arrest is a "disgrace for freedom of speech" and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure she is freed.
