My father had a severe stroke so I have taken over his finances to manage his bills... NAB has done the unthinkable and now I'm furious

Daily Mail3 days ago
A woman has slammed one of the Big Four banks, claiming she was blocked from accessing her elderly father's account despite having enduring power of attorney.
Andrea Fox claimed NAB cut her access to her father's bank account and accused the finance giant of holding his funds 'hostage'.
Ms Fox has spent more than four years caring for her father's finances, including bills and rates, after he suffered a severe stroke.
'They locked me out of net banking and they put a hold on my dad's account which means that I cannot access his net banking at all,' she said in a TikTok.
'I cannot access his funds, which means I can't pay his bills for him.'
Ms Fox's access to the account had been flagged by the bank's fraud department
'I spent an hour and a half on the phone with the bank. They basically treated me like a criminal, like I was trying to scam my father's money,' she said.
After the long phone call, Ms Fox was eventually told she would need to attend an NAB branch in-person to resolve the issue.
However, even after verifying Ms Fox's identity and seeing documents detailing her enduring power of attorney (EPOA), which legally appointed her to manage her father's finances, the bank seemed unwilling to help.
'They said they couldn't do anything about the bank block because the fraud department had put a hold on the account and stopped me from accessing that money,' Ms Fox said.
'They said it could be up to 30 days before they reinstate my access to dad's account.
'But guess what? I just got his pharmacy bill for his medication from the nursing home. I just got his rates notice.
'What did they say? "You can go into the bank branch and have that bill paid for you because we won't be reinstating your bank access".
'To say that I'm frustrated is beyond it. I went into that bank, trying to get something really simple sorted out, and walked out with tears in my eyes, a bright red face, feeling like I was a criminal.'
In an emotional update on Friday, Ms Fox revealed NAB's fraud department had blocked her access temporarily so it could re-process the EPOA documents.
'Their reasoning was to make sure I wasn't defrauding my father of his money, even though I was going into the bank account to pay one of his bills,' she said.
'I had to go into the NAB today, stand in the line for all that time, explain the situation again and I had to go through a process to get out cash to then walk down to the post office to pay my dad's rates.
'That's just rubbish.'
Ms Fox ended her rant by calling on NAB's fraud department to tell her 'what the hell is going on'.
'I cannot call up and inquire as to the progress of this. The bank cannot call up and inquire. All I can do is send an email, which they may respond to within 30 days, and that is not okay,' she said.
'It drives me crazy. It really does.
'The banking overreach, the protecting people's money, which is literally holding people's money hostage.
'I'm not okay with it. If my dad could actually speak for himself, he would not be okay with it either.'
Several commenters recommended Ms Fox go to the banking ombudsman if her access wasn't reinstated soon.
'Put a complaint in at the bank, then put a complaint in at the ombudsman,' one wrote.
'They make it hard for us to look after our aging parents,' another said.
'What a nightmare,' another wrote.
Others suggested why the bank may have initially blocked her access.
'Unfortunately this is a legislation issue, banks are required to periodically refresh everyone's ID,' one wrote.
'I think the bank is doing the right thing to protect your father's account,' another said.
'It's every bank following elder abuse legislation,' another wrote.
'I'd rather them be over-cautious than do nothing. At least you will get access back with no money taken. Imagine how many people are defrauded,' another said.

White House's new TikTok account has Trump supporters all saying the same thing

Donald Trump 's supporters are jazzed about the White House 's new TikTok account. Republicans in Congress have warned of national security concerns with the foreign app and pushed for the U.S. to ban TikTok if it does not sell to a non-Chinese owner. And even though Trump issued an executive order during his first term on the need to address the emergency threat posed by TikTok, the president's most loyal followers are pleased with the new account. It emerged on Tuesday night with three videos within a few hours of each other, all amassing hundreds of thousands of views. More than 110,000 users followed it by Wednesday morning with thousands more following by the minute. 'White House getting on TikTok is YUGE!' Gen Z political commentator Brilyn Hollyhand wrote on X. 'Posting behind the scenes videos, speeches, and accomplishments - that's how we keep Gen Z for the GOP!' he added. Another X user called MAGA Voice with 1.2 million followers wrote: 'President Trump just launched an official White House TikTok account with the most bada** 30 second video. This is freaking epic.' The White House said in a statement to the Daily Mail that the account is meant to communicate Trump's successes to Americans directly on as 'many platforms as possible.' TikTok is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, and Republicans in Congress have repeatedly threatened a U.S. ban if it does not sell to a company without ties to the CCP. Those threats have turned out to be empty with the president acknowledging his tariffs on Beijing might make a sale even more difficult. He has extended the must-sell-by date several times, and it doesn't appear a deal will happen before the current September deadline. On January 18 this year, TikTok was removed from U.S. app stores and those with it already downloaded were met with the message: 'Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately that means you can't use TikTok for now.' The app was back up and running in the U.S. just hours later after Trump announced he extended the deadline for ByteDance's sale. 'Thanks for your patience and support,' a message on the app read for users who regained access. 'As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!' TikTok's Singaporean CEO Shou Zi Chew, who attended Trump's inauguration, posted a video praising the then-incoming president. Many Republicans are against TikTok operating in the U.S., and warn that is causes a massive security concern because the CCP has access to users' data. In his August 2020 executive order, Trump even admitted that the app could be used to track federal employees, conduct espionage and facilitate censorship or disinformation. At the time, he called the threat of Chinese-owned companies operating in the U.S. a 'national emergency.' A GOP youth adviser acknowledged that the account is a 'nudge' to Republicans on the fence about banning TikTok The new White House TikTok account posted three videos within a few hours, which have amassed more than a million views so far. The videos include clips of Trump speaking and of the White House property and grounds Some on X pointed to Trump now breaking with Republican lawmakers on the matter. 'In a clear nudge to Republican members of Congress who are still on the fence, the White House has officially joined the platform that helped propel President Trump back to the White House: TIKTOK,' wrote CJ Pearson, co-chair of the GOP's Youth Advisory Council. Chinese human rights advocate Yaqiu Wang posted to X: 'American politics has become such a farce.' 'Congress nearly unanimously passed a bill requiring the sale of TikTok over national security concerns. Yet, not only has the president illegally refused to enforce it, but now the White House itself is busy posting on TikTok,' she expanded. Additionally, Mario Nawfal, who posts pro-Trump content to X, wrote: 'Trump has praised TikTok as key to energizing young voters during his 2024 win over Kamala.' 'Intelligence agencies have long warned about the app's Chinese ties,' he acknowledged. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on the new account: 'The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible.' 'President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before,' she concluded.

Influencer 'caught by stray bullet' dies in front of her child in road rage incident

Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, 27, was hit by a stray bullet while sitting beside her four-year-old son when two drivers clashed at a red light - causing one of them to allegedly open fire and hit her An influencer was tragically was gunned down in front of her toddler and partner after being caught in a road rage shootout. ‌ Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, a social media star who had more than 144,000 followers on Instagram, was hit by a stray bullet while sitting beside her four-year-old son during the chaos in Glendale, Arizona on Friday. Police say the violence erupted in a clash between two drivers at a red light, during which Jesus Preciado Dousten, 33, allegedly opened fire. ‌ He has since been arrested on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, AZFamily reports. According to police, Dousten pulled out a handgun and fired toward another driver. ‌ The round pierced Hermosillo's vehicle through the passenger window, striking her in the head as her partner drove up alongside the truck - completely unaware of the danger. The mum was rushed to hospital but sadly could not be saved. "My question still is, why would you just randomly shoot the other way? He obviously didn't know the other car was there," Glendale Police Sergeant Brian Hoskins told the outlet. "That's the thing, as gun owners, you have to know where you're shooting, what you're pointing at. You know, those are the responsibilities of being a responsible gun owner. You can't just fire rounds randomly throughout. Specifically, a high, highly populated city." Dousten was identified as the pickup's owner and later arrested after police found two handguns in his apartment. Hermosillo, who also shared content on Facebook and TikTok, had built an audience of more than 300,000 with her cooking and lifestyle videos. Her devastated family has launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs, remembering her as "a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a beautiful soul whose light touched everyone who knew her." The tribute added: "She leaves behind her husband and their 4-year-old son, who now face an unimaginable loss. Yarely's greatest joy in life was being a mother, and she poured her heart into caring for her little boy. She was an innocent victim caught in the middle of a road rage incident between others, leaving her family and friends devastated."

Paedophile who groomed 14-year-old claimed he 'felt like teenager trapped in man's body'

A 'predatory and determined' paedophile who groomed a 14-year-old girl and sent child abuse videos has been described by a judge as "every parent's worst nightmare". Shaun Fox, 43, was described by sentencing judge Philip Grey as a 'serious risk to the public', as he was jailed for 14 years. Fox, of Swanspool, Ravensthorpe, Peterborough, adopted a pseudonym and pretended to be a 17-year-old boy when he began speaking to the victim via Instagram on 18 May. He asked to see inappropriate photos of the victim and made sexual requests of her. When the victim's mother discovered what was happening, she posed as her daughter on WhatsApp and he sent her three child abuse videos. He then began deleting messages and asked the victim's mother to do the same. Officers were able to trace Fox thanks to an email address for the Instagram account and CCTV footage of him buying a mobile phone and top-up from Sainsbury's in Peterborough. Fox was arrested at him home on 1 July and, in police interview, said he felt like a 17-year-old trapped in the body of a 43-year-old man. Last week at Cambridge Crown Court, Fox was jailed for 14 years and six months, having pleaded guilty to six counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, distributing an indecent photograph, causing a child to watch/look at an image of sexual activity, engaging in sexual communication with a child and causing a girl to engage in sexual activity. He was put on the sex offenders register for life, handed a sexual harm prevention order for life and also a 10-year restraining order. His Honour Judge Grey said: 'The comment about being a 17-year-old in a 43-year-old's body is self-serving rubbish. "You are a 43-year-old self-serving male, who puts yourself and your own desires first, always. 'Nothing here was out of character, you made a plan, and you executed it, you had dozens of opportunities to change this and your regret, in my opinion, is that you were caught." He said the victim's life was now "unrecognisable from before you got your claws into her" but said all the blame lay with Fox, and not the victim or her family. Det Con Jon Edwards, who investigated, said: 'The custodial sentence reflects the severity of Fox's offences and the judge's comments emphasise how dangerous he is. 'I would like to pay tribute to the victim and her family for all the bravery and courage they have shown throughout what must have been a nightmarish ordeal.'
