BJP holds CM, Dy CM, HM responsible for Bengaluru stampede deaths

The Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest in Mangaluru holding the Congress government responsible for the death of 11 persons in the stampede during RCB victory celebrations Bengaluru on June 4. D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mangaluru City South MLA, said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar and Home Minister G. Parameshwara should resign owning responsibility for the deaths and injuries to many. The police should register a case against them by naming them as accused, he said. The MLA said the Chief Minister himself, through a social media post, had invited people to attend the victory celebrations. After inviting people, the police were made to cane them. Now Mr. Siddaramaiah was blaming the police for the incident and had suspended senior officials, he alleged. 'Mr. Siddaramaiah who had sought the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Pahalgam attack now should resign owning responsibility for the stampede deaths,' the MLA said. Mr. Kamath said that Mr. Siddaramaiah, who had criticised Maha Kumbh Mela attended by crores of people, could not control the gathering of about two lakh people at the victory celebrations. Hasty decision of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister resulted in the death of innocent people, Mr. Kamath alleged. The BJP workers burnt the posters of Mr. Siddaramaiah, Mr. Shivakumar and Mr. Parameshwara at the protest. Meanwhile, in a statement on Friday, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that Siddaramaiah-led State government had made senior police officials scapegoats to cover up its failure, following the nationwide outrage over the stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Mr. Suvarna said that even Deputy Chief Minister himself had stated that the police were not responsible for the incident. Yet, the Chief Minister, bowing to pressure from the party high command and in an attempt to safeguard the government's image, suspended senior police officials, he alleged. He said that the government was deliberately weakening the morale of the police department.

Bengaluru stampede sparks ‘Kumbh vs Chinnaswamy' debate over crowd chaos: 'No resignations, no accountability'

The tragic stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 people and injured dozens has triggered a political and public debate, with comparisons being drawn to past crowd disasters, including the Kumbh Mela stampede. The debate was sparked after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, responding to criticism over the RCB victory celebration tragedy, said, 'Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. I did not criticise. If Congress criticises, then that is a different matter. Did I or the Karnataka government criticise?' (Also Read: 'Stampede was state-orchestrated': Bengaluru MP Tejasvi Surya slams Siddaramaiah government) Union Minister Pralhad Joshi strongly objected to this comparison. 'Kumbh and this incident are totally incomparable. People died, but you (Karnataka CM) continued to celebrate. Why did your Deputy CM go to receive the team? A judicial inquiry should be conducted into the incident. When police denied permission, who forced them to allow the event?' he said, demanding accountability from the state leadership. Over 50 people lost their lives in stampedes across the country this year, at temples, railway stations, the Maha Kumbh, and now at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. On January 29, during the Maha Kumbh, a stampede at the Sangam area claimed the lives of 30 people and left 60 injured. The tragedy occurred as millions of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya. On social media, the tragedy ignited emotional reactions. Industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote on X, formerly Twitter, 'Delhi station stampede. Kumbh stampede. Bangalore IPL stampede. Dozens die. No resignations. No accountability. No lessons. In India, the life of a common man isn't priceless it's worthless. Cheaper than a cup of chai! Business will go on as usual. Nothing will change.' Political content creator Arpit Sharma added, 'If you were defending Yogi during Kumbh stampede, you don't have any moral right to question Chinnaswamy stampede.' Adding context to the comparisons, an advocate on X pointed out stark differences in crowd volumes, 'Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 saw approximately 663 million (66.3 crore) visits. The Chinnaswamy Stadium has a seating capacity of 35,000, but was overwhelmed by an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people. These are entirely different scales and require different levels of preparation.' '50-60 Died In Kumbh, I Didn't Criticise': CM Siddaramaiah After Bengaluru Stampede

Last Updated: A stampede during RCB's IPL victory celebrations near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 dead and 33 injured. CM Siddaramaiah announced compensation and a magisterial probe. Hours after 11 people lost their lives in a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he would not justify the mishap by drawing comparisons with similar tragedies elsewhere, like the Maha Kumbh Mela. The Chief Minister further said he did not criticise when several people lost their lives in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj this year. 'Such incidents happened in so many places. I am not going to defend this by comparing it with them now by saying it happened here and there. In Kumbh Mela, 50-60 people died, I didn't criticise it," the Chief Minister said, addressing the media over the stampede incident. 'If Congress criticises, then that is a different matter. Did I or the Karnataka government criticise?" he asked. Siddaramaiah also expressed grief over the stampede incident and announced free treatment to those injured. 'A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured," the Chief Minister said. Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Siddaramaiah said, '11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident." Siddaramaiah further said that he had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter. 'I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry within 15 days. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but nearly three lakh people came," Siddaramaiah said. A massive crowd had gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. The deceased were identified as Bhoomik (20), Sahana (19), Poornachand (32), Chinmayi (19), Divyanshi (13), Shravan (20), Devi (29), Shivaling (17), Manoj Kumar (33) and Akshata. One person, nearly 20 years old, is yet to be identified. RCB won their maiden IPL title with a six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the final at Ahmedabad on Tuesday, ending an 18-year wait. The team had finally got to lift the trophy after finishing runners-up on three occasions previously. First Published: June 05, 2025, 07:26 IST
