US drops sanctions on Russian ex-world chess chief

Russia Today20 hours ago
Former World Chess Federation (FIDE) president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been removed from the US sanctions list following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday.
The decision came as part of Trump's move to end the US sanctions program on Syria. The measures involved restrictions being lifted on several Russian banks and individuals, including Ilyumzhinov. The businessman, who also formerly served as head of the Russian republic of Kalmykia, had been on the US Treasury blacklist since 2015.
The original sanctions accused Ilyumzhinov of involvement in financial dealings with the Syrian government, claims he has consistently denied. Following the designation, he stepped back from his responsibilities at FIDE, which he had led since 1995.
Ilyumzhinov described his removal from the blacklist as a 'fair' and 'courageous' move by Trump, crediting the US leader with a willingness to reevaluate global diplomacy.
'As the first president of the Russian republic of Kalmykia, I consider this decision a serious signal for a possible improvement in US-Russian relations,' Ilyumzhinov told Interfax, describing Trump as a man ready to correct 'historical injustices.'
In a statement on Telegram, Ilyumzhinov also expressed his desire to personally thank the US president and suggested a symbolic meeting to share his vision of today's international development and play a game of chess with Trump.
'I hope President Trump accepts the invitation,' Ilyumzhinov told Interfax, adding that 'a game of wits can sometimes achieve more than ten diplomatic notes.'

Russia outlines response to Ukrainian ‘terrorist' attacks

The Russian military has carried out a series of strikes on Ukrainian military-related targets in response to 'terrorist' raids by Kiev deep into Russia, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said. In a statement on Friday, the ministry said its forces had launched a massive strike overnight in retaliation for 'the terrorist acts of the Kiev regime,' adding that it involved long-range precision weapons, Kinzhal air-based hypersonic missiles, and drones. The attack targeted industrial enterprises developing and producing drones and other robotic mobile systems, facilities manufacturing various military equipment in Kiev, as well as a military airfield and an oil refinery in an undisclosed location, officials said. 'The goal of the strike has been achieved. All designated facilities have been hit,' the ministry added. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

Lavrov sends Rubio Independence Day greetings

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has sent his best wishes to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the American people for Independence Day, which is celebrated on Friday. In a message released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov expressed support for US unity and the American Dream, while expressing hope for improved ties between the two nations. 'I expect that together we can put the relations between our nations on a creative vector, make them stable and predictable based on mutual respect for national interests determined by history, geography, and 'realities on the ground,'' he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his best wishes to US President Donald Trump in a phone call the previous day. According to presidential aide Yury Ushakov, Putin wished Trump success in advancing major reforms and noted Russia's historical contribution to America's struggle for independence from Britain. Moscow has expressed a more favorable view of the Trump administration compared to the previous administration of Joe Biden – who set the strategic defeat of Russia as a core objective of his foreign policy and pledged military support to Ukraine 'for as long as it takes' to achieve victory in the conflict with Russia. Trump has criticized Biden's approach as costly and harmful to US interests. His administration has resumed high-level talks with Moscow and is working toward mediating an end to the Ukraine conflict, with a stated goal of fostering future economic cooperation. While expressing optimism about Trump's intentions, Russia has criticized some of his recent actions. Last month, Trump ordered a military operation against Iran in support of Israel's effort to dismantle the Iranian nuclear program – which Moscow condemned as unlawful and highly destabilizing for global security.

Woman killed in Ukrainian drone raid on Russia (VIDEOS)

At least one civilian was killed and several others injured as Ukrainian drones targeted multiple regions of Russia overnight, damaging residential buildings and infrastructure, local authorities have said. A woman died in Rostov Region when a drone crashed into an apartment building in the village of Dolotinka, acting Governor Yury Slyusar confirmed early Friday morning. The two-story residential block partially collapsed after the impact, killing a retired woman who had worked as a teacher. Twenty residents were evacuated, and emergency teams were dispatched to the site. The drone raids also affected the Azov and Tarasovsky districts in Rostov Region. In Azov, a blast shattered windows in a residential building, and debris from another drone landed on a local stadium. No casualties were reported in those incidents. At least four drones were reported to have crashed in the Sergiyevo-Posadsky District of Moscow Region, according to Governor Andrey Vorobyov. Two civilians were injured, including a 60-year-old man who suffered a closed head injury and lost three teeth, and a 40-year-old man who sustained an open neck wound and a chest contusion. The drone strike also damaged a local substation, causing temporary power outages in several neighborhoods, according to the head of the Sergiyevo-Posadsky District, Oksana Yerokhanova. Emergency services and energy workers remain on-site to restore electricity and assess the damage. Officials said Russian air defenses successfully engaged most incoming targets but acknowledged that some drones penetrated the defenses, causing 'tragic consequences.' The Russian Defense Ministry said a total of 48 drones were intercepted over five regions overnight, including 26 in Rostov, 12 in Kursk, six in Belgorod, three in Oryol, and one in Lipetsk Region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have claimed that the Russian military launched a wave of missile and drone strikes targeting Kiev. Multiple blurred-out videos shared on Ukrainian social media appeared to show the aftermath, with numerous fires lighting up the city skyline. The Russian Defense Ministry has yet to issue an official statement regarding the reported strike. However, it regularly conducts missile and drone operations against Ukrainian military infrastructure, maintaining that it does not target civilians and accusing Kiev of placing air defense systems in densely populated areas.
