Netflix film everyone should watch after Pope Francis' death

Daily Record21-04-2025

The Pope has died at the age of 88, leaving millions of Catholics around the world in mourning. But one film that has been made about the Head of the Catholic Church is a must-watch for fans
Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, leaving millions of Catholics worldwide in a state of grief.
In a touching announcement, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis had died at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

His Eminence, Cardinal Farrell said: ""Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.
"His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.
"He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.", reports the Mirror.
Just a day prior to his passing on Easter Monday, Pope Francis had made an appearance in St Peter's Square to extend Easter greetings to the thousands of devotees gathered below.
Pope Francis was the first Pontiff hailing from the Americas or the southern hemisphere and was also the first Jesuit to be elected to the top position in the Catholic church.

Already in his 70s when he assumed office, Pope Francis' predecessor was Pope Benedict, who chose to retire. This led to the unique situation of having two living Popes residing in the Vatican for the first time.
The poignant film, Two Popes, featuring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, creatively explores the ties between two leading figures and is currently available on Netflix.
Drawing from their true-life narrative, Two Popes delves into the history of both characters and depicts how they offered one another solace, especially after Pope Benedict's stepping down and Pope Francis' subsequent election.

The movie struck a chord unexpectedly, with audiences applauding Pryce and Hopkins for their compelling renditions of the Catholic leaders.
On popular critique platform Rotten Tomatoes, Two Popes boasts an impressive 88 percent thumbs-up score.

A reviewer said: "A remarkable accomplishment. It's an important film for LGBT Catholics and for all LGBT film fans and should be experienced on the big screen."
Praise also came from another who said: "Pryce is so good in The Two Popes, capturing a beloved world figure with undeniable grace and surprising heft. It's smart, well-acted, and features some of the snappiest dialogue you'll hear this year."
Moreover, another wrote: "Intelligent filmmaking, telling a very difficult, highly sensitive tale in a low-key, old-fashioned way, and still coming out as entirely relevant to the times."

Enthusiasm for the drama didn't wane with the public either. One fan commented: "Two stellar performances by standouts at their craft. Amid all the pomp, all the sterile and the staunch, we gets sly little jokes and asides and more in this charming changing of the Catholic seat of most honor."
A second reviewer said: "Totally brilliant acting by the two Popes (Hopkins and Pryce). An interesting story even if one has little sympathy with the Catholic Church. Some may find it boring (no action), but the dialogue is utterly absorbing. Pope Francis' historical background under the Argentinian junta is also a major feature, adding the dimension of religion/politics."
A third critic shared their praise, stating: "A riveting and impactful drama on the teachings and issues of the Roman Catholic Church."
The Two Popes is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Danny Jones' wife makes first post including him since Maura Higgins kiss

Georgia has shared Danny on her social media for the first time since the scandal. Danny Jones' wife Georgia shared a tribute to her husband for the first time since he was pictured kissing Love Island star Maura Higgin. The 38-year-old, who shares seven-year-old son Cooper with McFly star Danny, 39, shared a sweet post to him on Instagram to mark Father's Day. After she posted a snap of her own dad, she then went on to post a cute photo of Cooper cuddling into his dad. She sweetly captioned the post: "For the Dads. Happy Father's Day." ‌ Georgia's post is the first that he's appeared on her social media page since he was papped kissing his I'm A Celebrity co-star Maura at a Brits after party back in March. Danny, who has been married to Georgia for over a decade, issued a grovelling public apology after the drunken smooch. ‌ In a statement on his Instagram Story, he said: "Hello everyone, sorry it's taken me a while to post this but I've taken some time out to be with those closest to me. I want to deeply apologise to my wife and family for putting them in this situation. I love them so much and we'll continue to deal with this privately." He added to fans: "I love you guys, thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. See you all soon, Danny." Following the BRITs scandal, apparently, Georgia temporarily moved out of their family home. Insiders claimed that the whole situation was "embarrassing" for the mother-of-one, who married Danny back in 2014. Shortly after the kiss, a source claimed that while "they may still be married, they are not together and she is still working out what she wants to do." However, it's now believed Georgia is back in the family home in West London and has returned to host her podcast, Mum's The Word! with friend Kelsey Parker. ‌ A source told the Mirror in April: "Georgia is returning to face the music after weeks away. She took some time for herself after the incident blew up but now she's ready to talk." "This wasn't some grand gesture where she suddenly packed her bags and left. It was just a girlie few nights at a close pal's flat. Yes, she wanted some space, but she is home now, and while things are still fragile, they are trying to work things through," a separate source confirmed. Danny is said to be eager to work through things and get his marriage with Georgia back on track. "He has made it clear he will do anything to make it work. He loves Georgia and wants their marriage to get back on track," a source told The Sun. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!

The Scotland and Rangers icon headed off from Belfast this morning to take on the 555-mile, six-day ride around Ireland as part of the Doddie'5 Lions Challenge. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 5 Ally McCoist is taking part in the charity cycle around Ireland 5 But he had to deal with a few mechanical issues before he set off 5 And the group are doing it to help raise funds in memory of Doddie Weir Joining McCoist in the fundraising effort are Scotland rugby great Kenny Logan, his wife and broadcaster, Gabby, former rugby stars Mel Deane and Will Greene and actor Jamie Bamber. The group will cover up to 100 miles a day in memory of Scotland legend Doddie Weir, who sadly passed away in 2022, and to raise money for research into motor neurone disease. So far, the challenge has raised more than £300,000 for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, with hopes of hitting the £500,000 mark before the final leg. The ride will finish in Dublin on Friday where the team will deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium ahead of the British and Irish Lions' clash with Argentina. Read More Sport NOTE TO SELF Fergie spots emotional 26-year-old letter he sent on tour of Rangers' museum Logan says McCoist – who also took part in the 2023 charity cycle from Edinburgh to Paris - will fill the role again of trying to keep everyone's spirits up during the gruelling ordeal. But he revealed his close pal nearly never made it all – because he kept fiddling with his bike's settings! Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about but his bike broke down the other day. 'I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him! 'We've lost a few to injury and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. 'I'm not going to lie – I've had my own aches and pains. Rangers legend Ally McCoist labelled 'Scotland's James Bond' as he takes an Easter dip in freezing cold loch 'No major injuries thankfully, but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age! 'I'm most nervous about the hills. 'I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. 'I've always had them before a big challenge, and it means I care.' This year's event is both a tribute to Weir and a rallying cry to continue his legacy. 5 Former Scotland star Kenny Logan and his wife Gabby are part of the crew 5 And the group hope to raise almost £500,000 for two charities Logan added: 'The support's been incredible. 'We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. 'The Foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. 'That's why we're doing this.' Seven Scots are in the Lions squad for the tour after Zander Fagerson withdrew due to injury. Logan admits he's disappointed winger Darcy Graham never got the nod – but thinks there might be time yet for the Edinburgh flier to make the plane to Australia. He added: 'I still think Darcy will go – there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and then, and there will be injuries. 'We've seen that with Zander missing out already. 'Overall it's great to see so many Scots in the squad – they'll be out to make their mark in Australia and put down a marker for the Test team.' All funds raised will support the Foundation's mission to find effective treatments – and ultimately a cure – for motor neurone disease. More info Back in the early 2000s, Katie Price was romantically involved before her stint on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! where she met her future husband, Peter Andre. During the show, she openly flirted with the 'Mysterious Girl' singer, even telling him that her then-partner Scott Sullivan – a millionaire's son whom she had been dating for two years and who reportedly proposed before she entered the jungle – was "a nice guy, but I'm not going to marry him... I know he's not the one." Scott Sullivan, feeling threatened by Katie's on-screen chemistry with Pete, is said to have considered flying to Australia to confront the singer and 'punch his lights out. After the series, the pair quickly announced they were 'in love', reports the Mirror. Katie and Peter tied the knot in a grand £2 million wedding in Hampshire in 2005 and welcomed two children, Junior and Princess, now aged 20 and 17. However, their marriage unravelled, leading to a divorce in 2009. But what became of Scott Sullivan, once known for dating glamour models? We delve into his current life, which remains as glamorous as ever since we last heard from him. Scott is now believed to be in his late 30s and has established himself as a successful entrepreneur, owning private jet charter firm Shy Aviation and luxury travel company Shy Lifestyle, an exclusive invitation-only service catering to high-profile clients such as Ed Westwick. After being linked to glamour models Jodie Marsh and Bianca Gascoigne, Scott dated former Made In Chelsea star Caggie Dunlop before eventually finding love with Funda Onal, also a former love interest of Spencer Matthews from MIC. Funda and Scott tied the knot in 2017, with Funda, now 40, announcing her pregnancy a year later. The couple shared a heartfelt photo of Scott kissing her baby bump, captioned "A new family is born." Funda, a talented model, actor, and dancer, has worked with notable brands including Nike and Adidas and has appeared in music videos by Calvin Harris and Tinie Tempah. She is now likely to be a mother of two daughters, aged around seven and three, based on her social media updates from 2022. However, the current status of Scott and Funda's relationship remains unclear, with no recent pictures of Scott on her Instagram and vice versa. Meanwhile, Scott, who has posted only one photo of a young girl on his social media in 2020, seems to have moved on and is preparing to welcome another child with his new partner. Tagging a lady known as Katherine Scott, who has been making appearances on his social media of late, he posted a monochrome photo gazing at her blossoming bump. On the snap from 31 May, he wrote: "A new Soul among us." Katherine seems to be his significant other, as one follower responded with warm wishes saying: "Such a stunning couple, inside and out." (Image: Instagram) (Image: Instagram) (Image: PA) (Image: RICHARD YOUNG/REX/Shutterstock) Another chimed in, "Beyond happy for you both," while a third shared their feelings: "This gave me chills, so much love in one photo," and a fourth enthused: "A powerful soul it is. Congratulations brother x." Katherine's beau has also flaunted his penchant for autos and adrenaline-fueled hobbies like skiing, rock climbing and wakeboarding on his profile. He's quite the enthusiast of Jiu Jitsu too, often sharing photos from his grappling practice with mates.
