Chromebook Plus laptops like Lenovo's sleek, new 14-incher are getting free Gemini AI features

Google announced a handful of new Gemini AI features for Chromebook Plus laptops, including a sleek, new 14-inch flagship device from Lenovo that I got to handle recently.
The new AI functions include select to search, which allows you to long press the launcher icon or take a screenshot and do a Google search based on on-screen images or text. (It's like circle to search on phones, but for Chromebooks.) Text captured this way can be imported into a calendar or Google Workspace apps like a spreadsheet or document. On-screen text that's a bit technical or jargon-y can also be simplified. And now, the Quick Insert key — the 'Gemini button' that replaces the Caps Lock key on Chromebooks — gets a shortcut to AI image generation.
There are two more new Gemini features: a smart grouping tool that automatically organizes your current tabs and documents based on what you're working on, and some image editing built into the Gallery app for automated tasks like background removal and making stickers. These new functions use on-device AI and are exclusive to Lenovo's new Chromebook Plus 14 laptop, which launches today alongside Google's new tools.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14-inch, 10th-gen) starts at $649 and uses a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra chip capable of 50 TOPS. It's an eight-core Arm-based processor with Wi-Fi 7 and support for up to two external 4K monitors. Lenovo's new flagship Chromebook also has a 14-inch OLED display capable of 1920 x 1200 resolution and 400 nits of brightness, with the option for a touchscreen version starting at $749. Its other key specs include up to 256GB of storage, up to 16GB of RAM, a fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.4 support, and a four-speaker Dolby Atmos audio setup. For ports, it has just two 5Gbps USB-C, one 5Gbps USB-A, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.
I got to briefly hold and see the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 at a recent Google preview event, and it was certainly a svelte and sleek machine. It weighs just 2.58 pounds, making it easy to lift up from a corner with just one hand. And, as usual for OLEDs, its screen had a deep and colorful contrast that was pleasant to look at. In addition to this being the first Arm-based model for Google's Chromebook Plus range of laptops, the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14's 60Wh cell is claimed to have the best battery life among its peers.

As a result, Google's leadership is putting more support into growing YouTube's ad and subscription revenue, which reached over $50 billion in the 12 months ending September 2024. In addition, YouTube and Google Cloud together even passed a $110 billion annual run rate during the same period, which beat the company's goal for 2024. With Google pulling back, competitors like Roku (ROKU), Amazon's Fire TV (AMZN), and The Trade Desk (TTD) are looking to grow their share of the connected TV market. At the same time, YouTube is making leadership changes, which include hiring Disney (DIS) executive Justin Connolly while also considering successors to top roles like Chief Business Officer. As YouTube's subscription services continue to grow, Google may shift even more resources away from smart TVs and into streaming. Is Google Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on GOOGL stock based on 29 Buys and nine Holds assigned in the past three months. A laser navigating tool doomed a Japanese company's lunar lander earlier this month, causing it to crash into the moon. Officials for ispace announced the news from Tokyo on Tuesday. The crash landing was the second for ispace in two years. This time, the company's lander named Resilience was aiming for the moon's far north in Mare Frigoris, or Sea of Cold. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter relayed pictures of the crash site last week where Resilience and its mini rover ended up as wreckage. Company officials blamed the accident on the lander's laser range finder, saying it did not properly measure the spacecraft's distance to the lunar surface. Resilience was descending at a rapid rate of 138 feet (42 meters) per second when contact was lost, and crashed within seconds, they said. Bad software caused ispace's first lunar lander to slam into the moon in 2023. Like the latest try, the problem occurred during the final phase of descent. Of seven moon landing attempts by private outfits in recent years, only one can claim total success: Firefly Aerospace's touchdown of its Blue Ghost lander in March. Blue Ghost launched with Resilience in January, sharing a SpaceX rocket ride from Florida. Aside from Texas-based Firefly, only five countries have pulled off a successful lunar landing: the Soviet Union, the U.S., China, India and Japan. And only the U.S. has put astronauts on the moon, back during NASA's Apollo program more than a half-century ago. Despite back-to-back losses, ispace is pressing ahead with its third moon landing attempt in 2027, with NASA cooperation, as well as a fourth planned mission. KAWASAKI, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has started sample shipments of ' TB9M001FTG,' the second product in its Smart Motor Control Driver 'SmartMCD™ [1] ' series. The microcontroller in the SmartMCD™ incorporates a relay driver [2] function and a LIN [3] transceiver function. The new product can drive relays and control two brushed DC motors and is suitable for controlling brushed DC motors in automotive applications. In recent years, as the electrification of automotive equipment has progressed, secondary devices [4] are increasingly required to offer higher performance, enhanced functionality, more compact designs, and fewer components. Toshiba has responded to these requirements, by developing the new product. The new SmartMCD™ has four built-in low-side drivers that can be used for relay drivers and other applications, enabling forward and reverse control [5] of two brushed DC motors. It also features a built-in microcontroller (Arm ® Cortex ® -M0 core), high-capacity flash memory, two high-side drivers for power-supply applications, a LIN transceiver, and a power supply system that can operate at the automotive battery level. All of these functions are integrated into a compact VQFN48 package (7×7 mm typ.). In addition to controlling brushed DC motors in automotive applications, such as power sunroofs, electric wipers, power windows, and power seats, the driver is also capable of controlling various sensors and actuators. Furthermore, through LIN control from the main ECU, it can be utilized as a secondary device for a wide range of applications.
