Google introduces AI-powered Chromebook Plus 14: Features, specifications, and more

Google introduced the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14, a new addition to the Chromebook line-up that features upgraded hardware and AI-powered software tools aimed at improving productivity and user experience. The laptop is now available for purchase in two configurations: a 12GB RAM model priced at $649, and a higher-end 16GB RAM variant with a fingerprint scanner for $749. The Chromebook Plus 14 is equipped with MediaTek's latest Kompanio Ultra processor, which includes what Google claims is the most powerful ARM-based Neural Processing Unit (NPU) ever integrated into a Chromebook. Capable of up to 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS), the chip is built to handle a wide range of AI-driven tasks. The device also offers up to 17 hours of battery life, marking the longest battery performance in the Chromebook Plus range so far. In terms of hardware, the new Chromebook includes a number of firsts. It is the first Chromebook Plus to feature Dolby Atmos support for audio and comes with an OLED display. A fingerprint scanner is included in the higher-spec model. These additions place the device at the higher end of the Chromebook market, positioning it as a tool for users managing multiple tasks and media-related work. New on-device AI features have also been integrated. Smart Grouping, for instance, automatically organises browser tabs and documents into groups based on the user's ongoing tasks. The Gallery app now includes AI image editing, which allows users to remove backgrounds or create stickers directly from their image library with a single click. In parallel with the hardware launch, Google is rolling out several AI features across the wider Chromebook Plus portfolio. These tools are embedded directly into ChromeOS and aim to simplify everyday digital tasks. One such feature is "Select to Search with Lens", which allows users to highlight any part of their screen and get contextual information, such as similar shopping options or explanations, without navigating away from the current page. Another addition, "Text Capture", enables users to extract editable text from images, such as receipts or handwritten notes. This information can then be used to automatically populate calendar entries or generate shopping lists in Google Docs. Meanwhile, the new "Quick Insert Key" offers the ability to generate images or insert photos and emojis directly into documents or presentations, streamlining creative workflows. "Help Me Read" has also received an upgrade. Beyond summarising lengthy passages, it can now simplify dense or technical text, making it easier to understand. These tools are available to all Chromebook Plus users, regardless of model. Customers purchasing a Chromebook Plus will also receive a 12-month subscription to the Google AI Pro plan. The package includes 2TB of cloud storage and access to Google's Gemini AI in Gmail, Docs, and more. Users will also be able to launch NotebookLM, Google's AI research and writing assistant, directly from the desktop shelf. The Chromebook Plus 14 also includes custom wallpapers developed in partnership with NASA. These images depict Jupiter's auroras during different phases such as day, night, sunrise and sunset, and are exclusive to this particular device. Finally, app support has been expanded. Netflix's Squid Game: Unleashed is being optimised for Chromebooks with keyboard and mouse controls, along with exclusive in-game content. Luminar, a popular AI-powered photo editing app, is now supported on Chromebooks and is being offered free for three months with the purchase of any Chromebook Plus model. The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is currently available through Best Buy

New Gemini smarts aren't the only reason I'm excited for Google's latest Chromebook Plus laptops

Google has just kicked its Chromebook Plus program into high gear, courtesy of all-new MediaTek silicon that promises to bring some of Gemini's AI smarts out of the cloud and onto your lap. First in line is the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14, which launches today from $599/£599 – and after seeing one in the metal at a pre-launch preview, I'm going to need to rethink what it means to be a budget laptop. Each new Chromebook Plus notebook I've seen has somehow managed to feel more and more premium; Lenovo's effort goes even better, with a largely metal build that's barely 16mm at its thickest point. The silver finish really helps it play the part of a pricier device, and I like the subtle Chromebook badging on the lid. There's still room at the sides for two USB-C ports – one on the left next to a single Type-A port, and one on the right with the 3.5mm headphone port. It's great to see a fingerprint reader underneath the keyboard, too; using an Android phone with Smart Lock is a slick way to skip the ChromeOS lock screen, but this is even quicker. The 5MP webcam promises clear video calls, with Google's usual on-device background blur and appearance effects on offer if you need 'em. Weighing a paltry 1.15kg, this laptop looks ideal for on-the-go working, and it's also completely fanless. That means silent running, whether you're replying to work emails or getting your game on via the Play Store. A 1920×1200 OLED screen further sets this machine apart from lesser Chromebooks. Perfect blacks, impeccable contrast and vibrant colours were all on display during my demo, along with excellent viewing angles. 400 nits brightness is promised, along with 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage for creative types. It'll be available as a touchscreen, too. Dolby Atmos sound is then Chromebook first, with two woofers and two tweeters delivering down- and up-firing audio to match the luscious visuals. It should eat up anything you can throw at it, thanks to the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra chipset. Eight ARM cores apparently deliver 18% better CPU muscle and 40% better GPU performance than the Intel Core Ultra 5 125U found in a handful of current Chromebooks. 50% less power consumption, too – so much that Lenovo reckons you'll see up to 17 hours of battery life from a single charge. It's paired with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. AI processing sees the biggest gains, with a dedicated NPU delivering as much as 50 TOPs of processing grunt. On-device Gemini Nano processing should be 32% faster than previous-gen Chromebook Plus laptops, but also 44% more efficient. That's handy, as Google has moved even more of Gemini's AI processing onto the Chromebook itself for 2025. The image gallery can now intelligently cut out subjects from their backgrounds, or expand them if you've cropped in too tightly. Cloud-based image generation can now be found in the Quick Insert menu (accessed with the Caps Lock key), and the 12 Months of Google AI Pro Plan you get free with purchase includes Google's eerily clever Veo 3 video generation tool. Smart Grouping is exclusive to the Chromebook Plus 14, taking related apps and windows to a new virtual desktop to save you from a nightmare of alt+tab swapping. Select to Search with Lens is the laptop equivalent of your phone's Circle to Search. Tap and hold – or press a shortcut key combo – and you can drag a box around any onscreen text. A window then pops up from the corner of the screen with relevant info, without taking you away from your current app, and contextual tools appear based on what you've selected. Highlight a party invitation image and it'll offer to add the event to your calendar; highlight a photo of spreadsheet and it'll let you import the lot into Google Sheets, formatting and all. The non-exclusive features will make their way to existing Chromebook Plus laptops, but you'll need to pick up the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 to get AI image editing in the gallery app and smart grouping. It's on sale right now, with prices starting from $599/£599.

Chromebook Plus laptops like Lenovo's sleek, new 14-incher are getting free Gemini AI features

Google announced a handful of new Gemini AI features for Chromebook Plus laptops, including a sleek, new 14-inch flagship device from Lenovo that I got to handle recently. The new AI functions include select to search, which allows you to long press the launcher icon or take a screenshot and do a Google search based on on-screen images or text. (It's like circle to search on phones, but for Chromebooks.) Text captured this way can be imported into a calendar or Google Workspace apps like a spreadsheet or document. On-screen text that's a bit technical or jargon-y can also be simplified. And now, the Quick Insert key — the 'Gemini button' that replaces the Caps Lock key on Chromebooks — gets a shortcut to AI image generation. There are two more new Gemini features: a smart grouping tool that automatically organizes your current tabs and documents based on what you're working on, and some image editing built into the Gallery app for automated tasks like background removal and making stickers. These new functions use on-device AI and are exclusive to Lenovo's new Chromebook Plus 14 laptop, which launches today alongside Google's new tools. The Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14-inch, 10th-gen) starts at $649 and uses a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra chip capable of 50 TOPS. It's an eight-core Arm-based processor with Wi-Fi 7 and support for up to two external 4K monitors. Lenovo's new flagship Chromebook also has a 14-inch OLED display capable of 1920 x 1200 resolution and 400 nits of brightness, with the option for a touchscreen version starting at $749. Its other key specs include up to 256GB of storage, up to 16GB of RAM, a fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.4 support, and a four-speaker Dolby Atmos audio setup. For ports, it has just two 5Gbps USB-C, one 5Gbps USB-A, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. I got to briefly hold and see the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 at a recent Google preview event, and it was certainly a svelte and sleek machine. It weighs just 2.58 pounds, making it easy to lift up from a corner with just one hand. And, as usual for OLEDs, its screen had a deep and colorful contrast that was pleasant to look at. In addition to this being the first Arm-based model for Google's Chromebook Plus range of laptops, the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14's 60Wh cell is claimed to have the best battery life among its peers. Buying the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 or any Chromebook Plus device in 2025 gets you free access to Google's AI Pro Plan for one year, which includes Gemini 2.5 Pro, the Veo 3 AI video generator, and 2TB of cloud storage.
