Award-winning chef confronts influencer then claims his career is destroyed

Metroa day ago
The chef and co-founder of a restaurant in San Francisco has said that a viral scandal with an influencer has ruined his career and family.
Last month, Luke Sung of Kis Cafe stepped down from the business, after a micro influencer named Karla Marcotte said she was left 'shaking' and 'frazzled' by Sung's alleged 'disrespect'.
In a video posted by the influencer under her handle @itskarlabb, she claimed that Sung dismissed her because her – at the time – 15,000 following was too small for the collaboration. Since the incident it has rocketed to 477,000.
Speaking to The San Francisco Standard, Sung said the incident being made public has since ruined his career and hurt his family – adding that this mishap came about because his business partner did not make him aware of the influencer's visit.
He said: 'That night, I was running a special with this beautiful coho salmon. I didn't want to be misrepresented by someone who doesn't understand the difference between Atlantic salmon and king salmon.
'So I went over to her and said, 'Hi. Somewhere along the line, I think there may have been a mistake. I'm not sure if we have the same audience'.
'I think I asked her, 'Have you looked up Kis Cafe? Do you know my background? Do you know what we're trying to do?'
'I think there was a lot of 'do you know,' and she was intimidated — which I can understand.' @itskarlabb
its a long video and not something i would normally upload but i feel like i had to talk about this experience. i basically ran out of there but i wish i would've stood up for myself. if you are a micro influencer i know it's easy to feel discouraged at times but don't let anyone make you feel small or unimportant!! ♬ original sound – itskarlabb
After the influencer's TikTok went viral, Kis Cafe said that Sung's 'behavior was unacceptable' and he was 'no longer part of the team'.
But who is really at fault here? The TikTokker for such a public slamming or the chef who decided to confront someone just doing their job?
As a food writer who reviews restaurants around London for Metro's food and drink newsletter The Slice, I've had my fair share of incidents that were simply a result of miscommunication.
With invitations to restaurants typically managed by a separate PR team it's easy for them to happen – I've had waiters not been made aware that the PR has arranged a complimentary meal, and incidents where the wrong booking time had been made.
To me, this is all part and parcel of running a hospitality business, and I like to give staff grace. We all make mistakes after all. But how a restaurant deals with those hiccups is how they can set themselves apart.
To question the influencer on her knowledge of the restaurant, and according to the account given in her TikTok, ask for her handle and play her videos out loud right in front of her is condescending, inappropriate and unprofessional.
Whether a restaurant offers complimentary meals in exchange for written reviews or content, and who they choose to work with is completely their discretion.
And it's clear that somewhere along the lines, there was a failure in communication with Sung and his business partner which should have been addressed between them privately.
The pair should have had a prior conversation to make sure they were aligned in their influencer outreach strategy. But to embarrass a guest, whether they are a paying customer or not, is wrong.
There is also a lot to be said about taking to social media to publicly 'out' a restaurant – and some might say that the influencer was too quick to share her experience on the platform.
However, Karla did not name Sung or Kis Cafe in her video, viewers simply worked out where the restaurant was as it rose in views and received support from the likes of Jameela Jamil.
And, like it or not, people are entitled to speak about their own experiences on public platforms – whether it's deemed classy or not. More Trending
A few days later the chef apologised on Instagram for his behaviour, however Kis Cafe has since closed down which ultimately results in a whole team losing their jobs.
It's a desperately sad end to the situation, as innocent staff have borne the brunt of the incident, and I hope there are two lessons learned from this unnecessary scenario.
Firstly, Luke Sung can take from this experience and deal with incidents like these in a better way in his next venture, and secondly, perhaps influencers should pause for a second and think about just who will be impacted by their posts.

Conjoined sisters Abby and Brittany Hensel spotted carrying newborn baby

Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel have been pictured carrying a newborn baby one year after their secret wedding was revealed. Images show the pair, 34, holding the baby in a car seat near a car in Arden Hills, Minnesota, on Thursday. They were last in the public spotlight a year ago after it was revealed Abby had married dad-of-one Joshua Bowling three years before in 2021. Joshua shared a wedding day picture on his Facebook, showing the couple with Brittany. The family already sparked pregnancy rumours in December after they shared an uncaptioned video on Tiktok featuring a series of fake 'breaking' news headlines referencing them. One of the headlines read 'Shocking Tragedy', while another said: 'What if one dies?' The final headline, showcased at the end of the video, read: 'Married & baby on the way,' leading fans to speculate if the twins used the clip to soft-launch a pregnancy. Abby and Brittany are yet to confirm any pregnancy. The two shot to fame on reality TV and first appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 when they were just six-years-old. They now work as teachers in Minnesota and are the rarest conjoined twins because they come from a single fertilised egg that failed to fully separate in the womb. The pair have two brains, two spinal cords and two hearts, but share organs from below the waist. More Trending Abby controls the right arm and leg and Brittany controls the left. In a previous documentary about their life, the pair said: 'People have been curious about us since we were born, for obvious reasons. 'But our parents never let us use that as an excuse. We were raised to believe we could do anything we wanted to do. 'The most amazing thing about us is we are like everyone else.' Reality TV star conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel spotted with newborn baby

Conjoined twins and reality TV stars Abby and Brittany Hensel have been spotted carrying a newborn baby, and putting the sweet infant inside a vehicle in a car park Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel have been spotted out and about with a sweet newborn baby, leading to speculation that their family might have grown. ‌ In pictures shared by TMZ, the 35-year-old twin sisters, whose TLC series Abby & Brittany ended more than a decade ago, were seen carrying the adorable infant in a car seat before carefully making sure the baby was secured inside the back seat of their vehicle. ‌ The sisters then spent some time at the boot of the black Tesla before heading off on their journey and leaving the car park in Arden Hills, Minnesota. But they aren't the only TV stars who have gone through a major change, with the sighting coming after one huge TV star looks completely unrecognisable as she reveals latest facelift. ‌ Abby, who married husband Josh Bowling back in 2021, is already a step-mother to his daughter Isabella, from a previous romance - but for a long time, the sisters have always expressed a desire to have children. "We're going to be moms," Brittany said in Joined for Life: Abby & Brittany Turn 16 in 2006. "We haven't thought about how being moms is going to work yet." Abby and Brittany are dicephalic parapagus twins, which means they share one torso to which their two heads are joined, and they also share one pair of legs. Abby, who is on the right side of the body, controls the right arm and leg, and Brittany has control over the left limbs. Conjoined twins are very rare, but the Hensen sisters are even more unusual because they are really pretty symmetrical compared to other conjoined twins. They have always been really candid about their unique shared lives, and recently posted a video on their TikTok page, which saw a doctor explain how their joined anatomy actually works. ‌ "Abby and Brittany Hensel's anatomy is a remarkable blend of shared and individual organs and tissues," the video they shared by molecular biologist Hashem Al-Ghaili explained, "The twins each have their own distinct upper body systems. Abby and Brittany have two heads, two brains, two spinal cords, and two hearts, which are part of a shared circulatory system." Despite having the same blood circulation system, their brains and spinal cords are their own, which means they have to work in tight-knit coordination to carry things, get places, or drive a car. ‌ The pair previously opened up on their reality TV show for TLC just how painstaking the coordination has to be on a minute-by-minute basis. "We have two licenses," Abby said back in 2012, "When we got our driver's licenses, we each had to take the test. We both passed." Brittany explained that they both have to steer, but her sister was the one in charge of the brake and acceleration pedals. ‌ Despite having their own hearts, brains, spines, and four lungs, the sisters share one set of reproductive organs. They haven't confirmed whether the baby they were spotted with is their own, and the teacher sisters now stay mostly out of the spotlight. When they were children, their parents were offered the possibility of separation surgery, but they turned it down, because it was unlikely that both their daughters would have survived.
