Alan Turing Institute scraps diversity drive under pressure from ministers
The research initiative from The Alan Turing Institute, which last year was handed £100m in taxpayer funding, had aimed to get more women into science and promote 'equity in the data science and AI fields'.
However, the programme has now been axed following a review by the organisation's board amid calls for it to focus increasingly on defence.
The decision means the institute will no longer have a mandate to investigate 'diversity and inclusion in online and physical workplace cultures', while it will also end inquiries into how 'social bias' risks being built into machine learning systems.
It comes just days after Peter Kyle, the Technology Secretary, urged the institute to 'reform'.
In a letter to Doug Gurr, the former Amazon executive who is now chairman of the organisation's board of trustees, Mr Kyle said it must 'evolve and adapt' to 'prioritise its defence, national security and sovereign capabilities'.
Drift from core mission
Originally launched by David Cameron in 2015, the institute has come under growing scrutiny after it was awarded the £100m government funding.
This week, a report from British Progress argued the organisation had 'lost its way' and needed 'major reform'.
The think tank said the institute had a 'fragmented and thinly spread research portfolio' and that it had been 'susceptible to mission creep'.
The report added: 'The most significant example of this has been its drift away from its core technical mission toward work rooted in social and political critique.'
British Progress warned that, if it failed to reform, there would be grounds to 'decommission the institute entirely'.
While the institute has made moves towards reforming its research, its staff have also criticised its allegedly chaotic management and a lack of diversity in senior roles.
Last year, more than 180 staff signed a letter questioning its decision to hire four top male academics, as they criticised a 'trend of limited diversity within the institute's senior scientific leadership'.
In December, The Telegraph reported that external consultants had raised concerns from staff about 'tokenism' and 'nepotism' at the institute, warning of 'pervasive issues of low morale'.
That month, staff also sent a no-confidence letter to its leadership team and board, warning it had been left 'rudderless'.
The scrapping of the gender representation scheme comes amid a wider retreat across the technology sector, with many businesses rowing back on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies after Donald Trump's return to the White House.
The institute was named after the Second World War computer scientist Alan Turing, who was persecuted for his homosexuality.
The mathematician, who died in 1954, led Britain's codebreakers at Bletchley Park and helped to design a machine to crack Nazi Germany's Enigma messages.
Yet in recent years, the institute has been dogged by concerns that it missed out on the emergence of a new wave of technology.
In 2023, a report from the Tony Blair Institute argued it had 'not kept the UK at the cutting edge of international AI developments '.
A spokesman for the institute said it was in the process of reviewing 100 projects, two of which had been axed.
They added: 'We're shaping a new phase for the institute focused on delivering real-world impact against society's biggest challenges and will respond to the national need to double down on our work in defence, national security and sovereign capabilities.'

This REIT's assets are 337 manufactured home communities and165 residential vehicle communities. These communities have traditionally served consumers looking for lower-cost options than single-family homes or apartments. Skyrocketing housing prices throughout the U.S. have led to sustained growth in both sectors. Despite that, Sun Communities' share price has been trending downward for the last nine months. It's currently trading around $116, but many analysts believe it's primed for a comeback. Benzinga recently compiled the opinions of 10 analysts, and Sun Communities' average 12-month price target is $139.12. The highest estimate is $147, while the lowest is $126. Both are improvements over the current share price. There may be solid upside for investors here. Millrose Properties (NYSE: MRP) was the second-largest dividend winner for shareholders. It announced a 6.2% quarterly dividend increase in June, which translates to $0.69 per share, which the REIT paid on July 15. This specialty REIT refers to itself as a Homesite Option Purchase Platform. It acquires homesites for builders and then grants the builder an option to purchase the homesite at a later date. Then, Millrose uses the sale profits to identify new home sites. If the builder declines the option, Millrose has a readymade home site that it can sell to another builder or developer. Millrose Properties was created as a spinoff from Lennar (NYSE: LEN LEN.B) and has only been trading since February. Since then, Millrose Properties' share price has risen from $21.94 to its current price of $30.54. This is a new REIT with a unique business model, but its relationship with Lennar suggests that it may have at least one long-term partner for its projects. With that said, Millrose Properties' short track record certainly raises its risk profile. Benzinga's compilation of analyst ratings shows an average share price of $31.50, which doesn't represent tremendous growth from today's price of $30.54. It's important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and Millrose Properties helps to provide a product that every American needs. This could be a solid long-term growth Properties (NYSE: EPRT) is third on the list with a modest 1.7% dividend increase. That bump will net Essential Properties' shareholders $0.30 per share. This commercial REIT operates a portfolio of free-standing, single-tenant properties with net leases to long-term tenants. According to Essential Properties' website, its portfolio includes 2,190 units in 49 states. Perhaps most impressively, Essential Properties has a 99.6% occupancy rate. Benzinga surveyed a panel of 20 analysts, and the average price target for Essential Properties was $32.96. That offers some upside from the current share price of $30.67, and shareholders will also earn a 3.84% dividend. Essential Properties may not offer the excitement of an AI stock, but its share price has grown since its 2018 IPO price of $13.50. It has the potential to be a long-term winner, but this REIT is still in its very early stages. AI Sucks at Sudoku. Much More Troubling Is That It Can't Explain Why
Chatbots can be genuinely impressive when you watch them do things they're good at, like writing realistic-sounding text or creating weird futuristic-looking images. But try to ask generative AI to solve one of those puzzles you find in the back of a newspaper, and things can quickly go off the rails. That's what researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found when they challenged different large language models to solve Sudoku. And not even the standard 9x9 puzzles. An easier 6x6 puzzle was often beyond the capabilities of an LLM without outside help (in this case, specific puzzle-solving tools). The more important finding came when the models were asked to show their work. For the most part, they couldn't. Sometimes they lied. Sometimes they explained things in ways that made no sense. Sometimes they hallucinated and started talking about the weather. If gen AI tools can't explain their decisions accurately or transparently, that should cause us to be cautious as we give these things more and more control over our lives and decisions, said Ashutosh Trivedi, a computer science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and one of the authors of the paper published in July in the Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics. "We would really like those explanations to be transparent and be reflective of why AI made that decision, and not AI trying to manipulate the human by providing an explanation that a human might like," Trivedi said. When you make a decision, you can at least try to justify it or explain how you arrived at it. That's a foundational component of society. We are held accountable for the decisions we make. An AI model may not be able to accurately or transparently explain itself. Would you trust it? Why LLMs struggle with Sudoku We've seen AI models fail at basic games and puzzles before. OpenAI's ChatGPT (among others) has been totally crushed at chess by the computer opponent in a 1979 Atari game. A recent research paper from Apple found that models can struggle with other puzzles, like the Tower of Hanoi. It has to do with the way LLMs work and fill in gaps in information. These models try to complete those gaps based on what happens in similar cases in their training data or other things they've seen in the past. With a Sudoku, the question is one of logic. The AI might try to fill each gap in order, based on what seems like a reasonable answer, but to solve it properly, it instead has to look at the entire picture and find a logical order that changes from puzzle to puzzle. They find logical next moves but don't necessarily think three, four or five moves ahead. That's the fundamental skill needed to play chess well. Chatbots also sometimes tend to move chess pieces in ways that don't really follow the rules or put pieces in meaningless jeopardy. You might expect LLMs to be able to solve Sudoku because they're computers and the puzzle consists of numbers, but the puzzles themselves are not really mathematical; they're symbolic. "Sudoku is famous for being a puzzle with numbers that could be done with anything that is not numbers," said Fabio Somenzi, a professor at CU and one of the research paper's authors. I used a sample prompt from the researchers' paper and gave it to ChatGPT. The tool showed its work, and repeatedly told me it had the answer before showing a puzzle that didn't work, then going back and correcting it. It was like the bot was turning in a presentation that kept getting last-second edits: This is the final answer. No, actually, never mind, this is the final answer. It got the answer eventually, through trial and error. But trial and error isn't a practical way for a person to solve a Sudoku in the newspaper. That's way too much erasing and ruins the fun. AI and robots can be good at games if they're built to play them, but general-purpose tools like large language models can struggle with logic puzzles. Ore Huiying/Bloomberg via Getty Images AI struggles to show its work The Colorado researchers didn't just want to see if the bots could solve puzzles. They asked for explanations of how the bots worked through them. Things did not go well. Testing OpenAI's o1-preview reasoning model, the researchers saw that the explanations -- even for correctly solved puzzles -- didn't accurately explain or justify their moves and got basic terms wrong. "One thing they're good at is providing explanations that seem reasonable," said Maria Pacheco, an assistant professor of computer science at CU. "They align to humans, so they learn to speak like we like it, but whether they're faithful to what the actual steps need to be to solve the thing is where we're struggling a little bit." Sometimes, the explanations were completely irrelevant. Since the paper's work was finished, the researchers have continued to test new models released. Somenzi said that when he and Trivedi were running OpenAI's o4 reasoning model through the same tests, at one point, it seemed to give up entirely. "The next question that we asked, the answer was the weather forecast for Denver," he said. Explaining yourself is an important skill When you solve a puzzle, you're almost certainly able to walk someone else through your thinking. The fact that these LLMs failed so spectacularly at that basic job isn't a trivial problem. With AI companies constantly talking about "AI agents" that can take actions on your behalf, being able to explain yourself is essential. Consider the types of jobs being given to AI now, or planned for in the near future: driving, doing taxes, deciding business strategies and translating important documents. Imagine what would happen if you, a person, did one of those things and something went wrong. "When humans have to put their face in front of their decisions, they better be able to explain what led to that decision," Somenzi said. It isn't just a matter of getting a reasonable-sounding answer. It needs to be accurate. One day, an AI's explanation of itself might have to hold up in court, but how can its testimony be taken seriously if it's known to lie? You wouldn't trust a person who failed to explain themselves, and you also wouldn't trust someone you found was saying what you wanted to hear instead of the truth. "Having an explanation is very close to manipulation if it is done for the wrong reason," Trivedi said. "We have to be very careful with respect to the transparency of these explanations."

Award-winning and Manchester-born architect Lord Norman Foster was hired to oversee the renovations at Carrington. United noted that they planned to revamp the gym, medical, nutrition and recovery areas and insisted there was 'a design emphasis on creating more space for collaboration and innovation among players and staff.' The project ran throughout the entire 2024/25 season and was set to officially open just before the start of the upcoming campaign. Last week, Amorim said about the redeveloped Carrington, 'It's like a new start with different standards and I think to go to our building, to the new building is like a fresh start.' 'So, I think the timing is completely perfect to do everything. The good thing is that everybody's aligned what we need to do and now it's to win games, game by game try to win every game and the performance are really important as well.' Now, United have announced that the players have returned to a new-look Carrington following the completion of their United States pre-season tour. United players return to new-look Carrington The club relayed in a statement, 'While away in the States, the refurbishment of our Carrington training complex was completed and the players have now moved in.'
