India's net direct tax collections for the ongoing financial year 2025-26 declined by 1.39 per cent to Rs 4.59 lakh crore as of June 19, mainly due to a sharp surge in refund issuances, according to government data released on Saturday.

In the same period last year, net direct tax collections had stood at Rs 4.65 lakh crore, according to news agency PTI.
Gross direct tax collections, however, rose by 4.86 per cent to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, up from Rs 5.19 lakh crore collected during the corresponding period in FY24. The fall in net collections is attributed to a 58 per cent increase in refunds, which touched Rs 86,385 crore so far this fiscal, indicating improved processing and faster taxpayer services.
Advance tax collections between April 1 and June 19, 2025, showed a modest growth of 3.87 per cent at Rs 1.56 lakh crore, a significant slowdown from the 27 per cent year-on-year growth recorded in the same period last year.
Corporate advance tax collections rose 5.86 per cent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore, while non-corporate advance tax collections fell 2.68 per cent to Rs 33,928 crore.
Corporate tax collections overall fell by over 5 per cent to Rs 1.73 lakh crore, while non-corporate tax collections, largely personal income tax, saw a marginal rise of 0.7 per cent to Rs 2.73 lakh crore.
Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections also grew by 12 per cent, reaching Rs 13,013 crore during this period.
Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has introduced the 'e-Pay Tax' feature on its official portal to simplify the tax payment process, according to news agency ANI.
The broader tax reform agenda is also advancing, with the Income Tax Bill 2025 currently under review by a Select Committee.
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced that the new Bill, which aims to replace the existing Income Tax Act of 1961 with a more concise, litigation-free law, will be taken up in the monsoon session of Parliament.

The proposed structure also ensures zero tax liability for individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh annually due to a raised rebate of Rs 60,000, as stated by the finance minister in her Budget speech.
The government has invited stakeholder suggestions on the draft Bill to fine-tune the reforms.

FPI inflows remain resilient, SEBI move to further boost foreign investments: Analysts

Mumbai: The trend of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) experienced a reversal in April and demonstrated considerable strengthening in May, characterised by positive inflows, which continues as June progresses, analysts said on Saturday. On June 20, the FPI inflows in equity stood at Rs 7,940.70 crore, as per the NSE's latest data. According to market experts, the inflows recorded in May represented the highest level observed in eight months, signifying a resurgence of interest from foreign investors in the Indian markets. 'Nonetheless, geopolitical tensions, including the conflict between Israel and Iran, alongside global uncertainties, fostered a cautiously optimistic pattern in June,' said Vipul Bhowar, Senior Director-Listed Investments, Waterfield Advisors. Enhancing domestic fundamentals and a favourable long-term growth outlook indicate that, should global conditions stabilise, India may experience more sustained and stable foreign portfolio investment inflows in the future, he added. India's economy continues to stand out as one of the world's fastest growing and most resilient, backed by strong macroeconomic fundamentals and a vibrant policy landscape. The nation's regulatory institutions, led by SEBI, have consistently pursued reforms aimed at deepening market participation, enhancing transparency, and simplifying compliance to attract global capital. In a landmark move to deepen the debt market and provide much needed liquidity; SEBI has announced regulatory relaxations exclusively for FPIs investing in Government Securities (G-Secs) in the recent board meeting. 'This forward-looking measure arrives on the heels of India's inclusion in global bond indices like the JP Morgan Global EM Bond Index and Bloomberg EM Local Currency Government Index, which is expected to attract large-scale FPI inflows,' said Manoj Purohit, Partner and Leader, Financial Services Tax, Tax and Regulatory Services, BDO India. SEBI's move reduces compliance burdens by harmonising KYC review timelines with RBI norms, exempting GS-FPIs from submitting investor group details, and permitting NRIs, OCIs, and Resident Indians to participate in GS-FPIs with fewer restrictions. Additionally, FPIs now enjoy a more relaxed timeline -- 30 days for disclosing material changes, up from 7 days earlier. These changes reflect SEBI's risk-based regulatory approach and are poised to deepen FPI engagement in India's sovereign debt market. As India's economic fundamentals remain robust, these progressive measures will strengthen the country's appeal as a stable and attractive investment destination for global institutional investors, said analysts.

Tata Capital IPO coming next month? Sebi clears road for Rs 17,200 crore issue

Tata Capital is closing in on a blockbuster Rs 17,200 crore IPO, after receiving regulatory clearance for its confidential draft prospectus, setting the wheels in motion for a potential July launch and meeting a key Reserve Bank of India listing deadline for large non-bank lenders. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has approved the non-banking finance company's draft offer documents, The Economic Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The Tata Sons subsidiary is now expected to file its red herring prospectus (RHP) early next month, a procedural step that precedes the share sale. An email sent to Tata Capital seeking comment remained unanswered until Friday press time. Tata Capital filed its confidential draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) on April 5. Following Sebi's approval, the updated draft must be published publicly on the regulator's website before the company can proceed with the RHP. The IPO is expected to include both a fresh issue of shares and an offer for sale by Tata Sons, which holds a 93% stake in the firm. RBI mandate looms over timeline Under RBI norms, Tata Capital and Tata Sons are categorised as 'upper-layer NBFCs'- a classification that requires listing within three years and adherence to stricter compliance standards. In January, the RBI identified 15 such systemically important NBFCs for FY25, including Tata Capital, with a September 2025 listing deadline in place. Upper-layer NBFCs are selected based on asset size, interconnectedness and other regulatory criteria and are subject to more rigorous supervision. Strong financial footing Tata Capital has reported robust earnings ahead of the planned IPO. For the March quarter, consolidated net profit rose 31% year-on-year to Rs 1,000 crore, while revenue surged nearly 50% to Rs 7,478 crore. For FY25, the company posted a net profit of Rs 3,655 crore compared with Rs 3,327 crore in the previous year. Annual revenue rose to Rs 28,313 crore from Rs 18,175 crore. The company's unlisted shares have gained 13.5% in the past six months and are trading at around Rs 1,050 apiece, implying a valuation of nearly Rs 3.8 lakh crore.
