Beloved Inner Sydney pub The Norfolk has reopened with a fresh new look after a two year hiatus

Time Out24-04-2025

It's a big week for re-launches. Just as Freda's opens up its third iteration – Bar Freda's – in an intimate two-story space in Chippo, one of the most beloved pubs in the Inner City has reopened with a fresh new 'do. Straddling the border of Redfern and Surry Hills, The Norfolk is back in a big way – this time, with neighbourhood values (and a killer ice-cream lamington) at its heart. This is all thanks to the new ownership by Sydney group Solotel, who have taken over the watering hole from Public Hospitality, following a challenging few years (to say the least).
Back in 2013, Time Out Sydney described The Norfolk as 'a party pub… good at walking the fine line between scheduled activities and unstructured revelry.' And in its latest form, it's still flying that flag: with an excellent happy hour (4-6pm Mondays through Fridays), Tuesday night trivia, 'spin the wheel' every Thursday, a hefty meat raffle every Friday and a fun, welcoming vibe that will keep you long into the night. But this time, things have stepped up a notch – with an on-point cocktail menu (order the pickle Martini) and schmick, warmly lit interiors that honour the pub's Art Deco roots with a refined sense of style.
'The Norfolk has always stood for good times, great food and that sense of belonging you only get from your local,' says Marcella Guilfoyle, the pub's general manager.
A neighbourhood drinking hole at its heart, the new iteration of The Norfolk hasn't cut any corners when it comes to the booze list. With a focus on local, the wine list is ever-evolving and nicely priced, and alongside the local beers (including a Norfolk-exclusive dark beer from Yulli's Brews) you'll find a carefully curated cocktail list featuring aperitivo-inspired drinks and some delicious, creative non-alc options. Honouring their 'party pub' values, The Norfolk is also serving up batch-made cocktails (including Negronis, Americanos and a perfectly zesty Tommy's Margarita) on tap, available to order by the glass or by the carafe.
Reflecting the neighbourhood-focused ethos, the menu has been designed in collaboration with local businesses, and it's bloody good as a result. With Toby Wilson (executive chef and 'Chief Taco Officer' at the adjoining Ricos Tacos) at the helm, the kitchen elevates old-school pub classics, and draws on the expertise of local stalwarts to bring you the best of what Redfern has to offer. French onion dip comes with freshly baked focaccia from Good Ways Deli, and the beloved Redfern sandwich shop has also teamed up with local gelateria Ciccone and Sons for The Norfolk's signature dessert: a perfectly fluffy lamington ice-cream sandwich. Other menu highlights include the gloriously loaded chicken and gravy rolls, hearty-as-heck beef and VB party pies, and a signature house-made sausage roll that's sold by the inch ($2 per inch at happy hour).
Through and through, The Norfolk is a celebration of its setting – an ode to the people and businesses that build the culture of Sydney's quirky, colourful Inner City suburbs. And don't worry, Rico's Tacos isn't going anywhere.

How social media is transforming wedding days in Norfolk

A wedding content creator said described how more couples are embracing seeing their big day through the candid lens of a mobile with just an iPhone, Beth Denman, 25, and her team take thousands of photos and videos during weddings, which are edited into short form content for social media. She started Social Scenes from her home in Attleborough, Norfolk, two years ago and has now grown it into a team of five. "It's very candid and in the moment... it's the moments that are often missed by the bride and groom," Ms Denman said. She first discovered wedding content creation in 2023, on social media posts from Denman estimated that, at the time, there were just three other wedding creators in Norfolk."I thought that I could totally do this. I noticed that no-one was really doing it in Norfolk," she said. 'Blend in with the shadows' She estimates there are now about 20 people providing a similar service across the wedding planning website, Hitched, has reported a 586% rise in searches for wedding content creators in Denman said she plays the role of the "uninvited but invited guest"."We blend in with the shadows and we gravitate around the wedding to capture different parts," she added. Wedding creators such as Ms Denman work alongside traditional photographers and videographers to capture the big they may seem similar, Ms Denman said wedding creators worked candidly, sometimes providing content for couples within 24 hours."I think if people see it as the death of the photographer or videographer, they're getting the complete wrong conception," she added. "Content creators aren't a replacement for anybody... we are an addition." Wedding photographer Ellie Gillard agrees that the services they provide Gillard has been a wedding photographer in Norfolk and London for 14 years, and has photographed more than 400 weddings. "Content creators serve a different purpose in the grand scheme of things," she said."It's great for people who are very present on social media - the content that they give you are almost instant. "But people have had photographers at their wedding since photography began, and it fits that tradition."She has previously worked with content creators and believes their job is not as simple as some may think. "The growth of content creators means that some people think it's fun, that they can turn up and just point their phones at things," she said. "But there is more to it than that... it's really important that you blend into the day seamlessly." Follow Norfolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.

Kate Middleton's living room features elegant homeware buy that will make any room look timeless - and it's under £50

Kate Middleton has on occasion offered us a rare glimpse into her living room, which, like the royal's fashion, is a fusion of traditional and modern pieces. We first caught a look inside her home during 2020 when even the royals had to pivot to working from home. At the time William and Kate were either at Kensington Palace or Anmer Hall in Norfolk before moving to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor in 2022. Her love for a statement cushion is hard to miss and an array of plump throw cushions were scattered across her sofa. In 2021 Kate showed off her sage green sofa when she joined a virtual call with teachers to mark Children's Mental Health Week. Her choice of cushions featured a leaf print design with slight touches of red. Thankfully, the highstreet is full of affordable statement cushions which are guaranteed to add a touch of royal comfort to your own front room. Explore Singapore's best bars with this unique hydrating bar hop experience

Tell me more about the bars we're hitting up On the second hop, we're taking you to NOST, a cosy, low-lit cocktail cocoon lodged in one of the shophouses in Club Street. On the flipside, you'll also get to soak up the grandeur of ATLAS, Singapore's Art Deco gin temple, where the cocktails are as extravagant as the interiors. Then elevate your night at HighHouse – quite literally on levels 61 and 62 at One Raffles Place. This sky-high spot impresses with stunning city views, slick interiors, and bar bites worth the lift ride alone. And because we can't get enough of Stay Gold Flamingo, we're heading back there for the second time – but with a different treat, of course. Free transport will be provided to shuttle you from one bar to the next. What's on the cocktail menu? NOST's Zappel is a crisp mix of Glenlivet apple cider, fino sherry, and celery tonic water. At ATLAS, the S.W. Tönikum tickles the tastebuds with a layered blend of Monkey 47 Gin, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and Perrier that's fruity, creamy, and beautifully complex. HighHouse's Monk in the Jungle shakes things up with Havana 7 and monk fruit tea. Back at Stay Gold Flamingo, the Bloody Maria packs a punch with Codigo 1530 mezcal, kagome tomato, lemon, firewater, and saline for a spicy, smoky finish. Will there be snacks with my sips? You bet there are. NOST serves up the cheekily named Wagwan Bakwan – corn fritters jazzed up with scallions and carrot – and a deeply fudgy Nost Brownie topped with sea salt espuma. Over at ATLAS, you'll get truffled polenta croquettes with porcini salt and parmigiano reggiano, as well as a very special treat: popcorn cream cone. At HighHouse, it's a proper feast with buttermilk fried prawns in sweet-and-sour sauce and sticky lamb ribs piled high on fried potato salad, then topped with garlicky XO sauce. Stay Gold Flamingo's spicy-savoury combo of mala quail eggs and padron peppers makes a welcome return.
