Aero eSports stun Vamos to advance in MPL MY playoffs
Playing at Juara Stadium, Aero stormed to a 2-0 lead, wobbled slightly as Vamos pulled one back, but closed out the best-of-five series in the fourth game.
The victory seals Aero's place in the upper bracket semi-finals, where they will meet back-to-back champions Selangor Red Giants (SRG. OG) on Sunday.
Just last week, Vamos had edged Aero 2-1 in the regular season to clinch their playoff spot.
But crucially, Aero were missing their first-choice jungler Praba "Hazle" Balakosa, 18, who had returned to Indonesia to attend his high school graduation.
"We were unprepared against Vamos in the regular season," said Aero coach Abraham "Bam" Unida.
"His replacement, Alang Indra 'Rannqt' Roshid, didn't have enough time to build chemistry with the team before that match.
"Hazle made all the difference today. I'm proud of him. He played brilliantly and helped our mid-laner control the game's tempo."
Aero, notably, remain the only team to have taken a game off SRG. OG in the regular season, in a tight 2-1 loss.
Despite facing the reigning champions next, Unida is not planning any drastic shake-ups.
"We'll stick with the same hero draft and play to our strengths," said the Filipino tactician.
"We just need to cut down on our mistakes and make smarter decisions in-game."
Joining Aero in the upper bracket semis are DX Soul, who looked clinical in their 3-0 sweep of Monster Vicious.
They will take on second seeds Homebois in the other semi-final.

Herry's hopefuls
Top form: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun captured their maiden World Tour title in Macau earlier this month. PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi's experience could prove crucial to Malaysia's hopes of clinching gold in the World Championships which starts next Monday in Paris. In just seven months, Herry has superbly turned around the fortunes of the men's doubles shuttlers under him. Overall, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have won five titles among them since the Indonesian replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik have been the biggest winners after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open and also finished runners-up in the Malaysian Masters and China Open. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun impressively beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final in the home event while world No. 22 Roy King-Arif captured their maiden World Tour title in the Macau Open earlier this month. Can Herry guide one of the pairs to the coveted world title next? The Indonesian has produced world champions before when he was coaching in his homeland, most famously guiding Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to three titles in 2013, 2015 and 2019. Herry is now looking to use his experience to guide one of Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun or Roy King-Arif to the crown. The 62-year-old said that small details could prove the difference between victory and defeat in Paris. 'In the world meet, there is very little separating the top men's pairs. Whichever pair is better prepared and take their opportunities well will win the title,' said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I've been using video analysis to see the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. 'It's important to analyse all our opponents' latest matches as pairs always can train and come up with new strategies. 'I've also been having discussions with our pairs and tweaking their strategies to help them gain an edge over rivals.' Malaysia have won the world title only once so far when Aaron-Wooi Yik memorably ended the country's long wait in 2022 in Tokyo. The pair will again be Malaysia's best bet for the gold. Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a bye in the first round and will open their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Christopher Grimley-Mathew Grimley or Spain's Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo. A win could see Aaron-Wooi Yik play Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the third round. Roy King-Arif though need to overcome tricky pairs Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura from Japan and Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in the first and second rounds respectively if they hope to meet Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior from France in the second round. Malaysia will also be represented by independent world No. 3 duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will will play the winners of the match between Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Americans Chen Zhi-yi-Presley Smith in the second round.

Malaysia considers e-sports as long-term university course amid addiction concerns
KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry will hold discussions with the Higher Education Ministry to make e-sports a long term course at universities. Efforts to develop talent in e-sports have already begun through short-term courses by the National Sports Association with the cooperation of the National Youth and Sports Department. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh noted that many have begun viewing e-sports as a career after Selangor Red Giants won and returned with great prize money in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang competitions. She expressed concern as parents about gadget addiction being a serious problem in Malaysia and the need to find balance in this matter. A recent study by a Universiti Teknologi MARA lecturer revealed a psychological gap among youth, especially mental readiness that required serious attention. The study proved it was vital to ensure youth participation in e-sports would not affect their focus on academics and their social well-being. Hannah also addressed her ministry's efforts to connect its Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes with industry needs and developments. She confirmed her ministry was taking steps in that direction but challenges remain, including ensuring teachers had the expertise suited to the respective industries. Pioneer projects are starting for institutions in the sports field, not only motorsports but aviation sports that are being developed with the use of AI. – Bernama

KBS, MOHE To Discuss Making e-Sports Long-term Tertiary Course
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) will hold discussions with the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) to make e-sports a long term course at universities, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said. Efforts to develop talent in e-sports have already begun through short-term courses by the National Sports Association with the cooperation of the National Youth and Sports Department. 'After Selangor Red Giants (SRG) won and returned with great prize money (in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang competitions), many have begun viewing e-sports as a career. '… but, our concern as parents are there as gadget addiction is a serious problem in Malaysia and we need to find a balance in this matter,' she said in a reply to an interjection by Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar) while winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for her ministry at the Dewan Rakyat today. She said a recent study by a Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) lecturer revealed a psychological gap among youth, especially mental readiness that required serious attention. The study proved it was vital to ensure youth participation in e-sports would not affect their focus on academics and their social well-being. Hannah also answered a question about her ministry's efforts to connect its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes with industry needs and developments by saying that her ministry was taking steps in that direction but challenges remain, including ensuring teachers had the expertise suited to the respective industries. 'So now we're starting pioneer projects for our institutions first in the sports field, not only motorsports but aviation sports that are being developed with the use of AI (artificial intelligence),' she added. -- BERNAMA
