Shubman Gill doesn't need Jasprit Bumrah, India can win Tests without him: Panesar

India Today3 days ago
Former England spinner Monty Panesar has made a big statement days after the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy that India can win Test matches without Jasprit Bumrah. Panesar praised India's performance and discussed the changes in the team under young captain Shubman Gill. The former spinner was impressed by Gill's captaincy, highlighting that India's ability to win Test matches without their premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is a notable achievement. Mohammed Siraj rose to the occasion in the fifth Test at the Oval in Bumrah's absence and bowled a match-winning spell to script a thrilling six-run victory for India.advertisement'The biggest factor, as for Shubman here, is that he can win Test matches without Jasprit Bumrah. That's a massive acclaim. The best bowler in the world. He doesn't need him. I think India can win Test matches without Jasprit Bumrah. I think that's the biggest achievement from his captaincy,' Panesar told Hindustan Times.
Panesar also suggested that Jasprit Bumrah should be used more selectively, primarily for overseas Test matches where his impact is most important.'I think it's good if he does play the overseas Test matches, and probably you don't need him for home Test matches. India can beat any team at home probably without him, but for overseas Tests, he is the X-factor. They can probably tell him that we no longer need you for home Tests. But for the away Tests, we definitely do,' he added.Siraj is key to India's success: PanesarPanesar also had high praise for Siraj, who played all five Tests and bowled over 180 overs in tough bowling conditions. He stressed on the importance of his fitness. He pointed out that while Bumrah has the X-factor, Siraj's consistency and ability to bowl long spells makes him crucial for India's success, especially in overseas series.'Well, it just shows that Mohammed Siraj is the key now. They've got to build an attack around him. And his fitness is very important. Jasprit Bumrah doesn't have the fitness to play the five Test matches. So, he's again, in and out, kind of the guy to come in. But Mohammed Siraj can win the games now. As Bumrah has the X-factor, Mohammed Siraj is the key to whether they have a series win or not. So, for an overseas series away from India, Mohammed Siraj is very important now for Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill,' said Panesar.Meanwhile, after his match-winning performance at the Oval, there is massive scrutiny about Siraj's workload. Experts have suggest that his workload should also be managed as he played all 5 Test matches against England. He will likely next feature in the West Indies home series in October later this year.- Ends

WTC latest points table after New Zealand thrashes Zimbabwe, India's current position is...

New Zealand's overwhelming victory over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo by an innings and 359 runs grabbed attention for its dominance but does not affect the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 points table, and thus has no direct impact on India's current position. This is due to Zimbabwe's exclusion from the WTC cycle, despite being a full member of the ICC. Only the top nine Test teams as of March 31, 2018, were eligible to compete in the tournament when it started in 2019. Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe were left out and are still not part of the competition. The nine participating teams in the tournament are Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. India ranks third on the WTC points table With a points percentage of 46.67, India ranks third on the WTC table after the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy series. With 43.33, England is in fourth place, just behind. With a perfect 100 points from their first games, Australia holds the top spot, followed by Sri Lanka with 66.67. At this point, New Zealand's outcome has no bearing on India. The WTC 2025–27 campaign, which starts in December with a three-Test home series against the West Indies, has not yet begun for the Kiwis, who won the first 2019–21 cycle. New Zealand secured overwhelming victory over Zimbabwe But the Bulawayo match was historic. After declaring themselves at 601 for three, New Zealand easily defeated Zimbabwe twice, with Zak Foulkes taking five wickets in the second innings to secure the third-largest innings victory in Test history. Although this won't affect the current WTC standings, performances like this serve as a reminder that when New Zealand enters the competition, they could become one of India's toughest challengers on the way to the 2027 final.

The team that plays spin the best will win the women's World Cup: McMillan

Former New Zealand all-rounder Craig McMillan, the current assistant coach of the New Zealand women's cricket team, said that the focus of the 10-player group currently training at the CSK High Performance Centre (HPC) is on batting effectively versus spin bowling, as scoring runs against spinners will be the key in the upcoming women's World Cup (Sep. 30 to Nov. 2) in India and Sri Lanka. 'We've brought ten players over with the focus being on playing spin bowling, because that's going to be a major emphasis during the World Cup. It's an opportunity to try and upskill the girls as quickly as we can,' he said at the CSK HPC ground on Saturday. Five of the ten players - Brooke Halliday, Jess Kerr, Georgia Plimmer, Maddy Green, and Isabella Gaze - played against India in the three-match ODI series in Ahmedabad in October. On New Zealand's chances of winning the World Cup, he said: 'It's going to be a tough World Cup. There are a number of good teams. India, obviously, will go in as favourites with the team they have and their performance in England recently. The team that plays spin the best is probably going to be the team that goes on to win the World Cup. It's going to be a big factor.' Speaking about Shubman Gill's captaincy in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendlukar Trophy, he said: 'To me, he looks like he's gonna be a good captain. He will get better with experience. And he's the future. So, India will invest in him. 'He will get to know his team's game, which I think is really important - the style of play. How does India want to play? Under Virat Kohli, everyone knew how India played. They were aggressive. They were at the opposition. That might be a little bit different because of his personality for Gill. But he's got to work that out for himself with the coach and decide what sort of style India wants to play.'

Should Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue in ODI format? Sourav Ganguly answers: ‘It's difficult to say…'

In the absence of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India managed to pull off a famous 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The waning batting prowess of both batters was quite evident in the home series against New Zealand and in Down Under later in the red-ball game. Both Rohit and Kohli have stepped down ahead of the marquee England series, and the duo also called it a day in the T20 format after breaking the jinx of an 11-year trophy drought in Barbados against South Africa in 2024. However, both have decided to continue in the 50-over format and have been able to churn out runs quite consistently. But there have been speculations about their participation in the 2027 World Cup, especially with the performance of the youngsters. Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, though, backed Kohli and Rohit and said whoever is performing should play. 'It's difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket,' Ganguly said during AWL Agri Business Ltd Event. Speaking of India's performance in England and Shubman Gill's purple patch with the bat, Ganguly said: 'Indian cricket stops for no one. There is so much talent. Look at the way they all batted. Outstanding. That is how Indian cricket is. When Sunil Gavaskar left, Sachin Tendulkar came. As did Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman. When they left, Virat Kohli emerged. And when Kohli left, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Gill stood up,' former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly told Sports Tak. 'Indian cricket has so much talent that this will only keep on growing. We have a tremendous system, where domestic cricket is so strong. The IPL is such a platform. Then there is the A team, Under-19 team as well,' he further said. 'India played brilliantly in England. In the second innings of the Manchester Test, they were 0/2, and from there to have levelled the series at the Oval is indicative of a very strong performance. It's a young team; congratulations to Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir. They went to England with this team only to see everyone perform so brilliantly. I don't think that after 2002 or 2007, India's top six batters have consistently delivered such an outstanding performance in England. Be it KL Rahul, Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, or Washington Sundar. They have batted so consistently throughout five Tests, which was heartwarming to see,' the former India captain added.
