Vera Farmiga Joins Russell Crowe in "Billion Dollar Spy" Movie

Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga has boarded Walden Media's Cold War thriller "Billion Dollar Spy" opposite Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey. Cameras are about to roll.
Adapted from the acclaimed book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David E. Hoffman, "Billion Dollar Spy" follows Adolf Tolkachev (Crowe), who in real life risked everything to pass thousands of pages of top-secret Soviet intelligence to the U.S. Despite repeated rejections by a wary CIA, Tolkachev persisted, embodying the courage to stand against a regime that betrayed its people.
Finally finding an ally in CIA agent Tom Lenihan (Lawtey), Tolkachev was able to shift the balance of power, proving that true patriotism lies not in blind allegiance, but in the willingness to challenge a government when it strays from its ideals.
Farmiga will play Natasha, Tolkachev's wife.
BAFTA winner Amma Asante is directing. Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) wrote the most recent draft, revising a script penned by Ben August.
Pic is produced by Walden Media and Weed Road. Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan and Cher Hawrysh of Walden Media are producing alongside Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans of Weed Road Pictures. Jane Hooks and Naia Cucukov are executive producers.
Pioneer Stillking Films' Ildiko Kemeny, David Minkowski and Ferenc Szále will serve as co-producers.
Hanway Films is handling international sales. CAA Media Finance is handling domestic rights.
Farmiga received a 2010 Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air".
While her early feature credits include Jonathan Demme's "The Manchurian Candidate" and Joan Chen's "Autumn in New York", she broke out in a lead role in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed".
She is known for playing the role of paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in New Line's "The Conjuring" franchise which counts $2.25 billion including "The Nun" and "Annabelle" spinoffs.
Farmiga is set to reprise that role in the upcoming "The Conjuring: Last Rites" due out September 5. She's also starring in the movie about the Heaven's Gate cult, "The Leader", opposite Michael C. Hall, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Rami Malek's "Amateur" Sets Digital and Blu-ray Release Dates
Yara Sameh Egyptian-American Rami Malek's 20th Century thriller movie "Amateur," one of the year's best action thrillers, is all set to land on digital release later this month. Based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, it was adapted by Ken Nolan. British novelist and popular historian James Hawes is directing the movie from a script by Gary Spinelli. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing, with Malek executive producing. "Amateur" follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won't act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself. The movie's official synopsis reads: 'Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.' The movie has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season. Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights. "The Amateur" boasts an all-star cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne. Release back in April, the movie racked up solid numbers at the box office. Particularly in this modern era of franchises and comic book movies. Against a budget of around $60 million, Malek's action outing grossed $95.8 million worldwide, making the movie a financial success. Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Walli, Jacob Tremblay to Star in Ted Kaczynski Thriller "Unabom"
Yara Sameh Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Wallis, and Jacob Tremblay have signed on to star in "Unabom", a new thriller on terrorist Ted Kaczynski to be directed for Netflix and MRC by Janus Metz. Inspired by true events, "Unabom" originated as a spec from Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, the writers behind Radio Silence's forthcoming Art Bell project, who have developed the film alongside 2.0 Entertainment since its inception. The film follows Kaczynski's (Tremblay) transformation from Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber, who carried out a nationwide bombing campaign in the U.S. from 1978-95, killing three people and injuring 23. Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Crowe), Kaczynski's troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation. Sophie Cassidy will produce for 2.0 Entertainment, in association with MRC. Don Lee, Chalsen, and Greaves will exec produce. Recently wrapping Walden Media's Cold War thriller "Billion Dollar Spy" and the action thriller "Bear Country", directed by Derrick Borte, Gladiator Oscar winner Crowe will next be seen starring in Walden's "Nuremberg" along with Rami Malek and Michael Shannon. Known for turns in films including "Room, Wonder", "Good Boys" and "Doctor Sleep", Tremblay next will be seen starring in Neon's Stephen King adaptation "The Life of Chuck" from filmmaker Mike Flanagan, which opens Friday in select theaters. He'll also be seen starring opposite Nick Offerman in the crime drama "Sovereign". Most recently starring in such films as "Ferrari" and "Dumb Money", as well as Starz's "Three Women", Woodley's upcoming slate includes Potsy Ponciroli's "Motor City" and the second season of Hulu's "Paradise", among other projects. Wallis has starred on shows like "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Peaky Blinders", also appearing in films like "Silent Night", "Malignant", multiple entries in the Annabelle horror franchise spinning off The Conjuring, and more.
