Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Walli, Jacob Tremblay to Star in Ted Kaczynski Thriller "Unabom"
Yara Sameh Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley, Annabelle Wallis, and Jacob Tremblay have signed on to star in "Unabom", a new thriller on terrorist Ted Kaczynski to be directed for Netflix and MRC by Janus Metz. Inspired by true events, "Unabom" originated as a spec from Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, the writers behind Radio Silence's forthcoming Art Bell project, who have developed the film alongside 2.0 Entertainment since its inception. The film follows Kaczynski's (Tremblay) transformation from Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber, who carried out a nationwide bombing campaign in the U.S. from 1978-95, killing three people and injuring 23. Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Crowe), Kaczynski's troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation. Sophie Cassidy will produce for 2.0 Entertainment, in association with MRC. Don Lee, Chalsen, and Greaves will exec produce. Recently wrapping Walden Media's Cold War thriller "Billion Dollar Spy" and the action thriller "Bear Country", directed by Derrick Borte, Gladiator Oscar winner Crowe will next be seen starring in Walden's "Nuremberg" along with Rami Malek and Michael Shannon. Known for turns in films including "Room, Wonder", "Good Boys" and "Doctor Sleep", Tremblay next will be seen starring in Neon's Stephen King adaptation "The Life of Chuck" from filmmaker Mike Flanagan, which opens Friday in select theaters. He'll also be seen starring opposite Nick Offerman in the crime drama "Sovereign". Most recently starring in such films as "Ferrari" and "Dumb Money", as well as Starz's "Three Women", Woodley's upcoming slate includes Potsy Ponciroli's "Motor City" and the second season of Hulu's "Paradise", among other projects. Wallis has starred on shows like "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Peaky Blinders", also appearing in films like "Silent Night", "Malignant", multiple entries in the Annabelle horror franchise spinning off The Conjuring, and more. Claes Bang Joins Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey in Cold War Thriller ‘Billion Dollar Spy' Directed by Amma Asante (EXCLUSIVE)
Claes Bang ('The Square,' 'The Northman') stars as a KGB counterintelligence officer in 'Billion Dollar Spy,' a cold war thriller headlined by Oscar-winner Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey ('Industry'). Directed by BAFTA winner Amma Asante ('A Way of Life'), the film is produced by Walden Media and Weed Road Pictures. Hoffman's book by the same name, about the true story of Soviet spy Adolf Tolkachev. Ben August ('Class Rank,' 'Remember') and Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan ('Traffic') penned the screenplay. Variety revealed a first look of the film last week, as Cannes market kicked off. Crowe stars as Tolkachev, who was among the CIA's most invaluable assets during the Cold War. Disillusioned with the Soviet regime, Tolkachev risked his life to pass thousands of pages of top-secret intelligence to the United States. Lawtey plays his CIA handler inside Moscow Station. The cast is completed by Vera Farmiga, Willa Fitzgerald, Tony Goldwyn, Rufus Sewell and Justin Theroux. Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan, and Cher Hawrysh of Walden Media are producing alongside Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans of Weed Road Pictures. Jane Hooks serves as an executive producer. Pioneer Stillking Films' Ildiko Kemeny, David Minkowski, and Ferenc Szále will serve as co-producers. Naia Cucukov is an executive producer. Bang became an international star after his breakout performance in Ruben Östlund's Oscar-nominated feature 'The Square' which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2017, and six European Film Awards, including best actor for Claes. The actor's main credits also include 'William Tell;' 'The Northman;' 'Bonjour Tristesse;' 'The Girl in the Spider's Web' and the upcoming 'Wrecking Crew.' Vera Farmiga Boards Cold War Thriller BILLION DOLLAR SPY With Russell Crowe — GeekTyrant
Vera Farmiga is stepping into the shadows of the Cold War. The Bates Motel and Conjuring franchise star has joined the cast of Billion Dollar Spy , Walden Media's upcoming espionage thriller, where she'll appear opposite Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey. Directed by Amma Asante ( Belle , A United Kingdom ) and adapted from David E. Hoffman's acclaimed nonfiction book, Billion Dollar Spy brings to life the real story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet engineer turned CIA asset who risked everything to feed thousands of classified documents to the U.S. during the height of the Cold War. Farmiga will portray Natasha, the wife of Tolkachev, played by Crowe. The film traces Tolkachev's relentless efforts to reach out to American intelligence, even after being repeatedly turned away by a suspicious CIA. His determination eventually paid off when he connected with CIA officer Tom Lenihan, played by Lawtey. The story explores how Tolkachev's defiance shifted the balance of global power and challenges the notion of what patriotism truly means. As the official synopsis puts it: 'Despite repeated rejections by a wary CIA, Tolkachev persisted, embodying the courage to stand against a regime that betrayed its own people. Finally finding an ally in CIA agent Tom Lenihan, Tolkachev was able to shift the balance of power, proving that true patriotism lies not in blind allegiance, but in the willingness to challenge a government when it strays from its ideals.' The script comes from Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan ( Traffic, Syriana ), who revised an earlier draft by Ben August ( The Mauritanian ). While her early feature credits include Jonathan Demme's "The Manchurian Candidate" and Joan Chen's "Autumn in New York", she broke out in a lead role in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed". She is known for playing the role of paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in New Line's "The Conjuring" franchise which counts $2.25 billion including "The Nun" and "Annabelle" spinoffs. Farmiga is set to reprise that role in the upcoming "The Conjuring: Last Rites" due out September 5. She's also starring in the movie about the Heaven's Gate cult, "The Leader", opposite Michael C.
