'Top Chef' Season 22: Channelling their inner Tom Cruise, chefs take on 'Mission Impossible' inspired stunts

Yahoo09-05-2025

Top Chef meets Mission Impossible on this week's episode of Season 22. But it all started with a surprise announcement from Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, who told the seven remaining chefs that they'll be joining Kristen Kiss for the rest of the Quickfire Challenges, with all three judges considering both the Quickfire and Elimination Challenges to make their final cuts at each upcoming stage of the competition.
The judges were joined by Ilona Daniel, chef instructor with The Culinary Institute of Canada, for this week's Quickfire, giving the chefs a lesson on Canada's "food island," referencing Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), including famed P.E.I. mussels. For the challenge the chefs had to create a dish with P.E.I. mussels in just 20 minutes.
There was $10,000 up for grabs for the Quickfire winner, which went to Lana for mussel Italian toast with garlic mussel juice aioli, coppa, mustard, olives and capers.
Moving on to the Elimination Challenge, in honour of the upcoming Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning movie, actor Greg Tarzan Davis explained to the chefs that they had to present the judges with a dish that included a "stunt."
But as an added bonus, two advantages were up for grabs. First, the chefs were tasked with completing the CN Tower EdgeWalk, and secondly they had to do the lean forward and lean back stunt over the edge of the building.
There was also $10,000 up for grabs for the Elimination Challenge winner.
All the chefs completed the EdgeWalk, receiving an addition $75 to buy ingredients. But Lana and Massimo couldn't lean over the edge, leaving the rest of the chefs with 30 additional minutes of cook time.
The judges table this week included Binit Pandey, executive chef at Aera, Top Chef Houston and World All Stars winner Buddha Lo, chef and owner of Alo Food Group Patrick Kriss, Vinoteca Pompette chef and co-owner Martine Bauer, and actor Tarzan.
The dishes each chef presented, and judges feedback, were as follows:
Massimo — Pacific trout en croûte with sauce matelote, fondue de tomates Louis XIII, saffron emulsion — The stunt was the risk of cooking protein inside pastry in a short time — Buddha said it was fantastic and impressive that it was executed in two hours, Patrick echoed Buddha's comments saying that it was a big risk
Lana — "Fried fish basket" torchon of fish with cornmeal crumble, cocktail and hot sauce with tartar hollandaise — The stunt was "illusion" and eating all the components together should taste like the fried fish Lana's mom makes — Tarzan said it didn't "hit the mark," Gail said the "fried pile of cornmeal" tasted raw
Bailey — "Tiramisu fugazi" crepelle alla norcina — A savoury dish meant to resemble a tiramisu dessert — Patrick thought it was seasoned well and Gail said it was very satisfying, Tom liked the idea of a dish that loosed like dessert
César — Arctic char tartare, turmeric custard, fish tuile and romaine lettuce jam — The mission for the judges was to break through the tuile, and the sauce was the "secret weapon" — Buddha identified that the fish was handled nicely, but it needed acidity to cut through the sweetness
Vinny — Beef tartare with variations of beets, whipped foie gras and harissa — The judges were given a mission to extract the key through the smoke from under the "lasers" — The dry ice made the dish completely frozen, Tom was able to eat it before it froze and just said each component was "fine," but Buddha was impressed by the story
Shuai — Turducken with potatoes and leek, buttered peas and carrots, gravy — Martine said it had a "nice crispy texture," but wanted more vegetables for the portion of the meat on the plate, Patrick, Tarzan and other judges highlighted that they didn't know what the stunt was
Tristen — "Chicken impossible" king crab and sausage stuffed chicken wing with crab oil américaine — The judges had to pour the "antidote" on the chicken stuffed with a "virus," with 30 seconds to get the sauce out, otherwise it will be too cold — Patrick highlighted that the dish had a point of the view and the sauce was the best thing they ate all day, Tom highlighted that he couldn't pull off the trick with the sauce before it got too cold
The favourite dishes of the day were from Massimo, Bailey and Tristen, with Massimo being named the ultimate winner.
César, Lana and Vinny had the least favourite dishes, and César was ultimately eliminated, heading to Last Chance Kitchen.

Tom Cruise awarded Guinness World Record for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" flaming parachute stunt

Tom Cruise has become a Guinness World Record titleholder for a fiery "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" stunt. In the stunt, Cruise jumps out of a helicopter and deploys a parachute, then lights it on fire. The parachute was pre-soaked in fuel and lit ablaze, the Guinness World Records said in a news release. Cruise had to jump from at least 7,500 feet, the organization said. The flaming parachute could only burn for about three seconds before Cruise had to cut it away and deploy a backup chute. And sometimes, he was doing it while holding a 50-pound camera rig. Cruise conducted the stunt not once, not twice — but 16 times, the Guinness World Records said, making him the record holder for "most burning parachute jumps by an individual." Cruise was awarded the title on June 4. Tom Cruise attends the "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" premiere at Lincoln Center on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in New York. Evan Agostini/Invision/AP "Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!" said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records. "A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It's an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title." It's far from the first incredible stunt Cruise has performed in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Previous movies have featured him hang from the side of a plane, ride a motorcycle off a cliff and climb the world's tallest building. He is a licensed skydiver and has been a licensed pilot for over 30 years. In "Top Gun: Maverick," Cruise also performed a number of aerial stunts. "The audience can tell when something's been cheated, so it's important to be doing it all for-real," Wade Eastwood, a stunt coordinator on "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" told Guinness World Records. This is Cruise's second Guinness World Record. He holds a box office title for actor with the most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies. He has 11 movies that qualify, starting with 2012's "Jack Reader" and ending with "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning."

'Top Chef' tearful elimination in Milan determines the chefs moving on to the Season 22 finale

We reached a big location change for Top Chef, with the remaining four competitors landing in Milan, Italy. They met host Kristen Kish near the famous Duomo di Milano, where this week's competition started with a Quickfire Challenge. The chefs had to present their own version of a risotto dish in 35 minutes and there was $15,000 up for grabs for the winner. But the challenge was not being taken into account to determine who moves through to the finale. Tristen won the challenge making a West African risotto with heirloom tomatoes and charred buttered greens. Moving on to the elimination challenge, Kirsh introduced the three-part heat-to-head tournament, with the chefs tasked with featuring ingredients from Milan, Cortina and places in between. Round 1 was centred around polenta and the winner of that round automatically secures their spot in the finale. The three remaining chefs compete in the next round, focused on beet dishes, and the winner of that round moves on to the finale. Finally, the remaining two chefs move on to the third round of cooking, presenting a dish with gorgonzola cheese. Four Olympians and Paralympians joined Top Chef in Milan. Elana Meyers Taylor, five-time U.S. Olympic medalist in bobsled, Red Gerard, U.S. Olympic gold medalist in snowboarding, Declan Farmer, three-time Paralympic gold medalist in sled hockey, and Oksana Masters, 19-time U.S. Paralympic medalist in para biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para cycling and para rowing. Joining the judges panel was Ali Ghzawi from Top Chef World All Stars, and chef and owner of Alee, and Andrea Aprea, chef and owner of Andrea Aprea Ristorante Milano. Round 1 dishes were as follows: Tristen — Cou cou with pwason nan sos and epis-marinated mackerel César — Polenta cake with black walnut ice cream and candied prosciutto Shuai — Five-spice roast duck on creamy polenta Bailey — Creamy polenta with roaster mushrooms, hazelnuts and herbs Each judge held a paddle for the polenta dish they liked the best. Tristen and César each got one vote, Bailey got two votes and Shuai won with three votes, securing his spot in the finale. Ali said it was brilliant and the polenta really stood out. Tom Colicchio said the duck was beautifully cooked. Moving on to the second round, the chef had to complete their beet dishes in 30 minutes, while Shuai got to watch his competitors cook. Tristen — Glazed beets, smoked beet purée, beet pikliz and pork belly César — Beet tostada with chipotle mayo and salsa verde Bailey — Grilled beets with brown butter caper vinaigrette and whipped ricotta At the end of that round, Tristen got a whopping six votes, with César getting three votes for the best dish, and Bailey couldn't get any votes. Kristen said Tristen's dish was "technically flawless," while Tom said Bailey's big flaw was the dish was more cheese forward than beet forward. In the final round to get a spot in the finale, Bailey and César had 30 minutes to make a gorgonzola dish. César — Butternut squash casserole with gorgonzola sauce and sage pesto Bailey — Polenta gratinata with brûléed gorgonzola And in the final deliberation, César was eliminated from the competition. Tom said Bailey's dish was more "focused" on the gorgonzola, which pushed her ahead. And that takes us to the final cook of Top Chef Season 22.
