Trump's quiet bid for Iran talks failed as 'nobody could get Ayatollah on phone'
Trump had reportedly been working with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to try and secure talks between US and Iranian officials in Istanbul this week
Donald Trump's bid to quietly arrange a meeting with Iran was scuppered after nobody could get the Ayatollah on the phone, it has been reported.
According to US news site Axios, Trump had been working with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to try and secure talks between US and Iranian officials in Istanbul this week.
But Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, is in hiding and couldn't be reached to approve the talks.
It comes amid reports B-2 stealth bombers had left a US air base - apparently heading towards Guam or Diego Garcia.
The B-2 Spirit is the only aircraft capable of delivering the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, also known as the bunker buster bomb.
Trump told reporters on Friday that he is giving Iran a "period of time" to come to the table - and that he'd make a decision on whether to join strikes on Tehran's nuclear capabilities in the next two weeks.
"I'm giving 'em a period of time. We're gonna see what that period of time is. And I would say two weeks would be the maximum," he said at an airfield in New Jersey, en route to his Bedminster golf club.
He's set to come back from the resort this evening, to return to the White House Situation Room for more briefings on the conflict.
The phone call with Erdogan reportedly took place last Monday, when Trump was meeting G7 leaders in Canada.
Axios reports Trump agreed to send Vice President JD Vance and White House envoy Steve Witkoff - and possibly travel to Turkey himself to meet with Iran's leadership.
Talks between European ministers and Iran's top diplomat failed to stop a fresh round of strikes today.
Friday's talks, which aimed at de-escalating the fighting between the two adversaries, lasted for four hours in Geneva, but failed to produce a breakthrough.
European officials expressed hope for future negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he was open to further dialogue but stressed Tehran wasn't interested in negotiating with the US while Israel continued attacking.
A senior adviser for Khamenei, vowed in a social media post Saturday to make the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency 'pay' once the war with Israel is over.
Ali Larijani's threat comes as IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has become a major target for many Iranian officials who say his conflicting statements about the status of Iran's nuclear program incited the Israeli surprise attack last week.
Grossi told the United Nations' Security Council Friday that while Iran has the material to build a nuclear bomb, it appears they have no plans to do so.

Russia hands its own dead soldiers to Ukraine in sick move during body swap as Vlad's best pal frees prisoners for Trump
Some of the dead bodies even carried Russian passports SICK VLAD Russia hands its own dead soldiers to Ukraine in sick move during body swap as Vlad's best pal frees prisoners for Trump Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSIA handed over 20 bodies it claimed were Ukrainian defenders - but they were actually its own dead troops, says Zelensky. He said: "They (Russia) told us these were only Ukrainians and only service members. "But that's a lie, now documented. In some cases, these bodies even have Russian passports on them. "They can't even check who they're sending. We certainly want all of our warriors and the bodies of our heroes back. "But we definitely do not want Russians being handed over simply for the sake of quantity." Russia and Ukraine exchanged at least 1,200 prisoners of war over a week ago after the second round of direct talks in Istanbul. Meanwhile, Sergei Tikhanovsky, a prominent Belarusian opposition leader, was freed from jail along with 13 other political prisoners on Saturday. His release came after US special envoy Keith Kellogg met with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the country's capital, Minsk. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya - Tikhanovsky's wife and also a Belarusian opposition politician - publicly thanked Donald Trump, Kellogg and "all European allies" for securing her husband's release. Many Belarusians believe the 2020 election was rigged by Lukashenko's regime to keep him in power - a position he's held since 1994. Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians have fled their homeland since the brutal crackdown on opposition protests in 2020. Belarus has faced heavy Western sanctions for its brutal crackdown and backing Russia's war - including allowing Russian troops to use its land and hosting tactical nukes. Tens of thousands have been arrested in Belarus for political reasons over the past five years, says rights group Viasna. It comes as Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko signed a security agreement in December, finalising the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear arms in Belarus. The signing followed an amendment in Russia's nuclear doctrine, which for the first time placed Belarus under the Russian nuclear umbrella. It effectively gives Lukashenko control over the potential use of Russian tactical nuclear weapons deployed to Belarus in response to aggression. Putin said in a televised remark: "I'm sure that the treaty will ensure the security of Russia and Belarus." After the two leaders signed the pact, Lukashenko asked Putin to deploy the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that Russia used for the first time last month against Ukraine.

My Rotherham grooming gang rapist was offered access to our son from jail… it felt like his rights were put before mine
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHE was viciously raped and beaten hundreds of times, forced to have an abortion and used 'like a sex doll' from the age of just 14. Grooming gang victim Sammy Woodhouse gave birth to her rapist's baby - yet even when her abuser was behind bars her ordeal wasn't over. 4 Grooming gang victim Sammy Woodhouse was viciously raped and beaten hundreds of times Credit: PP. 4 Arshid 'Mad Ash' Hussain was jailed in 2016 for 23 offences including rape and assault on victims as young as 11 Credit: Handout The 39-year-old mum, targeted in Rotherham, South Yorks, had a child at 15 following sexual and physical abuse by gang ringleader Arshid Hussain. She said she had to face a further 'nightmare' when she was told the convicted paedophile could apply for parental rights over her son, despite serving a 35-year prison sentence. After being repeatedly abused from the age of 14, Sammy has tirelessly campaigned for victims. She welcomes the newly announced national inquiry but called Sir Keir Starmer 'vile' for initially opposing it, then finally making a humiliating U-turn last week as he travelled to the G7 conference in Canada. Sammy told The Sun on Sunday: 'I support a national inquiry as long as it will bring real change. They're saying it could take three years, but I'd wait a lifetime if it's effective. 'As well as holding people to account — including those in positions of power at the council, police and social services — I'm hoping it will address the issue of children born to perpetrators. 'Almost laughable' 'I haven't seen anything yet about abusers losing parental rights to children conceived as a result of rape, and that is something I have been campaigning for since 2018. 'Surely it's just common sense that they should be stripped of having access to their kids born as a result of grooming?' She said of her own son, born as a result of rape: 'Rotherham Council invited his father to apply for parental rights over my child without informing me, even though it was proven in court that he was a danger to myself and other children. 'It was another nightmare I had to live through. He'd had no involvement with my son, was in prison for the abuse I suffered, and wasn't even on the birth certificate. 'But I was told that the council had reached out to him — he hadn't even requested access himself — because human rights laws meant he had a right to family life. 'It's almost laughable. What about my rights, my son's rights?' Sammy's campaign to change the law has been backed by politicians including Rotherham MP Sarah Champion and former shadow policing minister Louise Haigh. Ms Champion said ministers could sign off new guidance making it clear that any rapist, abuser, or anyone who is a risk to a child does not have the right to comment on their future, adding: 'They could do that today but they don't. 'They sort of shove it out to councils to make their interpretations.' As it stands, the law allows a father to apply through courts for access or visitation rights to his children. That means he could have a say over his child's education, healthcare and where they can live. The victim and their children would have to attend court and could be cross-examined — having to relive the trauma all over again. A law introduced last year means perpetrators will automatically have parental responsibility stripped, but it applies only to those who have raped a victim aged under 13. It also applies only when someone has abused their own child or stepchild. CHANGE TO LAW IS VITAL By Natalie Fleet, Labour MP, Bolsover ONE in four of us has been raped or sexually assaulted, yet barely anyone is speaking about it. My rape was statutory rape, I was 15 and he was an older man. I have my birth certificate, my daughters, and a DNA test that proves it. Most women don't have that kind of proof a rape has been committed. That's why I'm using my platform to speak out about rape, despite me wishing it wasn't my story to tell. We estimate there are ten births per day from rape in the UK, yet there is no advice on the NHS website to tell you where to get help, no charity to support you, very few laws to protect you. I'm fighting for a change to the law. As it stands, a man can rape a woman, cause a pregnancy and have rights over the child he does not deserve. I'm tabling an amendment to the Victim and Courts Bill that means where a child is born as a result of rape, the father does not get parental responsibility. It's shocking children are the only proceed of crime a criminal can have lifelong access to. I'm determined to change that. Sammy, who has written a book about her ordeal, Just A Child, bravely waived her right to lifetime anonymity to expose the Rotherham grooming scandal. But she became pregnant at 15 in 1999, so the law would not apply to her. She said: 'I don't see how the Government can carry out a national inquiry and fail to address this huge issue. It hasn't just affected me and my son — so many victims of grooming gangs have suffered the same. 'It has happened all over the country, not just Rotherham. 'Children are being removed, being given to rapists and murderers, for their families to have access. I call it child trafficking through the system. 'Rape victims are also having to go to support centres to share access and see the men that raped them. 4 Sammy was repeatedly abused from the age of 14 4 Top row from left to right: Arshid Hussain, Bannaras Hussain, Karen MacGregor. Bottom row from left to right: Basharat Hussain, Shelley Davies, Qurban Ali Credit: Handout 'Women and children are being put at direct risk. It's just wrong, plain and simple.' Arshid 'Mad Ash' Hussain, who is ten years older than Sammy, was jailed in 2016 for 23 offences including rape and assault on victims as young as 11. He is not named on Sammy's son's birth certificate and has never had parental responsibility for him under its legal definition. But he was listed as a respondent in court proceedings instigated by Rotherham Council in 2017. Officials told him he could seek visits from his son and promised to keep him informed of all future proceedings. At a family court hearing, Sammy was told — with no prior warning — that Hussain could attend and seek legal representation. He chose not to, but would have been entitled to request visitation rights, or for his son to be given into the custody of his relatives. I just felt like a dead body on a slab in a morgue. Sammy Woodhouse Sammy said: 'Thankfully he never wanted any part in his son's life so never applied. But the point is, he should never have been given the option. I felt like his rights were put before mine or my son's.' In a statement at the time, Rotherham Council said: 'At no stage has it been the intention of the council to put any child at risk, or to allow any convicted child sexual exploitation offender to have care of any child.' It sought clarification from the Ministry of Justice as to how legal directions relating to Family Court proceedings should be applied. An MoJ statement said: 'Local authorities can apply to courts to request permission not to notify parents without parental responsibility about care proceedings, and courts should consider the potential harm to the child and mother when making this decision. 'This is obviously a very distressing incident and the relevant departments and local authority will work urgently to understand and address the failings in this case.' Victims' Commissioner Baroness Newlove said it was a 'perverse situation', adding: 'A victim of the worst sexual violence faced the prospect of continuing to be abused by her perpetrator, this time via the family courts.' Sammy's 2018 campaign calling for the amendment of the 1989 Children Act to 'ban any male with a child conceived by rape from applying for access/rights' attracted nearly half a million signatures. 'Absolute monster' She is also campaigning for grooming gang victims to have their criminal convictions quashed when they were coerced into crimes by their abusers. And she wants those in positions of power who turned a blind eye to the gangs to be held to account. She said: 'They should face criminal convictions. It's the only way to stop it happening in the future. 'At the very least, they should be stripped of their pensions.' Sammy has also campaigned — successfully — for children born from rape to be legally recognised as victims, so they can access any support they may need. She felt passionate about the issue after witnessing at first hand how hard it was for her son to come to learn that his father was a rapist. The new law was introduced in 2023, making England and Wales among the first nations in the world to officially confer victim status to children born of rape. Sammy was subjected to horrendous abuse from the age of 14, including rape, assaults and coercion, with threats to kill her family at the hands of Hussain. She has previously said: 'I was pretty much his sex doll. He was an absolute monster. 'I just felt like a dead body on a slab in a morgue.' In 2013, after years of abuse, she approached The Times anonymously with her claims. The resulting coverage led to the 2014 Jay Inquiry, which exposed the Rotherham gang and led to the discovery of more than 1,400 abuse victims in the town between 1997 and 2013.

West MUST neuter nuclear Iran before it gets bomb… alternative is arming regime that would rejoice in our extermination
SAY it loud – if the Islamic Republic of Iran has nuclear bombs, it is very bad news for this country, the free world and the human race. We are right to be wary of western intervention in the Middle East. 10 The invasion of Iraq eventually gave birth to Islamic State. Western intervention in Afghanistan left the women-hating Taliban in power. But all arguments for appeasement return to one question. Can the free world live with nuclear -armed Mullahs? The Islamist fanatics in Tehran shout the rhetoric of extermination — against Israel, the Great Satan (the US) and Little Satan (us). We have no choice but to take them seriously. Iran's leaders are in the last- chance nuclear saloon. President Trump has sensibly given them two weeks to stop building nuclear weapons. All of Trump's instincts are to avoid armed conflict. 'Going into the Middle East is the worst decision ever made!', he raged in 2019. Trump campaigned for his second term as a deal-maker, a peacemaker, an America-Firster more at home on the golf course than the battlefield. Missiles streak into downtown Israeli city as Iran breaches Iron Dome defences But sometimes we must fight for our freedom — and survival. If Iran cannot be persuaded to give up their nukes peacefully, then conflict can't be avoided. Unless we are prepared to see nukes in the hands of a regime that would rejoice to see us exterminated. Even Trump supporters are against the idea of the US once again playing Earth's policeman. 'Drop Israel,' urges Tucker Carlson, traditionally Trump's greatest cheerleader. 'Let them fight their own wars.' This is the MAGA line — abandon old allies, step away from NATO, let the freeloading foreigners fight their own wars. Don't get involved, dude! But all the experts agree that Israel simply does not have the firepower to eradicate Iran's nuclear weapon programme. Iran's Fordow nuclear enrichment plant is inside a mountain. Destroying it requires American hardware. Specifically, it requires American Stealth bombers carrying 30,000lb bunker-busting bombs. Right to worry And even that may not be enough. Trump has given Iran's Mullahs every chance to abort their plans. They should take it. As the world steels itself, it is worth stating — the Iranian people are not our enemy. Iran has been a sponsor of global terror, but nobody has suffered more under Tehran's religious fanatics than the people. Iranian women have been beaten to death for daring to remove their hijab. Any military intervention should be a last resort to remove the possibility of Iran ever having nuclear weapons. It should not be the start of a war against the Iranian people. We are right to worry about bombs falling on the nuclear facility. Europe does not want to see millions more refugees on the move. Or a Chernobyl -like disaster. But what should we fear more? Bombs dropped on fanatics who would dance on our graves — or a nuclear-armed Iran? Rachel a streetwise Eva Peron AT 9pm sharp every night on London's Argyll Street, the strolling West End crowds are greeted by an astonishing sight. Rachel Zegler, radiant Hollywood superstar, appears on a balcony dressed as Eva Peron and belts out a version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina that is so damn good you hope Madonna and Elaine Paige never hear it. 10 What a voice. What a performance. And what a shock to the system if you have been doing a spot of late-night shopping. Rachel – star of Snow White and Spielberg's West Side Story reboot – is playing Argentina's Eva Peron in Evita at the London Palladium until September. And for the show's defining moment, every night, she comes off the Palladium stage, on to that balcony overlooking Argyll Street, and she sings – like a cross between Aretha Franklin and an angel. Ticket holders who have paid to see the show watch Zegler's performance on a TV monitor. One punter wrote: 'Sorry – are you saying I've paid £350 for two tickets and she's singing the biggest number outside at people who HAVEN'T paid?' Er, yes. Like so many current West End shows, Evita has trigger warnings – telling fans not to be alarmed by loud music and flashing lights. But the greatest shock is that anyone expecting to see Rachel Zegler belt out Don't Cry For Me Argentina should not be sitting in the Palladium. They should be standing in the street outside. Do not Tipp-ex truth DOES the English language contain a more pathetically inadequate euphemism than ' Asian grooming gang '? Somehow that does not cover the worst sexual abuse scandal in British history. Asian – you mean Chinese? Or Indian? No, we don't mean that at all, do we? And grooming gang – what a criminally pitiful understatement for the systemic mass rape of white working-class girls. Why do we struggle to get our heads around the enormity of what has happened in Bradford, Rotherham, Manchester and a dozen other northern cities? Why do we find it so hard, even now, to look the truth in the eye? Because the truth is unbearable. Baroness Casey's report is devastating. In 200 searing, traumatic pages, one paragraph screams for attention. In the report of one child victim, the word 'Pakistani' was Tipp-Exed out. The announcement of an inquiry into over-whelmingly Pakistani gangs abusing vulnerable white children is long overdue. Let us – finally – hear the truth about how thousands of girls were failed by cops, Labour councils and social workers. No more turning away for fear of looking racist. No more whitewashing. And no more Tipp-Ex. Heely idiotic EYEBROWS are raised at the sight of Balenciaga's highly impractical high-heel trainers – yours for £820. But doesn't every generation wear unfeasible footwear? I can vividly remember the numerous occasions during the glam rock days when Billericay High Street chuckled as I fell from my platform boots like some kamikaze member of the Glitter Band. Mind you, my platform boots did not cost 820 quid. Rock on, Rod GEARING up for Glastonbury next week, Sir Rod Stewart – 80-and-a-half years old – reveals that he has had a sprint track installed in his Essex back garden. 'I keep myself very fit,' he says. 'I have an indoor pool. 'Frank Sinatra once said to me, 'Rod, the secret of being a great singer is having powerful lungs. Do lots of underwater swimming'.' We can't all have a sprint track in our back garden and health tips from Sinatra. But we can all be inspired by remarkable Rod, who says he still loves a drink. Rod Stewart once showed us how to be young. Now he is showing us how to grow old. Oasis fans quite something LIAM GALLAGHER bristles at an Edinburgh council official referring to Oasis fans as 'fat, drunk and rowdy'. Liam – mate – do you really want an Oasis crowd to be svelte, sober and polite? Even in middle age, Oasis fans always are mad for it. And never slightly sensible for it. Reign man Cruise TOM CRUISE is to be awarded an honorary Oscar after being nominated four times. He was nominated for Best Actor twice, for Born On The Fourth Of July and Jerry Maguire, Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia and Best Picture for Top Gun: Maverick. For my money, Cruise deserved an Oscar for his career-defining performance opposite Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, playing a spoilt brat on the skids who learns to love because of his relationship with his disabled brother. If you doubt that the Cruiser is a great actor, have another look at Rain Man. If Tom Cruise had a face like the back of a number 73 bus, he would have half a dozen Oscars by now. End is nigh street ONE of the UK's oldest shops, W.H. Mogford & Son in Bristol, a beautiful and beloved hardware store, is closing its doors this September. It is a miracle that it has survived for 160 years. 10 Around 13,500 high street retailers closed their doors for ever last year, at a cost of 169,000 jobs. Our high streets have been battered by online shopping. Car-hating councils. And apathetic police forces who stand aside for brazen shoplifters, as passive as gendarmes on the beaches of northern France. Shop local when you can. Spend your money in your community. The British high street is dying. And our lives will be diminished when it has gone.
