Kuwait committed to Arab Charter on Human Rights
CAIRO: Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah reaffirmed Kuwait's firm commitment to international conventions and agreements related to human rights, particularly the Arab Charter on Human Rights. Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday, Sheikha Jawaher underscored Kuwait's belief in the importance of regional cooperation in promoting and safeguarding human rights. Her remarks came on the sidelines of the meeting of States Parties to the Arab Charter on Human Rights, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo. The meeting focused on a Libyan proposal to amend paragraph three of Article 45 of the Charter's statute, concerning the mechanism for electing members of the Arab Charter Committee.
Sheikha Jawaher expressed hope that member states would reach consensus on the proposed amendment, noting that the committee currently comprises 18 members, and there is a shared aspiration to expand representation to include all 22 Arab League member states. She emphasized that any changes should be guided by a unified vision that reflects the collective will of the state's parties. Highlighting the committee's pivotal role, Sheikha Jawaher said it plays a vital function in monitoring state's compliance with their human rights obligations and in enhancing respect for human rights throughout the Arab world.
Commenting on Kuwait's engagement with the Arab Charter mechanisms, she said the country remains committed to Arab solidarity and collective advancement. Kuwait has submitted its second national report to the Arab Charter Committee, which is scheduled for review in the last quarter of this year. The country has received the committee's list of issues and is currently working on its responses in preparation for the official session.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Sheikha Jawaher met with Dr Mohammad Al-Shehhi, the newly elected Chair of the Arab Charter Committee, to congratulate him on his election to the post. The meeting also served to coordinate an upcoming official visit to Kuwait, during which the committee will meet with government and civil society stakeholders ahead of the national report's discussion. Sheikha Jawaher also led Kuwait's delegation to the 56th session of the Arab Permanent Committee on Human Rights, which convened at the Arab League headquarters with participation from all member states. — KUNA

KUWAIT CITY, July 27: Kuwaiti authorities arrested 44 laborers during a surprise inspection at a major construction site, in a sweeping crackdown on illegal workers amid efforts to regulate the country's labor market. The Public Authority for Manpower (PAM), in coordination with the Joint Tripartite Committee, launched the unannounced raid at the Al-Naeem Housing Project under the directives of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah. The campaign uncovered a range of labor violations, including workers found employed by companies other than their sponsors, laborers working in professions not listed on their permits, and individuals residing in Kuwait illegally. Among the violations: 12 workers were found under the domestic servant category (Article 20) but were working in construction. 1 worker was found violating the law under the shepherd category. 28 workers were employed by companies that were not licensed to operate on the site. 3 individuals were caught for residency violations. The arrested laborers were reportedly working under the names of Arab Contractors and First Group, without possessing the required permits and engaging in unauthorized job roles. In an official statement, PAM emphasized that the inspection is part of a broader campaign to enforce Kuwait's labor laws and create a safer, more organized work environment for all stakeholders. The authority affirmed that inspections will continue with full force and violators will face strict legal action. 'These measures are being implemented in collaboration with relevant agencies to deter violations and maintain the integrity of Kuwait's labor market,' the statement read.

ZHENGZHOU, China, July 26 (KUNA) -- Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Media and Think Tank Summit called on Saturday for enhancing media and think tank roles in promoting coexistence, tolerance, and cross-cultural understanding. This came in the Zhengzhou Statement issued at the summit, which kicked off last Wednesday in China, with the participation of over 400 officials and representatives from approximately 200 media outlets and think tanks. Xinhua News Agency quoted the statement as saying that the organization played a key role in fostering unity, trust, peace, and development in the region, calling on media and think tanks to act as bridges in sharing its achievements and promoting cooperation The statement urged SCO media and think tanks to promote member states' realities, development strategies, and approaches to help resolve differences, unify visions, and protect shared interests. It pointed out that maintaining regional peace is a shared duty of SCO members, highlighting the importance of implementing President Xi Jinping's Global Security Initiative to enhance global peace. The statement urged to highlight the outcomes of member state cooperation in economic integration and development, aiming to align national strategies with regional initiatives and share the benefits of progress. It emphasized strengthening the role of media and think tanks in promoting coexistence, tolerance among civilizations, and deepening understanding and friendship among peoples of SCO countries. The statement called for defending true multilateralism and improving global governance as they are in the common interests of all parties to the SCO.
