‘Strongly condemnable': CM Siddaramaiah slams SBI manager for refusing to speak Kannada

Hindustan Times21-05-2025

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday condemned the conduct of a State Bank of India (SBI) branch manager in Anekal taluk, who allegedly refused to speak in Kannada during a confrontation with a customer, a video of which went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.
In the now-viral video, recorded at the Surya Nagar branch in Anekal, the woman manager can be heard repeatedly insisting that she would not speak in Kannada and would only converse in Hindi.
The customer, invoking Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, argued that bank officials are expected to communicate in the regional language. Despite this, the manager stood her ground, igniting anger among Kannada activists and pro-Kannada groups, who have since demanded an apology and disciplinary action.

Reacting to the public backlash, SBI swiftly transferred the manager. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the move on X (formerly Twitter), calling the manager's behaviour 'strongly condemnable' and thanking SBI for its prompt response.
'The behaviour of the SBI Branch Manager in Surya Nagara, Anekal Taluk, refusing to speak in Kannada and English, and showing disregard to citizens, is strongly condemnable. We appreciate SBI's swift action in transferring the official. The matter may now be treated as closed,' he posted.

However, the Chief Minister stressed that such incidents must not happen again. Emphasising the importance of linguistic respect in public service, he called on the Union Finance Ministry and the Department of Financial Services to ensure that all banking staff across the country receive cultural and language sensitisation training. 'Respecting local language is respecting the people,' he said, adding the hashtag #KannadaFirst.

CM Siddaramaiah should resign and apologise: Former Deputy CM Govinda Karajola

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and MP Govinda Karajola has criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and alleged that the Karnataka government was working as a brand ambassador for companies with economic offences. Speaking to the media today at the BJP state office, Jagannath Bhavan, he said that 11 people died in the stampede that occurred at the RCB victory ceremony, and Siddaramaiah's government is directly responsible for this tragedy. 'Therefore, if Siddaramaiah has any morals, he should resign and apologise to the people of the state,' he said. The previous government did not come forward to celebrate these economic crime companies and did not work as brand ambassadors. He criticised Siddaramaiah's government for working as a brand ambassador. He accused the Karnataka government of being directly responsible for the tragedy that happened in Bengaluru on June 4. 'RCB 'Royal Challengers Bangalore' is one of the companies involved in two economic crimes in the country. This is a company of Vijay Mallya that was created to sell whiskey. The second is the IPL of Lalit Modi. He is also an economic offender of the country,' he said. He criticised the two fugitives who committed crimes and left the country after defrauding the country's treasury. He said that the people of this state and the people of the country should have been informed about the reason why Vijay Mallya's RCB company and Lalit Modi's IPL company became the brand ambassadors. Deputy Leader of the Opposition and MLA Arvind Bellada, former Minister Halappa Achar, former MLA Paranna Munavalli, and State Spokesperson Dr Narendra Rangappa were present. Top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. "India following zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism": Rajnath Singh highlights Op Sindoor, calls for global unity

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that India has demonstrated a successful strategy to defeat terrorism, laying out five key positions on how the global community can uproot such activities, and assured retaliation against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism while showing zero tolerance against this menace. In an article titled 'We've shown how to defeat terror,' published in an English Daily, Singh reflects on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India's subsequent response through Operation Sindoor, emphasising the nation's resolve under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'Under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi, India is following a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. Fighting against terror is not optional but it's our collective duty. It's high time the global community unites to uproot this menace from its roots. Read my article... where I reflect on India's fight against terror and the path forward for the world,' the Defence Minister stated in a post on X. In another post, he further added that terrorism was a whip to humanity, referencing another article published in another Hindi Daily, noting the need for global unity and measures to take effective action against terrorism. 'Terrorism is a scourge on humanity. India's stand under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very clear, and that is of zero tolerance. In my article... I have stressed the need for global unity against terrorism and discussed the measures available to the global community to take effective action against terrorism,' Singh stated in another post on X. In the early hours of May 7, Indian Armed Forces successfully hit nine terror camps using special precision munitions in a coordinated operation called Operation Sindoor, destroying four camps in Pakistan, including Bahawalpur and Muridke, and five in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The strikes on all nine targets were successful, which targeted top Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leaders involved in sponsoring terrorist activities in India. Following the attack, intense clashes took place between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan's attempted drone attacks on Indian cities along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) and shelling along the LoC. India also retaliated with targeted strikes on Pakistani military installations, causing significant damage. After which, a cessation of hostilities between the two nations was agreed on May 10. BJP leader Jagmohan Singh Raju writes to PM Narendra Modi for release of Sikh prisoners

On the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state general secretary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Singh Raju wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds. Sharing the letter on his Facebook page, Raju said, 'Release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds – put final lid on the Dark Era of 1980s in Punjab (sic).' In the letter penned in Hindi, he wrote: 'Today, June 6, is the day of pain and anger for the Sikh Panth. On this day in 1984, as you uttered in the Parliament, an attack was launched on the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, Akal Takht. You are the first Prime Minister who officially recognised this as an attack on the Akal Takht. Even Sikh PM Manmohan Singh did not have courage to accept this reality.' 'The attack on Akal Takht wounded the Sikh psyche and pride permanently. Due to lack of mature leadership needed to pacify hurt sentiments of Panth, Sikh youths opted for insurgency against this oppression. In revenge, Indira Gandhi, the then PM, was assassinated, followed by Sikh massacre in Delhi…This bloody era eliminated a generation of Sikh youths,' read the letter. 'Modi ji, I humbly request you to reconsider the release of Sikh prisoners on grounds of justice and compassion. They committed the crime because they were enraged over the attack on Golden Temple. They have served the adequate punishment for their offences. Time has come now to show compassion for them,' he wrote Raju unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Amritsar East.
