Yemen's Houthis claim deadly Red Sea attack on merchant ship

CNA09-07-2025
DUBAI: Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility Wednesday (Jul 9) for a deadly attack that sank a merchant vessel earlier this week, their second attack on Red Sea shipping in 24 hours as they resumed their campaign in the key waterway.
The US embassy later said on Wednesday that Houthis kidnapped mariners from the ship they attacked.
The Eternity C, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, was badly damaged in the attack that started on Monday and continued into Tuesday, before the ship sank.
Yemen's rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, which came a day after they boarded and sank the Magic Seas - their first attack on shipping this year.
Their resumed attacks mark the end of a months-long lull and threaten a May ceasefire with the United States that ended weeks of strikes on Houthi targets.
"The naval force of the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted the ship Eternity C," Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said, claiming that the vessel was headed for the Israeli port of Eilat and was attacked in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
19 MISSING
Saree said the Houthis had "moved to rescue a number of the ship's crew, provide them with medical care, and transport them to a safe location".
The attack was carried out with an unmanned vessel and six cruise and ballistic missiles, Saree added.
Operation Aspides - the EU naval task force in the Red Sea - told AFP that five Filipinos and one Indian had been rescued, while 19 others were still missing.
Rescue and search operations are ongoing, it said.
The UN envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed "grave concern" over attacks that resulted in "civilian loss of life and casualties as well as the potential for environmental damage".
"Yemen must not be drawn deeper into regional crises that threaten to unravel the already extremely fragile situation in the country," he said.
A total of 25 people were aboard the Eternity, the EU task force said. The Philippine authorities said 21 were citizens.
On Tuesday, Aspides said three people were killed in the attack on the Eternity C and at least two were injured - including a Russian electrician who lost a leg.
"CEASE AGRESSION"
Saree warned "all companies dealing with the ports of occupied Palestine (Israel) that their ships and crews will be targeted" until Israel has been forced to "lift the siege on our brothers in Gaza, cease the aggression against them and end the ongoing war".
The Houthis began their attacks on Red Sea shipping in late 2023, saying they were in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
On Monday, they said they hit the Magic Seas because its owner had done business with Israel and used its ports.
The rebels released a video showing masked gunmen storming the Magic Seas and simultaneous explosions that scuttled the bulk carrier.
Both ships had likely been attacked "due to prior Israeli port calls or ownership/ship manager affiliations", according to the Joint Maritime Information Centre, run by Western navies.
Huthi attacks have prompted many shipping firms to make the time-consuming detour around the southern tip of Africa to avoid the Red Sea, which normally carries about 12 per cent of global trade.
The Houthis had threatened to renew their attacks after the Gaza ceasefire collapsed in March, prompting a deadly US bombing campaign against the rebels that ended with a May ceasefire.
However, the rebels said they would continue to target "Israeli ships".
In a statement on Tuesday, the US embassy in Yemen blamed the Huthis for the Eternity C attack, calling it "the most violent" yet and accusing them of "undermining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea".
Israel, which has also come under direct missile and drone attack by the Houthis, has carried out multiple strikes on rebel targets in Yemen, most recently on Sunday.

Israel bombards Gaza City; Hamas leader due in Cairo as foreign ministers warn of ‘unimaginable' suffering

CAIRO: Israeli planes and tanks bombarded eastern Gaza City overnight, killing at least 11 people, witnesses and medics said on Tuesday (Aug 12), as Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya prepared to hold talks in Cairo aimed at reviving a US-backed ceasefire plan. The latest round of indirect negotiations in Qatar ended in deadlock in late July, with Israel and Hamas trading blame over the lack of progress on a proposed 60-day truce and hostage release deal. Israel has since said it will launch a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City, which it captured shortly after the war began in October 2023 before later pulling out. PLAN DRAWS GLOBAL WARNING ON HUMANITARIAN CRISIS Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to expand military control over Gaza, expected in October, has fuelled global criticism over the devastation, displacement and hunger affecting the enclave's 2.2 million people. It has also stirred dissent in Israel, with the military chief of staff warning the move could endanger surviving hostages and prove a death trap for Israeli soldiers. About one million Palestinians are estimated to remain in Gaza City and surrounding areas. Foreign ministers of 26 countries, including Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Italy and Latvia, said on Tuesday the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached 'unimaginable levels' and urged Israel to allow unrestricted aid. 'Famine is unfolding before our eyes. Urgent action is needed now to halt and reverse starvation,' they said in a joint statement, calling for the opening of all crossings and routes to allow a 'flood of aid' including food, water, medicine, fuel and shelter supplies. Israel denies responsibility for hunger, accusing Hamas of stealing aid. It says it has taken steps to increase deliveries, including pausing fighting in some areas and establishing protected routes for aid convoys. Some countries have begun airdropping supplies over Gaza, while Western capitals say far more aid is urgently required. TALKS IN EGYPT A Palestinian official told Reuters that Hamas was ready to return to the negotiating table, and that its leaders visiting Cairo on Tuesday would reaffirm that position. Egypt's state-affiliated Al Qahera News said the delegation had arrived 'for consultations on ceasefire talks'. However, gaps remain over issues such as the extent of any Israeli military withdrawal and Hamas disarmament. A Hamas official said the group was ready to hand over governance to a non-partisan committee, but would not give up its weapons before a Palestinian state is established. Netanyahu, whose far-right coalition partners want an Israeli takeover of all Gaza, has vowed the war will not end until Hamas is eradicated. DEATHS IN STRIKES, STARVATION Gaza's health ministry said 89 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours. Overnight strikes killed seven people in two houses in Gaza City's Zeitoun suburb and four in an apartment building in the city centre, medics said. In southern Gaza, five people, including a couple and their child, were killed in a strike on a Khan Younis house, while four others died in an attack on a tent encampment in nearby Mawasi. The Israeli military said it was checking the reports and that its forces take precautions to limit civilian casualties. It added that dozens of militants had been killed in north Gaza in the past month, and more tunnels destroyed. Five more people, including two children, died of starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, raising the total to 227 deaths, including 103 children, since the war began, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel disputes those figures. The conflict erupted on Oct 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in southern Israel. Israel's subsequent offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials.

Singapore to deliver ninth tranche of humanitarian aid to Gaza

SINGAPORE: Singapore will deliver a ninth tranche of humanitarian aid to Gaza, consisting of medical and food supplies. The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Tuesday (Aug 12) that it has deployed a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) C-130 transport aircraft to Jordan. "At the invitation of the Jordanian government, the C-130 will conduct airdrop operations alongside other foreign air forces to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza," said MINDEF. The aid comprises medical supplies from the Ministry of Health and food supplies from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including Humanity Matters, Caritas Humanitarian Aid and Relief Initiatives Singapore, Mercy Relief, and the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation. MINDEF added that the delivery of these supplies is coordinated through the Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre. A total of 58 defence and military personnel were deployed in support of this humanitarian effort, MINDEF said. Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamed, Minister of State for Defence Desmond Choo, Charge d'Affaires at the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Singapore Qais Biltaji, Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador to Jordan Shamsher Zaman, and Singapore's Representative to the Palestinian Authority Hawazi Daipi were present at the send-off ceremony for the aircraft at Paya Lebar Air Base. Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim also attended, meeting with representatives from the participating NGOs. This latest tranche of aid comes just two days after Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) expressed concern over Israel's plans to expand military operations in Gaza. On Aug 10, MFA called the proposed expansion "a dangerous and unacceptable course of action that will lead to more mass displacement of civilians and exacerbate the already dire humanitarian crisis". "The Israeli government must immediately facilitate the full and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid," said an MFA spokesperson. "All parties must protect civilian infrastructure and civilians, especially those accessing humanitarian supplies, in accordance with international humanitarian law." On Tuesday, Mr Zaqy said that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) stands ready to support the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. "This is one way to show how the whole community rallies together to show compassion and shows how it brings together all the resources and Singaporeans," he said. He added that this mission also reflects the SAF's "operational readiness, commitment, and professionalism" in aiding those in need - especially through the support of the SAF's Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre, which has helped bring together the food packages. Associate Professor Faishal also expressed his gratitude to the Muslim community and all Singaporeans for their generosity, compassion and prayers. "Every act of giving is a light in the darkness for someone in need," he said. "Let us continue to keep Gaza in our prayers, support humanitarian initiatives, and work towards a future of peace, safety, and dignity for all." This is the second time the RSAF's C-130 has conducted airdrop operations to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, said MINDEF.
