Bengaluru Stampede: Karnataka HC grants relief to RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale, directs him to surrender passport

Time of Indiaa day ago

The
Karnataka High Court
on Thursday granted interim protection from arrest to
Nikhil Sosale
, marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in connection with the tragic stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The court also directed Sosale to surrender his passport as a condition of the relief.
Sosale had moved the court seeking anticipatory bail and protection from coercive action after an FIR was lodged naming RCB, the
Karnataka State Cricket Association
(KSCA), and event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks.
The FIR alleged negligence and public endangerment under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following the fatal incident that claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.
The stampede occurred during a public celebration organized to mark RCB's historic maiden IPL title victory.
The event, held at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, saw an unexpectedly massive turnout, overwhelming crowd control arrangements and resulting in chaos. Multiple eyewitness accounts pointed to inadequate barricading and delayed medical assistance, raising questions about event preparedness.

Court reserves ruling, later grants interim relief
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the High Court had reserved its verdict on Sosale's plea.
Delivering its decision on Thursday, the court ruled that Sosale be released from immediate arrest but imposed the condition that he cooperate fully with the investigation and surrender his passport to ensure his availability during the proceedings.
KSAC officials already under interim protection
This decision comes days after the same court granted interim relief to key KSCA officials, including President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A Shankar, and Treasurer ES Jairam. Justice SR Krishna Kumar, who is hearing the matter, had earlier restrained the police from initiating coercive action against them, provided they continue to cooperate with the investigation. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 12.
The controversy escalated last week after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah publicly ordered arrests of officials from KSCA, RCB, and DNA Entertainment, stating that those responsible for the tragedy would be held accountable.
The KSCA responded by filing a petition to quash the FIR, arguing that it had limited involvement in the event's logistics and was not directly accountable for the mishap.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on establishing liability for the overcrowding and lack of adequate safety measures at what was intended to be a celebratory occasion for cricket fans in Bengaluru.

India Vs India A Live Streaming: How To Watch Intra-Squad Test Match Online And Match Timing Details?

Cricket fans hoping to catch live action of the India vs India A intra-squad Test match in Beckenham, England, will be disappointed—this match will not be streamed or broadcast in India. Conducted behind closed doors, this strategic move by head coach Gautam Gambhir prioritizes preparation and privacy over publicity. The idea is to shield team tactics from England's analysts ahead of the crucial five-match Test series beginning June 20 at Headingley. Despite the lack o f a live telecast, updates on India vs India A live cricket score will be available across sports portals, offering real-time insights and highlights from the high-stakes warm-up fixture. More than just a warm-up, the India vs India A unofficial Test match serves as the final dress rehearsal before India's headline tour of England. Spanning four days and 360 overs of simulation cricket, the game is designed to recreate real match scenarios and push players to Test match intensity under English conditions. The match is India's answer to acclimatization. From transitioning out of the IPL's white-ball frenzy to facing the red Dukes ball under overcast skies, this game is where technique, temperament, and tactical roles are put to the test. What Are the Key Player Battles to Watch Out For? With Jasprit Bumrah returning to red-ball cricket after a six-month hiatus, all eyes are on India's pace spearhead. Having last played a Test during the Australia tour, Bumrah's performance across multiple spells will determine his match fitness and readiness for the grueling England series. The contest also shines the spotlight on Shubman Gill as he takes charge of the Indian Test team for the first time. His leadership, calm demeanor, and batting rhythm will all be under scrutiny as he guides a blend of youth and experience. Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite an inconsistent showing in earlier warm-ups against the England Lions, has a point to prove. He'll be challenged by Anshul Kamboj, a rising India A pacer who's impressed selectors with his sharp movement and discipline. Rishabh Pant, returning as vice-captain and wicketkeeper, will be keen to get game time in red-ball cricket, especially after a long recovery period. Which Selection Dilemmas Could Be Solved in This Match? One of the biggest selection calls the Indian think tank must make is around the third pacer slot. Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna are both in contention to join Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the pace lineup. This intra-squad match could tilt the balance based on who adapts better to swing-friendly conditions. In the spin department, the Ravindra Jadeja vs Kuldeep Yadav debate continues. Jadeja's all-round prowess adds depth, but Kuldeep's wrist spin could be a potent weapon against an attacking England side. The all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy have had mixed tours so far. This game could either strengthen their case or open the door for others ahead of the first Test. When and Where Is the India vs India A Match Taking Place? The India vs India A Test match will be held at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham from June 13 to June 16. The match starts at 11:00 AM local time / 3:30 PM IST, offering optimal playing conditions for red-ball cricket. How Does This Match Fit into India's Bigger Strategy? The closed-door format and intense match simulation replicate India's pre-Australia Test series preparation earlier this year—a method that yielded success. By staying away from the spotlight, the players can focus solely on strategy refinement, fitness assessment, and on-field bonding. With the India vs England Test series around the corner, this intra-squad clash is more than just practice—it's a proving ground. Every over bowled and every run scored could shape India's playing XI and overall approach in what promises to be one of the year's most anticipated cricketing rivalries.

When the matter came up for hearing, the documents in Kannada were submitted in a sealed envelope before a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice C M Joshi. Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty assured the bench that an English translation would be provided in two days. This will also be submitted in a sealed envelope, the court said. It further directed that all official communications, both offline and online, from stakeholders concerned be kept in the custody of the Chief Secretary of Karnataka. The matter was posted for further hearing on June 17. The stampede that occurred during the celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) historic 2025 IPL victory over Punjab Kings on June 3, had claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people, prompting the HC to take cognizance on June 5. The court had issued a notice to the Karnataka government to investigate the cause and propose preventive measures. AG Shetty had requested for a sealed-envelope submission, stating that in the pending bail petition being heard concurrently, any statements made in the case were being used by the petitioner. The court permitted Shetty to file the reply in a sealed cover, emphasising safe custody by the Registrar General.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel admits he was nervous ahead of England tour

India bowling coach Morne Morkel said he was a little bit nervous going into the tour of England due to the lack of red-ball cricket the side has had in the past few months. India last played a Test match in January during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the players have since been occupied with white-ball assignments, including the Champions Trophy and the IPL. advertisementThe England tour will be the start of the new World Test Championship cycle for India, having missed out on the 2023-25 final. Speaking to the BCCI's official website, Morkel said he is happy with the start so far to the training camp in England. The bowling coach is happy with the progress of the players and feels that confidence and team spirit is needed heading into the Test series. "All in all, happy with the start so far. I was a little bit nervous in terms of the lack of red ball we've played but seeing how the guys are moving around and training in the last three days is a pleasing sight. We have a fantastic group. There's some quality energy and that's what you need. You need to go into a Test series confident and have that team spirit," said Morkel. advertisement Morkel feels that consistency will be crucial in England and is happy with the variety in the bowling lineup this time around for the tour. "I think consistency is crucial in England and there is consistency when we practice, there's consistency off the field, finding your process, what's going to work for you as an individual," said Morkel. "We've got a great variation, variety in our attack, guys with different skill sets so they can do that and still execute the basics well."India will be playing an intra-squad match, starting from Friday, June 13. Morkel feels the conditions so far have suited the bowlers more. The bowling coach said his key advice to the bowlers will be to show character when the wicket goes a bit flat. "In the two-day practice so far, the conditions suited the fast bowlers. It was testing for the batters which also in a way helps them to prepare for what's to come," said Morkel. "There's been a lot of good banter between bat and ball but I think it's only because the wickets are a lit bit spicy. As soon as the wickets go flat, the bowlers tend to back off."advertisement"I'm going to tell them not to only talk when the wickets are nipping around but when its flat, that's where we're going to need the character at all times."India will face England in the first Test at Headingley, starting from June 20.
