IIT Kharagpur mulls smaller ceiling fans in hostels to prevent suicides

"Apart from taking steps like reaching out to students on campus 24x7, interaction with parents of boarders every alternate month and 'campus mothers' programme , and having permanent psychiatrists, we are also exploring steps like scaling down size of ceiling fans so that it cannot be used for any other purpose," institute director Suman Chakraborty told PTI.
Chakraborty said, "This is not an alternative to addressing mental health issues. But to avoid certain situations triggered by sudden impulses to self-destruct oneself, when none may be around, during certain moment."
He added that the presence or absence of tools to cause self-harm can make a crucial difference in critical moments, especially when backed by counselling and emotional support.
To a question, the director said, "We are mulling to replace fans of all the 21 hostels, housing around 16,000 students, with smaller ones in phases. So can't give a timeline immediately."
A 10-member fact-finding team has been formed by the premier institute to explore the circumstances and factors which led to the death of fourth-year BTech student Ritam Mondal who was found hanging in his hostel room on July 18.
Mondal, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student, had returned to campus on July 15, a day after the convocation, following a two-month vacation.
On January 12, Shaon Malik, a third-year electrical engineering student, died by suicide.
On April 20, Aniket Walker, a final-year Ocean Engineering student from Maharashtra, was found hanging in JC Bose Hall.
On May 4, Mohammad Asif Qamar, a third-year BTech student from Bihar, was found dead in his room at Madan Mohan Malviya Hall.
The institute also installed bar codes on the gates of every hostel room where the helpline number of counselling services can be scanned by a student in emotional stress at any hour.

UK injects 100 million pounds to boost border security
Agency: PTI London, Aug 4 (PTI) The UK on Monday announced that it will invest 100 million pounds as part of its efforts to control soaring illegal migration. The new funding is earmarked for up to 300 extra National Crime Agency (NCA) officers, state-of-the-art detection technology and new equipment targeting criminal networks behind people smuggling, the Home Office said. The NCA's Border Security Command and other law enforcement agencies will benefit from a cash injection to strengthen investigations targeting smuggling kingpins and disrupt their operations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and beyond, it added. The funding package will go towards supporting a new pilot of the 'one-in, one-out" UK returns agreement, which will see migrants who arrive illegally on small boats returned to France. It will also support the new powers to be introduced when the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill becomes law, criminalising the creation and publication of online material that promotes a breach of immigration law. 'This additional funding will strengthen every aspect of our plan, and will turbo-charge the ability of our law enforcement agencies to track the gangs and bring them down, working with our partners overseas, and using state-of-the-art technology and equipment," said UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. The Labour Party minister accused the previous Conservative Party government of allowing small boat smuggling gangs to embed their criminal trade across the English Channel, putting lives at risk with dangerous migrant crossings. 'They must not be allowed to get away with this vile crime. That is why this government has developed a serious and comprehensive plan to dismantle their business model, from disrupting their supply chains across the European continent to clamping down on their illegal working operations here in the UK," said Cooper. The agency reported that in 2024-25, it achieved 351 NCA-led disruptions of organised immigration crime networks and activity – its highest level on record – and a 40 per cent increase on the previous financial year. Last week, it announced the agency's biggest people-smuggling raid and seizure of boat engines in Bulgaria. The added investment is expected to build on this to arrest and prosecute major smuggling gang leaders and the seizure of more small boats and engines. The investment comes as the latest statistics revealed more than 25,000 migrants made dangerous small boat crossings to enter the UK illegally last month, marking a new record for July. The government also plans a clampdown on student visas to stop migrants using the study route as a way to enter the UK legally and later claim asylum. It will see UK universities face stricter rules around course completion rates to maintain their ability to sponsor visas for foreign students, who typically pay higher fees than domestic students. Two drug peddlers from Assam arrested in Meghalaya, 50 g of heroin seized
Jowai (Meghalaya), Aug 4 (PTI) Two drug peddlers were arrested in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district on Monday, and over 50 grams of heroin was seized from their possession, police said. The two hailed from Darrang district in neighbouring Assam. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Meghalaya and district police conducted a naka operation under the jurisdiction of Jowai Police Station in the early hours of Monday and apprehended the suspects. They were travelling from Silchar in Assam to the Meghalaya capital Shillong in a bus which was stopped by the authorities around 4 am. During a search, two soap cases containing heroin were recovered from one person, while three more such soap cases were found in possession of the other. The contraband, concealed in undergarments and pockets, tested positive for heroin and weighed a total of 52.02 grams, the police officer said. A case has been registered at Jowai Police Station under the NDPS Act. Police said further investigation is on to trace the supply network and identify other operatives involved in the narcotic drug trade. Man falls off train, loses leg in mobile phone theft incident; minor detained
Thane, Aug 4 (PTI) A 26-year-old man fell off a moving train and lost his left leg during a mobile phone theft incident, following which a minor, who allegedly attacked the victim even as he lay bleeding, was detained, a railway police official said on Monday. The incident took place around 7am on Sunday between Shahad and Ambivali stations in Thane district when Gaurch Ramdas Nikam, a farmer from Nashik, was travelling on board the Tapovan Express, the Kalyan railway police station official said. 'The 16-year-old accused, who was standing by the tracks, hit Nikam on his hand while the train was moving. It caused Nikam to lose his balance and fall off the train. His left leg was severed after it came under the wheels of the train," he said. Elaborating on the horrific attack, the official said the accused continued to hit Nikam with a stick as he lay bleeding on the tracks before escaping with the victim's phone worth Rs 20,000. Emergency assistance arrived at the site after police was alerted by commuters and railway staff, the official said. 'Nikam was immediately shifted to a hospital. Doctors have said he is out of danger but will require long-term medical care and rehabilitation due to the loss of his left leg. The accused was detained after a case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions," the police official informed. A probe is underway to find out if the detained minor is involved in more such cases, he said. According to officials, the modus operandi is the one used by the 'phatka" gang in many parts of the Mumbai suburban rail network. It involves accused waiting near the tracks and attacking passengers on the footboard or near the door with sticks, resulting in mobile phones in their hands falling to the ground. However, there have been cases in which the impact of the unexpected and sudden attack has caused passengers to fall off moving trains, they added.
