Paddy Pimblett comes off worse in confrontation with Ilia Topuria
Paddy Pimblett confronted new UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria in the cage after his stunning first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317
Paddy Pimblett was shoved by Ilia Topuria after staking his claim for the first shot at the new UFC lightweight champion.
After his swift defeat of Charles Oliveira in the first round of the UFC 317 main event, Topuria hadn't even had a chance to catch his breath when Pimblett bounded into the octagon to confront him. With adrenaline running high, Pimblett acknowledged Topuria's victory by saying, "Well done, lad, well done, that was a heavy knockout. I give you that, respect, but you will never knock me out."
The new two-weight world champion Topuria shot back, calling Pimblett a "p****y" as Pimblett insisted he couldn't replicate his performance against Oliveira on him. Topuria fired back at the challenging Brit: "Watch what is going to happen with you," adding "I'm going to take your head out. I'm going to submit you, you little p*****. I'm going to put my balls on your forehead, you p****." A push from Topuria subsequently ended the heated showdown as security guards split up the pair.
Later, Dana White, the UFC's head honcho, expressed regret over Pimblett's encroachment into the cage. Showing his disapproval, White said, "I don't know who the hell let [Paddy] in there. That should've never happened," Despite the drama, White remained non-committal about awarding Pimblett a shot at the title, given that the Brit sits at No.8 in the rankings.
Arman Tsarukyan, ranked the No.1 contender, used social media to suggest that the new champion is avoiding him. "It was never supposed to be Charles," he posted. "I can finish Ilia, simple as that, and he knows it too. That's why he's avoiding the real #1 contender."
Before Pimblett's entrance, Topuria discussed his swift victory over Oliveira. "I already said it, I represent the new generation of mixed martial arts," he stated. "This is the next level of the game. This is what I represent. I did exactly what we had planned. Boom, his lights were out."
He then turned his focus to Pimblett, saying, "We have some unsavoury characters in this arena. There's a blonde woman and someone whose back hurts when it's time to deliver. Whoever is ready for me, I'm here. Listen, I don't think Paddy will accept it. But if he believes he's ready... bring that blonde woman here."
Pimblett and Topuria's rivalry began three years ago when Pimblett made provocative comments about Topuria's homeland, Georgia, before throwing a hand sanitiser bottle at his fellow fighter.

Wimbledon Order of Play as Raducanu and Boulter begin their efforts at SW19
Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter lead the home charge on the first day of Wimbledon as defending men's champion Carlos Alcaraz begins the tournament on Centre Court Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter are both in action on Day One of Wimbledon as the championship begins on one of the hottest days of the year. Two British females are on the show courts with Raducanu, who admitted recently she wanted to move on from her 2021 US Open success, is last up on Court One when she takes on Mimi Xu from Wales. Raducanu is aiming to make a run in a Grand Slam once again. Boulter meanwhile plays on Centre Court, which she has done in the past, when she faces Spaniard Paula Badosa. She is the ninth seed and it will take a stellar effort from the home favourite, who has twice reached the third round at SW19, to see off Badosa Boulter will play on Centre Court after, as is tradition, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz comes out to play first up. He will face Italian Fabio Fognini as the recently crowned French Open champion goes after a third straight title at Wimbledon. Alcaraz has been linked romantically with Raducanu away from the court and the young Brit was quizzed on those rumours before the tournament but, with a large smile, insisted they were just friends. Another Brit to keep an eye out for is Jacob Fearnley - he will also play on Court One against Joao Fonseca and is up before Raducanu, but after women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka has begun her tournament. There was a record number of Brits in the draw for this year's Wimbledon and those in attendance will be able to watch a number of them on the outside courts. Cameron Norrie, who made the semi-finals here back in 2022, is up against Roberto Bautista Agut on Court 18 with his match on just after midday. Two home favourites begin their efforts at 11am with Sonay Kartal out on Court 3 against Jelena Ostapenko. Over on Court 16 and Oliver Crawford will take on Mattia Bellucci. The American will face Elena-Gabriela Ruse whilst men's fifth seed Taylor Fritz, who has impressed in the lead up to Wimbledon, faces Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Two-time finalist Ons Jabeur, who has fallen down the rankings, begins her bid to finally land a Grand Slam when she faces Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria.

Attention has already turned to who the 28-year-old will fight in his maiden defence of the 155lbs throne, which he'll no doubt be hoping will take place in his adopted homeland of Spain. Paddy Pimblett Given their long-standing beef, which stemmed from social media comments Pimblett made about Georgians, this fight is an absolute no-brainer. The pair are currently the two biggest names in the stacked division, so pitting them together, especially when they're both in red-hot form, makes sense. The build-up to this one would be box office, especially after their blockbuster post-fight face-off and near-brawl. UFC supremo Dana White has, however, already revealed he's not keen on pitting the pair against one another next. But the demand for this fight, the biggest the promotion can make at the moment in time, is white hot. Islam Makhachev Watch jacked Ilia Topuria complete epic UFC 317 body transformation after ditching crash diet to lose over 40lbs Topuria, of course, moved up from featherweight in February to pursue a champion-versus-champion with pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev. Makhchev, as we all know, ended up begrudgingly vacating the 155lbs belt to pursue welterweight gold once former training partner Belal Muhammad lost the belt to Jack Della Maddalena. The Dagestani destroyer is understood to harbour ambitions of reclaiming the belt he won in October 2022. It would make for a fantastic storyline if Makhachev were to win gold at 170lbs and drop back down to 155lbs to try to reclaim what was once his in a super-fight fans are still pining for. 8 Arman Tsarukyan The Armenian, of course, was set to challenge Makhachev for the belt in January before a freak back injury less than 48 hours before fight night scuppered the bout. Tsarukyan, who is on a four-fight win streak, weighed in as the backup fighter for the main event. He did the UFC brass a favour by agreeing to defend the BMF belt against Holloway at UFC 300 following back-to-back wins of Rafael Fiziev and Dustin Poirier. The promotion threw a boatload of cash at Gaethje in order to jazz up their tri-centennial card and his decision to take the fight cost him dearly. Doing him a solid and giving him a third crack at undisputed lightweight gold at Topuria is the least the UFC could do. 8 Justin Gaethje is holding out for a tite shot and will retire if he doesn't get one Credit: GETTY Max Holloway Although Topuria became the first man to crack Holloway's chin in his first and final featherweight title defence, there is still some interest in a rematch between the pair. Holloway cut a drained figure in their fight as he was returning to the weight class having filled out his frame to face Gaethje in their BMF bout at UFC 300. The weight cut could've played a role in his chin finally giving out, although Topuria does carry insane power in both hands. Either way, should Holloway win his trilogy fight with Poirier next month in emphatic fashion, the appetite for a rematch will likely be there.
