Can you see the Northern Lights tonight? The latest forecast
The Northern Lights might light up the skies across parts of Britain for a second night after experts issued a "red alert".
The app Aurorawatch, which is run by Space and Planetary Physics group at Lancaster University's Department of Physics, issued the alert meaning auroras are likely tonight, while the Met Office has forecast that auroras will continue, confined to more northerly areas.
People in northern latitudes might be able to see northern lights or aurora, as particles from the sun hit the Earth, the Met Office said: 'The solar winds remain very strong and turbulent before waning Monday night into Tuesday.'
The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, make the sky glow green and purple and are typically visible from areas in the northern parts of the British Isles
The Northern Lights phenomenon occurs when particles from the Sun (known as solar wind) strike particles in our atmosphere.

They're known as 'aurora' (meaning 'dawn') because the glow they cause resembles the morning light.
NASA says: 'When energetic particles from space collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they can cause the colourful glow that we call auroras.'
This week's Northern Lights were caused by an eruption on the Sun known as a 'coronal mass ejection', which hurls particles into Space from the Sun.
The Met Office said: 'Earth is under the influence of a coronal mass ejection that arrived during the UTC morning of 01 Jun and which saw significant enhancements to the auroral oval.'
Coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, are large clouds of solar plasma and magnetic fields released into space after a solar eruption.
Stretching over millions of miles, they cause the dazzling light display when they hit Earth's atmosphere.
The Northern Lights could once again sparkle in the sky over Britain on Tuesday, but it's likely to be confined to areas such as Scotland, according to the Met Office.
The Met Office says: 'The activity may last during the early hours of Monday as the solar winds remain very strong and turbulent before waning Monday night into Tuesday.
There's a chance of seeing the #aurora tonight, possibly as far south as the Midland and Wales ✨Most likely though, the #northernlights will be visible for Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland, where clear skies allow 👇 pic.twitter.com/KMbsFa4aAB
— Met Office (@metoffice) June 1, 2025
'While aurora sightings are possible down to central parts of the UK and similar latitudes at first, they will become progressively confined to northern Ireland and Scotland. Short hours of darkness may limit any viewing though.'
The best time and place to view the Northern Lights are in areas away from light pollution (ie outside of urban areas) and facing north.
North-facing coasts produce some of the best locations to view the northern lights.
The Met Office says that the best time to view is when the sky is completely dark and clear of any clouds.
Your mobile phone's camera is probably able to 'see' the northern lights far better than you - so even if they are faint for you, you might capture spectacular shots, especially using 'night mode'.
Modern mobile phone cameras have excellent low-light sensitivity (due to demand for photos in bars and clubs).
On iPhone, Night Mode should activate automatically in low-light conditions (you'll see a yellow icon on screen).

In Photos: Sharpest-Ever Views Of The Sun's Surface Reveal ‘Stripes'
Scientists using the world's biggest solar telescope in Hawaii have captured the sharpest-ever view of the sun's surface. In doing so, they've identified super-fine 'stripes' and 'magnetic curtains' on the sun for the first time, which could help in understanding how the sun behaves — and how its energetic events can threaten Earth. It comes in the wake of the same telescope's spectacular image of a planet-sized cluster of sunspots covering 241 million square miles of the sun's surface, which was published in April. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope is the world's largest solar telescope, situated atop the 10,000-foot-tall Haleakalā volcano in Hawaii. A 13-foot/four-meter solar ground-based telescope, it's designed to help solar physicists investigate the physics of the sun and how it drives space weather. The ultra-fine magnetic 'stripes' observed by the DKIST are bright and dark striations that appear to be rippling across the sun. The incredible detail reveals curtain-like magnetic fields and a new layer of complexity in the sun's magnetic structure. 'We investigate the fine-scale structure of the solar surface for the first time with an unprecedented spatial resolution of just about 20 kilometers or the length of Manhattan Island,' said Dr. David Kuridze, the lead author of the study, published today in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, and a scientist at the National Solar Observatory. 'These striations are the fingerprints of fine-scale magnetic field variations.' What causes the 'stripes' are magnetic fluctuations, which only DKIST's huge 4-meter mirror can detect. 'Magnetism is a fundamental phenomenon in the universe, and similar magnetically induced stripes have also been observed in more distant astrophysical objects, such as molecular clouds,' said Dr. Han Uitenbroek, co-author of the study and an NSO scientist. A deeper understanding of how magnetism works on the sun is essential if astronomers are to understand the origin of solar flares, eruptions and coronal mass ejections — powerful events that charge up the solar wind and can cause geomagnetic storms around Earth. Approximately 93 million miles from Earth, the sun is a middle-aged star, having existed for approximately five billion years. It burns around five million tons of hydrogen fuel every second. 'This is just one of many firsts for the Inouye, demonstrating how it continues to push the frontier of solar research,' said Dr. David Boboltz, NSO Associate Director for the DKIST. 'It also underscores Inouye's vital role in understanding the small-scale physics that drive space weather events that impact our increasingly technological society here on Earth.' DKIST's stunning 'first light' images showed a close-up view of the sun's surface, revealing turbulent 'boiling' plasma across the entire star. The cell-like structures are violent motions that transport heat from the inside of the sun to its surface. Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

Sun sign former Fever forward amid poor start to 2025 WNBA season
The post Sun sign former Fever forward amid poor start to 2025 WNBA season appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Connecticut Sun have gotten off to a poor start to the 2025 WNBA season with a record of 1-6. They are currently tied with the Dallas Wings for the worst record in the league. During their most recent loss to the New York Liberty, Marina Mabrey didn't exactly make a good kind of WNBA history, finishing with the lowest +/- in league history. Amid the early struggles, the Sun made a recent roster move with the signing of free agent Jaelyn Brown, the team announced this week. Advertisement The signing of Jaelyn Brown brings the current Sun roster to 13 players. In a corresponding move, the Sun cut second-year wing Robyn Parks who had made the team out of training camp. While contract details were not immediately available, it's likely that Brown's contract with the Sun is a hardship contract. The Sun will need to cut back down to 12 players once they are able to. Veteran point guard Lindsay Allen is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury, while Leïla Lacan will join the team at a later date in the season following her participation in Eurobasket later this month. Lacan will be making her WNBA debut after being selected by the Sun with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Brown joins the Sun following one season of experience in the WNBA. She signed with the Dallas Wings after going undrafted in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and made the team's 2024 regular season roster. Brown was acquired by the Indiana Fever this past offseason as part of the massive four-team trade that landed Satou Sabally with the Phoenix Mercury. Brown was one of the Fever's final roster cuts in training camp before the start of the regular season. During her rookie season with the Wings last year, she appeared in 14 games, including one start, at a little over ten minutes per game. She averaged 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds with splits of 48.4 percent shooting from the field, 50 percent shooting from the three-point line and 33.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Her best game statistically was the final game of the regular season against the Las Vegas Aces. She finished with a career-best 15 points, three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot in a little over 20 minutes. She shot 6-of-9 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.
