The Cleveland Browns have a major quarterback competition brewing. With five quarterbacks on the roster and four of them vying for the Week 1 starting job, the upcoming preseason and training camp period will be full of storylines to watch.
At this point, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett appear to be the top two contenders for the season opening starting job. However, the two rookies, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, are going to put up a fight.

Photo byWhile training camp is still over a month away, the Browns' fan base cannot stop talking about the competition. Many would like to see Sanders get playing time this season and he has been one of the top talking points throughout the league.

That being said, a new update on the competition has been given by Cleveland offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
Rees believes that any of the quarterbacks the roster could win the job. He's going to give each of them every chance to prove that they deserve it.
"You can see them all winning the job, I think, right?" Rees said. "And so in terms of the competition, we're so early in the process. We're so early in evaluating that. Yeah, I think, you know, we have a good group of guys that continue to push one another, and by the time September rolls around, we'll be ready to go."
He continued on, talking about his plan with the quarterback room. Rees also gave a strong hint that Watson is not part of the starting conversation right now.

"It's going to be fluid," Rees said. "We're going to continue to work with all the guys we have. We're going to develop all four of them and, you know, we're going to push the reps. We're going to find ways to be creative to make sure that they all have opportunities to develop and put their best foot forward. And, you know, when the time comes, we'll continue to push guys forward as they are."
Regardless of who wins the Week 1 starting job, there is likely going to be change throughout the year. Unless the Browns come out and are a surprising playoff contender, they will want to get a look at their young guys.
Cleveland fans should buckle up for what could be a season full of change at quarterback.

Mayfield is entering the second year of a three-year, $100 million contract that he signed ahead of the 2024 season. Whenever he gets a likely extension with the Bucs, the value may be gone, but the price on a franchise quarterback is hard to have an exact number on it. He has shown he can be the guy for the Bucs, and with the team already building for the future with picks like Jalen McMillan and Emeka Egbuka at wide receiver, they have a long-term plan for him.

The Browns announced linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will not play in 2025 after suffering a neck injury midway through the 2024 season. But the franchise will still have him around during the coming season, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz told reporters this week. 'JOK was on his way to [an] All-Pro season last year,' Schwartz said on Wednesday, via Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal. 'He had really reached that level. We had talked this time last year about the biggest jump between being a starter and then being a Pro Bowl player. There's even a bigger jump to being an All-Pro player. 'It's disappointing to lose a player like that, but we support JOK and everything that he does,' Schwartz added. 'He'll still have a big impact on our team this year. It's not going to be playing, but he'll still have a big presence.' Owusu-Koramoah, a second-round pick in 2021, was a Pro Bowler in 2023 after registering 101 total tackles with 20 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and two interceptions. He recorded 61 total tackles with 10 for loss, 3.0 sacks, and an interception in eight games last season before suffering his injury.

Things have not gone well for the 29-year-old since being traded to the Browns. Originally viewed as the answer to the team's long-term quarterback question, Watson has had three straight bad years. In 2022, he played in just six games for the Browns, completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,102 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He backed that up in 2023 with six games played, a 61.4 percent completion rate, 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. However, he completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in seven games before the season-ending Achilles tear. Watson may be unlikely to play for Cleveland again, but he's taking his recovery in stride and simply focusing on what he can control. No one knows what the future has in store. He's under contract with the Browns for big money for both the 2025 and 2026 seasons before becoming a free agent.
