Miami Hurricanes Key to the Season
Chill on all of the penalties. It would be nice if the Hurricane defense forced more fumbles - it only came up with four last year - but overall, slowing down a little bit on the flags will matter a bit more.Miami was 120th in the nation in penalty yards, getting hit for 67.5 every time out. The team was able to overcome its sins, for the most part, but the nine penalties for 110 yards made the Cal game more of a fight than it should've been. The nine flags for 90 yards were a killer in the loss to Syracuse.
Miami Hurricanes Key Player
Raul Aguirre, LB Jr.Francisco Mauigoa tackled everything. He made 238 stops, 13 sacks, and 35 tackles for loss over the last three seasons - he'll be missed. The 230-pound Aguirre can work in any linebacking spot, but he should be a thumper on the inside. He might not be Mauigoa, but the defense needs him to make a whole lot of plays.
Miami Hurricanes Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Carson Beck, QB Sr.There were too many interceptions, too many empty drives, and too many misfires, but he still got Georgia to the SEC Championship game and played a half before injuring his elbow. The 2023 version hit 72% of his passes for over 3,900 yards with 24 touchdowns and just six picks. If that Carson Beck shows up, look out. There might be a lot going on with him, but if he can grip-and-rip, he's got the talent to take Miami where Cam Ward didn't.Top Transfer Out: Isaiah Horton, WR Jr.He was just coming into his own after a 56-catch season with five touchdowns, and he would've been a good part of the Miami receiving corps, but he should blow up as more of a downfield threat in the Alabama attack.
Miami Hurricanes Key Game
Notre Dame, Aug. 31You didn't make the College Football Playoff, Miami? You want to be a true player right away? Beating Notre Dame in the season opener would be an even bigger deal than rolling Florida 41-17 to kick off 2024.- 2025 Miami Schedule Breakdown

Miami Hurricanes 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
There are way too many moving parts to assume Miami can get to 10-2 like it did in the 2024 regular season, but there are also too many good pieces to underestimate how good this campaign might be.There's no Clemson to deal with, and not playing Georgia Tech is probably a plus, but that shouldn't matter. If this is the team it's supposed to be with all of this talent, it's better than just about everyone on the slate.
Notre Dame might be the exception, but that's in Miami in late August. Florida will be nasty, but that's a home date, too. If Florida State is back to form, the road game will be a fight, and maybe, just maybe, going to SMU will be dangerous. There will be misfires. Going to Virginia Tech and Pitt in late November is scary, and if Carson Beck isn't all that he can and should be, uh oh.
So let's set the win total bar a tad too low, but with the understanding that an ACC Championship and top four CFP seed should both be on the table.Set The Miami Hurricanes Win Total At … 8.5Likely Wins: Bethune-Cookman, Stanford, USF50/50 Games: Florida, at Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame, NC State, at Pitt, at SMU, Syracuse, at Virginia TechLikely Losses: No projected sure-thing losses2025 Miami PreviewMiami Offense BreakdownMiami Defense Breakdown

Notre Dame athletic director supports 16-team playoff with 11 at-large teams

The Big Ten's College Football Playoff proposal isn't finding many allies outside the conference. Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua told the Athletic in an interview published Tuesday that he's also against the conference's idea for the Big Ten and the SEC to get more automatic bids to a 16-team playoff than any other conference. Bevacqua said that he's in favor of the 5+11 format, where the top five conference champions and 11 at-large teams would fill out the playoff field if it expands to 16 teams. 'I happen to think that there should be automatic qualifiers for the Power 4 conference champions, and there should an automatic qualifier for the highest-rated G5 champion.' Bevacqua said. 'But then, whether it's 12, 14, or 16 (teams), I think you have to earn it on the field. And those should be at-large berths. 'I think that's the best way, the most repeatable way, to get the very best teams to compete for a national championship year-in and year-out. And I think most people agree with that. Both the decision makers, the general public, football fans, I think that's what people want to see.' The Big Ten's idea includes both it and the SEC getting four teams into the playoff every year while the ACC and Big 12 get two. The top group of five conference champion would also get into the playoff while the final three spots would be filled by at-large teams. It's not much of a surprise that Notre Dame would be against the Big Ten's idea; it has a much easier path to the playoff with 11 at-large berths instead of three because the Fighting Irish aren't in a conference. But Bevacqua's sentiment is still important given the sway that Notre Dame has in playoff discussions. The school has a seat at the table along with conference commissioners as the playoff's future format is discussed. The SEC and its coaches aren't keen on the Big Ten's idea and the Big 12 and ACC are staunchly against it. Yet, so far, the Big Ten and commissioner Tony Petitti are steadfast in their support for their idea. And that disagreement could ultimately delay expansion. Since there's no agreement on a future format for the playoff, it could stay at 12 past the 2025 season if there isn't a consensus regarding how it should look if it expands to 16. Petitti even admitted as much to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger last week. And given that the Big Ten's idea isn't getting much support, it's hard to see a 16-team playoff in 2026 without the conference — or the rest of college football — changing its mind.

Paul Finebaum shares what Oklahoma has to do to secure Brent Venables' future

The Oklahoma Sooners report for fall camp on Wednesday to further their preparations for the 2025 college football season. On paper, the Sooners look like an improved team, but there are certainly questions that will need to be answered during fall camp to solidify several spots. Even though the Sooners are an improved team, Oklahoma will face one of the more difficult schedules in the SEC. How Oklahoma manages the schedule in 2025 could determine a lot about the future of the OU Football program. On 'The Paul Finebaum Show,' SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum discussed what it would take for Brent Venables to feel comfortable coming out of the 2025 season. Finebaum believes Oklahoma has to start the season 5-0, going into the Red River Showdown with the Texas Longhorns. The SEC Network/ESPN college football analyst believes OU loses to Texas and will need to go 4-2 down the stretch for Venables to stick around Norman for 2026. 'If they can win all but maybe two of those games, I think that Brent Venables may have a great record and will likely be around for a while,' Finebaum said. 'Otherwise, I think you know the answer to the question.' A 9-3 season would put Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff discussion. But it would depend on who the three losses were to. If Oklahoma lost to Texas, Alabama, and LSU, they'd have a pretty strong case for inclusion in the College Football Playoff, even with three losses. If one of those losses were to Missouri, Ole Miss, Tennessee, or South Carolina, though difficult matchups, the playoff committee may not be as forgiving. Venables' buy-out is $34.9 million following the 2025 season. Which likely means an 8-4 record or better in the 2025 season keeps him around for another year. If the Sooners go 7-5 or worse, the administration may be having some tough conversations. How tough is Auburn football's 2025 schedule compared to the rest of the SEC?

Is Auburn's schedule easy to navigate? Hugh Freeze needs to lead Auburn to a winning campaign in 2025 in order to release the pressure surrounding his job security, and one CBS Sports college football expert feels this year's schedule will give Freeze the break he desperately needs. In his ranking of SEC's toughest schedules, Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports places Auburn's slate in the lower tier at No. 11. Sure, any fan base would love to have the right to brag about how tough their schedule is any given season, but, in Auburn's case, having a softer schedule could lead to higher morale surrounding the program and for Freeze to cool off the "hot seat" chatter. Marcello points out that Auburn's schedule will always be considered challenging thanks to Alabama and Georgia being their top rivals. However, outside of those two games, Auburn's schedule lines up well for a program desperately needing to rise in college football playoff talk. Auburn's schedule is never easy with rivals Alabama and Georgia permanently in the rotation, but both come to Auburn this season, and with an abundance of talent returning at receiver and a former blue-chip prospect at quarterback in Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold , this is the year for Hugh Freeze to challenge for 10 wins. The Tigers open the season on a Friday at Baylor . Back-to-back road rips to Oklahoma and Texas close September. Only two road games remain on the docket in October and November (at Arkansas and Vanderbilt). As always, the season will defined by Georgia (Oct. 11) and Alabama (Nov. 29). If Freeze is ever going to win at Auburn, it's against this schedule. Auburn football has lost seven games in each of the last four seasons and is aiming to lift the weight off its shoulders in 2025. The Tigers held leads in games with California, Oklahoma, and Missouri, but caught bad breaks late and ultimately lost, which turned the season around for the worse. This season, Auburn will face just two teams that won at least 10 games last season, and will face eight teams that won eight or fewer games. An easier schedule, mixed in with incredible talent, could propel Auburn into College Football Playoff consideration by season's end. According to Marcello, Vanderbilt has the toughest schedule this season, with Missouri boasting the easiest among SEC teams.
