‘Combat excellence' against India: Senate specifically commends PAF for its ‘exceptional professionalism'
ISLAMABAD: The Upper House of the Parliament has specifically commended the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) for its 'exceptional professionalism and combat excellence' against India.
'The Senate of Pakistan – specifically commends the exceptional professionalism and combat excellence of the Pakistan Air Force for effectively repelling aggression and decisively shattering the myth of the enemy's military prowess – thereby restoring strategic balance, crucial redline and the strengthening of confidence in Pakistan's defence capabilities, which have been widely acknowledged and praised,' read a resolution unanimously passed by the Senate in its session, presided over by Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, on Thursday.
The armed forces of Pakistan - Army, Air Force, and Navy - have once again demonstrated unwavering resolve, unparalleled, professionalism, and steadfast dedication in the successful execution of Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, launched in response to unprovoked, and unjustified Indian aggression, read the resolution moved by Law Minister Azam Tarar.
'This measured and resolute operation reaffirmed Pakistan's sovereignty and safeguarded the territorial integrity of the motherland. It was carried out with exceptional restraint and maturity reflecting the conduct of a responsible nuclear state,' the document read.
The Senate, through its resolution, congratulated the people of Pakistan for 'rising above all political, ethnic, and ideological, divides and differences, and demonstrating unwavering unity in support of national leadership across the political spectrum and speaking with one voice and one purpose to defend the people, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and dignity of Pakistan.'
The House strongly condemned what it described were brutal and unprovoked Indian attacks on innocent civilians, including women, children and the mosques.
The Senate extended 'heartfelt gratitude to Pakistan's brotherly and friendly countries for their unwavering and principled support during this critical time.'
The legislature stressed the critical importance of strict adherence to the Indus Water Treaty and reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering resolve to protect its 'rightful share of water as a fundamental component of national security, international agreements, economic stability, and sovereignty.'
The House reminded India that any unilateral and illegal holding in abeyance or other illegal violations of the Indus Water Treaty, including attempts to divert or obstruct Pakistan's water by any means, whatsoever, constitutes a serious breach of international humanitarian law, and amounts not only to a war crime, but also a crime against humanity, with grave, regional, and global repercussions. The Senate confirmed that Pakistan will 'treat any such misadventure by India as an act of war.'
Speaking at the session, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, Pakistan wants peace in the region but will not accept any hegemonic designs and breach of its sovereignty.
The PAF shot down six Indian fighter jets without losing any of its fighter jets, he said.
'Pakistan never requested anyone for ceasefire- It is a great success of Pakistan that the international community has not believed India's narrative,' Dar said.
Leader of the Opposition in Senate Shibli Faraz said Pakistan has set new standards of excellence in combat, air warfare in particular.
Sherry Rehman said the armed forces of Pakistan made a new history by establishing new conventional deterrence against India.
The House was adjourned till today (Friday).

UN peacekeepers say troops attacked by individuals in south Lebanon
BEIRUT: United Nations peacekeepers said rock-throwing individuals confronted them during a patrol on Tuesday in south Lebanon, calling repeated targeting of their troops 'unacceptable'. The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed since 1978 to separate Lebanon and Israel, sits on a five-member committee to supervise the ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah. In a statement, UNIFIL said peacekeepers conducting 'a planned patrol' coordinated with the Lebanese army were 'confronted by a group of individuals in civilian clothing in the vicinity of Hallusiyat al-Tahta, in southern Lebanon'. 'The group attempted to obstruct the patrol using aggressive means, including throwing stones at the peacekeepers,' the statement read, adding that 'one peacekeeper was struck' but no injuries were reported. The situation was defused when the Lebanese army intervened, allowing the peacekeeping force to continue its patrol. 'It is unacceptable that UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to be targeted,' the statement added. UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti told AFP a Finnish soldier was slapped during the confrontation. Israeli strike on south Lebanon kills one: ministry A witness, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said an altercation ensued between locals and the Lebanese army, who were searching for the man who slapped the peacekeeper. One man opposing the army was injured and hospitalised, the witness said. In a statement, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he 'strongly condemns the repeated attacks' on UNIFIL forces and called for the attackers to be stopped and held accountable. After a meeting with French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned 'the occasional attacks on UNIFIL patrols', calling them 'unjustified and unacceptable'. There have been several confrontations between people in south Lebanon, where Hezbollah holds sway, and UN peacekeepers in recent weeks. Confrontations are typically defused by the Lebanese army and rarely escalate. In December 2022, an Irish peacekeeper was killed in a shooting at a UN armoured vehicle in the south. Hezbollah surrendered a man accused of the crime, but he was released around a year later. The November ceasefire agreement, which sought to end over a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, states that only Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers may be deployed in the country's south. Israel is supposed to have fully withdrawn its troops from Lebanon according to the deal, but has remained in five positions it deems strategic and has repeatedly bombed the country.

According to official budget documents, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is set to receive Rs722.48 billion, reflecting the government's continued emphasis on poverty alleviation. An additional Rs10.23 billion is proposed for the Poverty Alleviation Division, while Rs14.20 billion has been set aside for Pakistan Baitul Mal. The Ministry of Interior and its subordinate departments will receive Rs343.89 billion, including Rs21.26 billion for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and Rs274.15 billion for the Combined Civil Armed Forces. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is set to get Rs19.12 billion, while Rs1.05 billion has been earmarked for NACTA. Defence budget hiked by 20.2% to Rs2,550b

The defence budget has been hiked by over 20% as Rs2,550 billion has been set aside in the budget 2025-26, which will be spent on the operations, equipment, and other needs of the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, and related defence institutions. For civil administration expenses, Rs971 billion has been earmarked, which includes operational expenses of federal ministries, departments, and the civil bureaucracy. As per the budget document, this amount is increasing every year, adding to the government's financial woes. These subsidies will be provided to low-income consumers, agricultural tube-wells, and the industrial sector to facilitate them. For grants, Rs1,928 billion has been allocated, which will be distributed among the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the merged districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The aim is to promote development, welfare projects, and financial stability in these regions.
