Brazil legend Marta hopes to win another Copa America Femenina after coming out of retirement
Turns out, the six-time world player of the year wasn't quite finished.
The 39-year-old forward has come out of retirement and is playing at the Copa América Femenina in Ecuador. The Brazilians have won eight titles in the premier women's tournament for South America.
The Copa América is among three big continental women's tournaments this summer, along with the European Championship and the Africa Cup of Nations.
Even though Marta had stepped away from the national team, Brazil coach Arthur Elias pulled her back in late May for a pair of friendly matches against Japan. Marta started in another Copa América tune-up match against France in late June.

Marta said she's just living in the moment.
'My work doesn't change, the feeling doesn't change, the pride doesn't change, the desire to help the team doesn't change, and it never will, regardless of whether I'm playing or not. But the way I'm facing things, not only here in the team, but I think in my day-to-day life, is a different way,' she said in a news conference when she was brought back.
'I'm aware that I don't have many years left to play, so the little I have, I want to make the most of it.'
Before last year's Paris Games, Marta said she would be retiring from the national team after the Olympics to make way for the next generation of players. The Brazilians went on to win the silver medal after a 1-0 loss to the United States in the final.

But she continued to play for her club team, Orlando Pride, in the National Women's Soccer League. Last season, she scored 11 goals with the Pride, which won the NWSL title.
She re-signed with the team through 2026 earlier this year.
Overall, Marta's national team career has spanned more than 20 years. She's played in 204 games for Brazil, scoring 119 goals.
She's played in six World Cups and six Olympics. Brazil's best finish at the World Cup was runner-up in 2007.

The nation has reached the Olympic final three times, including in Paris, but a gold medal has remained out of reach.
Marta started in Brazil's Copa América opener, a 2-0 victory over Venezuela, then came off the bench in a 6-0 win over Bolivia. Next up is a match against Paraguay on Tuesday.
She has said she'll accept any role that Elias gives her, realising that Brazil has a host of talented young players, including 25-year-old Kerolin, who plays professionally for Manchester City, and 22-year-old Luany, who plays for Atlético Madrid.
But there's also an elephant in the room: The Women's World Cup is coming to Marta's home country in 2027.
Previously, Marta said she didn't see herself playing in it — she'd be 41 — but she hasn't exactly ruled out the possibility either.

'The coach has always made it very clear that he'll be calling whoever is best at the moment, regardless of age. And I think that the way he's doing it is the most correct way,' she said.
'There's no point in coming here and saying, `I'll be playing in the World Cup in two years.' It will depend on what happens in my day-to-day life, and that's why I'm thinking this way today and living one day at a time.'
She may also have another plan for her future.
'I still have a very strong desire to be a mother. So, maybe I'll wake up one day and decide to call my doctor and see if it's still possible,' she said in a recent interview with Globo's Esporte Espetacular.

'Shut up, lower your head & do as we say': Lovlina Borgohain accuses BFI official of ‘humiliation' - here' what happened
Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain has accused Boxing Federation of India's (BFI) executive director and interim committee member Col Arun Malik (Retd) for raising his voice against her and 'speaking aggressively' in a meeting that had boxing coach Pranamika Boro, respected individuals from Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and other BFI members. According to a TOI report, the incident took place during a TOPs meeting which was held virtually on July 8. Describing her experience one of the worst in her life, Borgohain stated she was 'deeply hurt, disheartened and also questioned the respect and dignity women athletes receive. Borgohain, who is a reigning middleweight world champion and a recipient of Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award, had already sent a complaint letter to sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Sports Authority of India director general Hari Ranjan Rao, TOPS division, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and BFI. In her letter, Borgohain wrote, "I write this letter not just as an athlete, but as a woman who has spent years carrying the hopes of a nation in the boxing ring — with pride, pain and perseverance. What happened during a recent official meeting with the BFI and the TOPS on July 8, 2024, at 12pm has left me deeply hurt, disheartened. "In the presence of respected individuals from TOPS, boxing coach Pranamika Boro, (other) BFI members, Mr Arun Malik, an official of BFI, humiliated me in a way no athlete should ever have to endure. He raised his voice at me, spoke in an aggressively demeaning manner, and blatantly told me to 'shut up, lower your head and do as we say'. 'His words were not only disrespectful but also carried an alarming tone of gender-discriminatory and authoritarian dominance — something that no one, especially a woman who has brought honour to the nation, should be subjected to,' the letter further added. 'In a space where I expected professionalism, support and mutual respect, I was made to feel small, unheard, and powerless. It was not just a personal insult — it was an attack on every woman athlete who dreams of standing tall, both in and outside the ring...,' Borgohain, who is part of the Indian contingent for the World Championships in Liverpool, further wrote in her letter. "I request the authorities for a fair and swift inquiry into Malik's conduct during the meeting and necessary disciplinary action if these actions are found to be in violation of acceptable conduct," she concluded.

Not Grand Slam Titles! Novak Djokovic Picks Winning Olympic Gold As Pinnacle Of Career

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic shared that he will forever cherish the final moments of the Paris Olympics 2024 gold medal game. The 24-time Grand Slam champion finally completed his career trophy collection by defeating Spain's Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, ending a 16-year wait for the much-desired medal. Paris 2024 tennis: Novak Djokovic wins Olympic gold after a 16-year wait 'I've watched this video probably a million times," Djokovic told Laureus after viewing a replay of the match's final moments. He added, 'This will remain the pinnacle of my career given the years I waited and worked for it. Heartbreaking losses in the last four Olympic Games I competed in prevented me from reaching this milestone. I will remember this moment forever." Djokovic's performance in Paris was nothing short of sensational. He did not drop a set throughout the tournament and avenged a painful Wimbledon final loss to Alcaraz just weeks earlier. The Olympic gold was Djokovic's only title of the 2024 season, completing his career golden slam. The 38-year-old's victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris 2024 final fulfilled his quest to win every major accolade the sport offers, including all four Grand Slams, the Davis Cup, the ATP Finals, and every Masters event. Tennis at LA 2028 will be hosted at the Tennis Center in Carson, which currently serves as a USTA high-performance training base. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vijay Devarakonda grilled by ED over A23 app; says it is legal gaming platform
HYDERABAD: Actor Vijay Devarakonda, after being questioned for around four hours at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Basheerbagh, defended his promotion of the A23 application, stating it is a registered company. He clarified that there is a clear distinction between gaming and betting applications. Gaming apps, he said, are legal, recognised by the government, and licensed as businesses, while betting apps fall under a different category. Citing examples, he noted that a Google search for top gaming apps shows platforms such as Dream11, My11 Circle, MPL, and A23 — all registered entities that sponsor various Indian sports teams, including cricket, the Olympics, women's cricket, the Indian Premier League (IPL), and kabaddi and volleyball teams. Vijay Devarakonda added that ED officials were seeking clarifications from him, and he provided them with his bank transactions and account details. He also observed that officials appeared unsure why his name had surfaced in the investigation. Earlier, the ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against 29 individuals, including actors and influencers. Recently, officials also questioned Prakash Raj.
