Sabah Journalists welcome digital transformation allocation, urge inclusive implementation and support for stringers

KOTA KINABALU (June 15): The Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) has welcomed the federal government's allocation for digital transformation in the media sector, calling it a timely recognition of journalism's evolving role in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
In a statement on Sunday, SJA President Mariah Doksil said the initiative reflects the government's acknowledgment of the media's vital contribution towards building an informed and democratic society.
'The Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) welcomes the digital transformation allocation. We view it as a significant recognition in shaping an informed and democratic society,' she said.
Mariah stressed that the allocation presents an opportunity for media practitioners to equip themselves with new skills, adapt to modern tools, and enhance storytelling quality in the face of rapid technological advancements.
'In a world increasingly shaped by AI, journalists must be equipped with the right competencies to remain relevant and ethical. We hope that any training or programmes under this allocation will help journalists not only prioritise factual accuracy without AI manipulation, but also retain the human soul, 'ada jiwa' and empathy in journalism,' she added.
She also underscored the need for inclusive implementation of the programme, urging meaningful engagement with state-level media associations.
'Engagement sessions with state-level media associations are essential. Participation from Sabah and Sarawak should not be treated as token or a mere formality. Clear KPIs should be established to measure the programme's impact effectively,' said Mariah.
On the government's move to enhance the welfare of media stringers both local and national through the PERKESO social protection scheme and i-Saraan EPF contributions, SJA expressed its appreciation and called for accessibility and clarity in implementation.
'Local stringers are the backbone of rural coverage, while national stringers provide diverse perspectives from Sabah to the national level. These initiatives are timely and much-needed steps towards safeguarding their social protection and securing their futures. We hope these programmes will be accessible and user-friendly for the intended recipients,' she said.
Mariah also proposed the establishment of a dedicated platform to collect and maintain data on stringers nationwide, aimed at providing more structured and targeted support.
'Among our 115 active SJA members, approximately 20 percent are stringers. A centralised platform would go a long way in ensuring their needs are met and their contributions better recognised,' she added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an allocation of RM30 million to support media organisations in digital transformation initiatives and the adoption of new technologies for content production when officiating the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
He said the allocation aligns with efforts to strengthen the country's media ecosystem and ensure its sustainability.

[UPDATED] Anwar: Revised US tariffs won't impact Malaysia's semiconductor sector

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's semiconductor industry will not be significantly affected by the revised United States tariffs, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the companies impacted were either American firms or ones that would continue to invest and produce in the US. "Many of you brought up anxieties about the tariffs on semiconductors this morning. Before this, we were exempted," he said. "Most of these companies are American companies or companies that will continue its investments and production in America. "As of now, I think there is no effect. It's just that there are few that are excluded from the tariff conditions." He cited the German-based Infineon Technologies, which he previously said could potentially invest RM30 billion in Malaysia, had sufficient demand in Europe. "We are monitoring the situation," Anwar added. The prime minister was speaking during his closing address at the firstBudget 2026 engagement session between the government and nearly 300 stakeholders, here, today. Earlier, Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said that Budget 2026, to be tabled on Oct 10, will focus on enhancing Malaysia's competitive edge in high-value industries such as semiconductors, renewable energy, the Islamic economy, digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI), while also "raising the floor" through inclusive and targeted measures.

Multi-agency push drives workforce upskilling

A COMPREHENSIVE, multi-agency approach is being used to address labour market imbalances, mainly in skills mismatches. Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the rate of skills-related underemployment dropped from 37.3% in 2022 to 35.7% in the first quarter of 2025, which he attributed to coordinated efforts by various ministries and agencies. 'Among the key agencies involved are TalentCorp, Manpower Department, Department of Skills Development, PERKESO and HRD Corp. 'These bodies play critical roles in developing a high-skilled workforce aligned with industry needs,' he said in reply to Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit Buntar), who inquired about steps taken to resolve the skills mismatch in the labour market. To identify industry-critical skills, Abdul Rahman said TalentCorp has published the Malaysia Critical Occupations List since 2015. From 2023, he said the initiative was extended to schools to expose students to future job trends and required skills. He said TalentCorp also conducted studies on artificial intelligence, the digital economy and green technology to assess their impact on Malaysia's workforce. Based on these findings, he said the digital portal and MyMAHIR Future Skills Talent Council (FSTC) were introduced. The FSTC, led by industry players, is responsible for determining training priorities and selecting suitable training centres, he added. 'As of June 2025, 66 training programmes involving 2,336 participants are underway under the FSTC initiative,' he said. Abdul Rahman also highlighted ongoing reforms to Malaysia's national occupational skills standards, with 2,012 active standards currently available and supported by 1,619 accredited training centres nationwide. To support displaced workers, he said the Labour Department has provided reskilling and upskilling courses, with 84,231 individuals trained in 2024 and 48,833 as of June 30 this year. Meanwhile, he said PERKESO has expanded initiatives such as the MYFutureJobs portal, Career Bridge Tool, Career Launchpad programme and Satellite Centres to improve employment services and training access. Abdul Rahman said strategic partnerships with companies and training institutes also help boost jobseekers' competencies. He said HRD Corp's National Training Week 2025 attracted approximately 3.5 million participants from Malaysia and Asean. 'Over 72,000 free training sessions covered AI, coding, cybersecurity, data analytics and more through physical, online and hybrid formats,' he added.

Let due process prevail in death of student: Saifuddin

KAJANG: All parties must not speculate on the death of religious school student Zara Qairina Mahathir and respect the ongoing investigation process. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said if there are shortcomings in the police investigation papers, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) will request the police to rectify them. Saifuddin said his ministry does not wish to be drawn into the polemics surrounding the teenager's death and will leave the matter entirely to the relevant authorities to handle according to due process. 'This is how it works. We should follow procedure. When an incident occurs, the police will open an investigation paper. Once the police complete their investigation, they will hand it over to the attorney general,' he told reporters after the launch of the i-Deen programme at the Nada headquarters yesterday. Saifuddin stressed that interference by any party would only fuel further speculation. 'We must give space for the police to carry out their investigation. If not, people will ask, why is it taking so long? And if it's done too quickly, they'll ask, why so fast?' He added that any decision by the AG would be based on a thorough and careful process. 'The AG must be fully convinced before making a decision to prosecute, especially in high-profile cases where the public wants to know the truth of what happened. So, let the process unfold. If there are weaknesses in the investigation, it is standard practice for the AG to return the papers to the police for improvement and refinement.' Zara, a Form One student at a religious school in Papar, Sabah, was found unconscious after allegedly falling from a hostel building. She was later pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital at 11am on July 17. On Aug 1, Zara's family was reported to have requested an inquest to determine whether there were any criminal elements involved in her death. However, there has been no further update on the matter. The family's lawyers have appealed to the AGC to return the investigation papers to the police so the case can be reopened. Lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri claimed there were serious flaws and gaps in the investigation report received by the AGC.
