'This Is Just The Start': Luka Doncic's Wild Transformation Underlines Thirst For NBA Success With Lakers

Doncic, 26, has committed to rigorous workouts, transforming himself for the upcoming season. He is also expected to sign a four-year extension with the Lakers.
Luka Doncic, at just 26, has already built a Hall of Fame resume: five All-NBA First Team selections, 82 career triple-doubles (seventh all-time).
Yet, one narrative has lingered — his fitness.
For years, despite his elite production, Doncic's physique drew more attention than his stat lines. Critics pointed to his offseason weight fluctuations, and last August, he was publicly criticized for looking 'fat" during a charity game. When the Mavericks traded him to the Lakers in February, whispers followed — stories about his off-court habits, including beer, hookah, and even speculation that he was on Ozempic.
But this summer, the conversation has changed — dramatically.
Doncic spoke candidly to Men's Health's, revealing that he launched straight into two-a-day workouts the moment the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Minnesota.
'Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better."
The Slovenian star also admitted he didn't fully grasp the demands of the NBA during his early years, which ultimately led to his fitness declining over the initial years.
'When I came to the NBA, I was 18," he said. 'Honestly, I didn't know what to expect those first four or five years. Then I said, 'I need to do this.'"
'Especially in the NBA, you travel almost all the time. You're never home," he explained. 'And for me, you know, after the season, going back home, it's a big thing. I see my friends, my family, I see everybody. So it's not easy for sure."
But now, Doncic is embracing the challenge. His approach to fitness is no longer reactive — it's foundational.
'Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself," he said. 'This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop."
Lakers Betting Big on a Revitalized Star
With LeBron James nearing the twilight of his career, the Lakers are entering a new era — one with Doncic as the centerpiece. And they're backing that vision with long-term commitment.
According to recent reports, Doncic is expected to sign a four-year contract extension with the Lakers when he becomes eligible on August 2.
Now, along with his newfound dedication to fitness, the Lakers will be more than happy to blindly sign who they perceive to be the face of their franchise (and the league) for years to come.

Nikola Jokic once almost retired (Image via Facebook / Nikola Jokic) Nikola Jokic is one of the greatest players in NBA history. However, his basketball career nearly ended three years ago. Denver native DeMarcus Cousins, a former teammate of the pro player, recently talked about his time with the Denver Nuggets and about his teammate. In addition, he also claimed that the NBA player nearly thought about quitting rather than agreeing to a $300 million supermax contract with the franchise. DeMarcus Cousins reveals Nikola Jokic 's shocking thoughts before signing massive supermax deal DeMarcus Cousins recently opened up about his former team on the Straight Game Podcast and talked about how Nikola Jokic almost retired in 2022 instead of signing his supermax agreement with Denver. During his participation on the podcast, DeMarcus Cousins stated: 'A dangerous dude… What I love the most about Jokic is his personality. If you ever get the chance to have a conversation with him, if he tells you even a little more about himself, he'll be honest… He really don't give a f— about this s—. He doesn't care at all. This is like his second or third favorite thing to do, maybe third or fourth." He further continued: " by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 20 Breathtaking Blue Flag Beaches You Must Visit Click Here Undo Most games where he's dropping these crazy stats, he probably doesn't even want to be there.. And that's the scary part about all of it." He then narrated the story of his near-retirement and said: "(Someone else) signed an extension, and I said to (Jokic), yours is gonna be crazy… He said, 'I honestly think I might retire.' I said, 'And leave $300 million? Sign the contract and just get fat, at worst.'" Meanwhile, once during his initial appearance on Fadeaway World, Nikola Jokic almost spilled the news of his retirement while complimenting Yang Hansen. The Chinese rookie who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers sent Nikola Jokic a message in the NBA's most recent social media post on X. I'm happy that when he gets in his prime, that I'm gonna be out of the league probably, in two… nah, actually,' said Jokic as he looked into space with an 'oh no! what have I said' look on his face before changing the topic back to Hansen. However, as of now, Nikola Jokic hasn't said anything officially as of yet. Equally impressive, Ashvini blanked Uzbekistan's Mukhayyo Rakhimjonova by the same 3-0 margin to claim the 65kg crown. Moni Falls Just Short of Gold In the 57kg final, Moni put up a valiant fight but lost by the narrowest of margins, going down 5-6 to Kazakhstan's Madkhiya Usmanova. Despite the defeat, Moni's silver medal capped a strong campaign. Komal Claims Bronze with Aggressive Display Komal Verma added to India's medal tally with a bronze in the 49kg category, defeating Anhelina Burkina 8-3. Komal's aggressive tactics and offensive mindset paid off in the bronze medal bout. Not all Indian wrestlers reached the podium. In the 53kg category, Saarika also bowed out in the quarterfinals, falling to Japan's Rion Ogawa. (with PTI inputs) view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
