French Rugby Union's Christophe Reigt Terms The GMR Rugby Premier League As An "Interesting Try"

NDTV26-06-2025
There has been a buzz, and heads have been turning in the world of rugby. All thanks to the unique nature of the competition that is the GMR Rugby Premier League – a first ever franchise-based Rugby Sevens tournament in the world. The who's who from the rugby fraternity are part of this revolutionary movement, and keeping a close eye on proceedings was Christophe Reigt, General Manager, French Rugby Federation. Interestingly, France's men's rugby sevens team had won the Olympic Gold medal during the Paris Olympics, with Christophe being a part of the contingent.
'For us, at the French Rugby Federation, it was very important to come and see the GMR Rugby Premier League in India, because it is a very new product of Rugby Sevens, and we were keen to find out what is happening,' said Christophe, who is considered to be one of the foremost thinkers in the game.
'What's special in the GMR RPL, is that the league is trying a new format. And there is time for recovery for the players too as they are playing one game a day. This is a very new thing in Rugby Sevens, and it is very interesting for the people who are involved to watch this unfold. The franchise model is new, and it is different for sure,' the Frenchman explained.
The GMR RPL has produced some scintillating performances from the legends such as Akuila Rokolisoa, and Jerry Tuwai. And in Christophe's book, this is one of the best things about the tournament, as there is high quality rugby on display. This interestingly has been possible only after World Rugby put aside time on their calendar, so that the best of the best could make their way to India for the inaugural edition of the GMR Rugby Premier League.
'It is very interesting to see that in India that there is a movement that Rugby India and GMR Sports is anchoring to develop Rugby Sevens. It is a very good idea also to have international stars and legends show case the high level of the sport through the GMR Rugby Premier League. It is very important and an interesting way of developing Indian Rugby. It is a very interesting try,' he added.
Whilst some of the big international names have been front and centre in terms of the standout performances, the Indian players have also stepped up with some season-defining moments. One of the best performers in fact has been Javed Hussain for the Hyderabad Heroes, who is among the players with the most number of tries in the tournament.
'For the Indian players, they are able to play with the best international players, and have a better understanding of the level and calibre of rugby played at the highest levels. And they can share a lot of information on and off the field as well during the course of the month, which is very important.'
'This is a first step for the Indian players wherein they are more in touch with high-level rugby, and maybe through the year, in the future, the Indian players can get more experiences like the GMR RPL, which will help their development,' he added.
Reflecting on his time at the GMR RPL and the tournament overall, Christophe said, 'From my trip, hopefully, I can take back some new ideas. It isn't that only the traditionally strong rugby playing nations will have the best ideas. A good and new idea can from Indian Rugby as well.'

‘I wasn't a natural': How Rahul Dravid became one of cricket's greatest slip fielders with help from Bob Simpson

Former India captain Rahul Dravid had evolved from a wicket-keeper batter at the age-group level in Karnataka to an all-time great Test No. 3 for India. Even in India colours, Dravid had stepped up as the makeshift glovesman behind the stumps, but his legacy as one of the finest slip fielders in the game also remains firmly in place. Dravid held the world record for most Test catches for nearly 13 years since his retirement until England's Joe Root surpassed him during the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The legendary batter had once put down his snappy reflexes in the slips to a fruitful stint with legendary Australia cricketer and coach, Bob Simpson, who passed away aged 89 on Saturday. 'I wasn't a good enough bowler to be able to contribute with the ball. I tried my best. So I sort of figured out 'How do you contribute to the team? What do you do?'. I mean, sitting there as a batsman, what can I do really well, and one of the things was, if I catch well, it's a contribution. You feel you're involved, you're playing a part,' Dravid had once said on the Lessons Learnt with the Greats podcast. 'I had to work on it, I don't think I was as much a natural, but I had to practise a lot of slip catching, and one of the really good pieces of technical advice that I received early on was to ensure that the weight was on the balls of my feet and ensuring that my balance was really good as a fielder, and ensuring I got into a really good position.' Dravid recollected how a stint with Simpson between 1998-1999 helped him ace the slip fielder's technique and went on to break Mark Waugh's world record to become the first designated fielder to collect 200 Test catches. Simpson, who coached Australia to the 1987 World Cup title, joined the Indian national side on a consultant basis only two years after Dravid made his Test debut. 'I remember Bobby Simpson came and spent some time with the Indian team in 1998/99 and he took us through a lot of slip catching drills. And one of the things he stressed on a lot was having your feet bent a little bit so that you could get your weight into the balls of your feet. That was something I took to heart and practised a lot.' 'Even watching someone like Mark Waugh, the way he stood, in some ways I used to watch that. It was a really good Australian slip-catching unit: you had [Mark] Taylor, Waugh, they were really, really good, and you used to sort of watch them.' An out-and-out trier, Dravid had said that his 210 catches in 164 Tests was a product of diligence, exhorting that slip fielding was an art that got better with practice. 'Slip catching, a lot of it, is about practice – the more practice you can do, the variety of practice you can do – it's not mindlessly taking catches. I think catching [to] spinners was a very important thing for India, about a hundred of those catches are off two spinners – [Anil] Kumble and Harbhajan [Singh], I took about 60 of them playing in India – we do prepare turning tracks!' Regarded as one of the pioneers of modern-day Australian cricket, Simpson's transition from a great leader and astute slip fielder to coaching ensured that he unearthed a horde of stars during his coaching tenure. As one of the great slip fielders of his time, he is credited with training drills that helped Mark Waugh become one of the great catchers and more importantly turn David Boon into one of the sharpest short-leg catchers of all time. Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia from 1957 to 1978, scoring 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries. He captained Australia in 39 Tests and was their head coach for 10 years from 1986, helping them win the 1987 World Cup in India, the famous 1989 Ashes in England and an epic away series win in West Indies in 1995.

Jasprit Bumrah Ajit Agarkar, along with the All-India Men's Senior Selection Committee, will meet on Tuesday, August 19, to finalize the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup. Ahead of this crucial selection, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has updated his status for the eight-nation tournament starting September 9. Bumrah's confirmation of his availability for the tournament has given captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir a huge boost. Bumrah has expressed his desire to participate in the Asia Cup According to the Indian Express, Bumrah has already expressed his desire to participate in the tournament to the selectors. He is therefore almost certain to be included in the squad. 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for the Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' the Indian Express quoted a source as saying. India's Asia Cup campaign will begin on September 10 against the UAE. The highly anticipated match against Pakistan will take place in Dubai on September 14. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong are in Group B, while India, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and Oman are in Group A. Bumrah faces criticism for not playing all five Tests Jasprit Bumrah has been at the center of the action ever since the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy match against England ended. A number of former Indian cricket players have criticized the pacer for not playing all five Test matches. As part of workload management, it was already decided that Jasprit Bumrah would play in just three games before the five-match series started. But following India's victory at the Oval without him, the 31-year-old faced criticism. Some questioned Bumrah's few appearances, comparing him to Mohammed Siraj, who participated in all five games. Bumrah was released from the Test squad ahead of Day 2 of the fifth and final match at the Oval. The pacer had featured in the first Test at Headingley, the third at Lord's, and the fourth at Manchester. Bumrah grabbed two five-wicket hauls Bumrah picked a total of 14 wickets, which included two five-wicket hauls, while bowling 119.4 overs. In the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah played in all five Test matches against Australia. But during the last Test match in Sydney, he experienced a back spasm. He was consequently ruled out of the 2025 ICC Men's Champions Trophy, which India ultimately won. Bumrah also missed the first few games of the Mumbai Indians' IPL 2025 campaign. 'If he cannot play more than two matches in a row or sometimes even more than one, he must not be your frontline pick. Players who are match fit, eager, keen to play and perform should be picked any day for me over a highly skilled player. It will motivate such enthusiastic players even more,' Manjrekar wrote.
