Ukraine meets 40% of its armed forces' needs thanks to its domestic defence industry and has significantly increased weapons production, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says.
Source: Ukrainian news agency UNN
Details: During a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Sybiha said that Ukraine already has significant achievements and is a global leader in drone technologies.
Quote from Sybiha: "In certain areas, we have increased our production manifold. In some cases, we have scaled the production of military equipment and weapons for the needs of Ukrainian troops and defence by up to 35 times.
Thanks to our defence industry, we can now produce around 40% of our forces' needs. This is an extremely high figure. We are currently manufacturing artillery shells, including those of Western or NATO calibre, which we did not produce before the war… Some countries with significant potential are unable to produce in a year what we can produce in a month."
Details: Sybiha emphasised that Ukraine needs additional investment for further development of the defence sector. He also highlighted the importance of reducing dependence on external suppliers of critical weapons.
Background:
Earlier, Ukrainian Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin reported that in the previous year, one third of Ukraine's total GDP growth was ensured by the defence industry.
Weapons and equipment worth US$9 billion were produced in 2024 – three times more than in 2023. Smetanin said Ukraine's GDP grew by 3.9% last year, with the defence industry contributing a third of that growth – 1.27%. He added that the defence sector had increased its capacity sevenfold.
Previously, it was reported that in 2024, private arms manufacturers could have produced an additional 1.7 million units of drones and electronic warfare systems, but they did not receive government contracts.
Ukraine topped the list of the world's largest importers of major types of weapons in the period 2020–2024. Its arms imports increased almost 100-fold compared to 2015–2019, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Ukraine became the only European country in the top 10 arms importers. Meanwhile, many other European countries have also significantly increased their arms purchases in recent years.

Oil Gains as Focus Shifts to Zelenskiy Meet After Alaska Summit

(Bloomberg) -- Oil rose as investors turned their attention to Donald Trump's meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday, with the Ukrainian leader facing US pressure to reach a peace deal with Russia that involves ceding territory. The US-Canadian Road Safety Gap Is Getting Wider A Photographer's Pipe Dream: Capturing New York's Vast Water System Festivals and Parades Are Canceled Amid US Immigration Anxiety A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome Princeton Plans New Budget Cuts as Pressure From Trump Builds Brent traded near $66 a barrel after closing 1.5% lower in the previous session, while West Texas Intermediate was above $63. In a show of support, European leaders including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, will join the high-stakes meeting in Washington with Trump and Zelenskiy. The US president said after his talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday that he'll urge Zelenskiy to make a quick deal, and sounded receptive to the Russian leader's demand that Ukraine give up large swathes of land. 'We're still a long ways off,' Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who took part in the summit, told Fox News on Sunday. 'We are not at the precipice of a peace agreement. We are not at the edge of one. But I do think progress was made.' Trump told European leaders after the meeting that the US could contribute to any security guarantees, and that Putin was prepared to accept that. However, it remains unclear what kind of guarantees are being discussed with the Russian leader, and what the Kremlin is willing to accept. In a Truth Social post late Sunday, Trump said Zelenskiy 'can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.' He also made a reference to Crimea, without providing further details. Prior to the summit in Alaska, Trump told allies that reaching a ceasefire would be his key demand, and threatened to walk out of the talks and impose tough new measures on Moscow and countries buying its oil if it wasn't met. On Friday, the US president signaled he was in no hurry to implement penalties. So far, Trump has singled out India for buying Russian crude, slapping the South Asian nation with hefty tariffs for doing so. However, the US president said in a Fox News interview on Friday that he will hold off increasing levies on Chinese goods due to the country's purchases of Moscow's crude. 'The fact that further meetings are taking place here is a positive,' said Robert Rennie, the head of commodity and carbon research at Westpac Banking Corp. Talks around seeking a resolution to the Ukraine war have injected uncertainty into the market, and led to oil trading in a narrow range recently. Still, futures are down more than 10% this year on concerns around the fallout from Trump's trade policies and as OPEC+ rapidly returns idled barrels to the market. Hong Kong court hears closing arguments in tycoon Jimmy Lai's trial

Hong Kong prosecutors on Monday began closing arguments in the trial of pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai, saying the septuagenarian was fit to attend hearings after an adjournment last week to equip him with a heart monitor. The 77-year-old founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper has pleaded not guilty to two counts of foreign collusion, with authorities accusing him of using various platforms to lobby Western nations to sanction China and Hong Kong. The charges are brought under the city's national security law, which Beijing imposed after the finance hub saw huge and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests in 2019. The trial was scheduled to begin its final stages last Thursday but was postponed twice: first due to bad weather and then to address Lai's medical needs. The defence had said on Friday that Lai was experiencing heart "palpitations" and had an episode where he felt like he was "collapsing". Prosecutor Anthony Chau said on Monday that Lai had been prescribed medication and was wearing a heart rate monitoring device, which was given to him on Friday. "(Lai) has made no complaint on his heart condition or general health condition and is fit to attend court," Chau said. Judge Esther Toh also read out a memo by a senior medical officer saying that Lai was "physically and mentally fit for court". Concerns have been raised previously over Lai's health by his family and rights groups. The media tycoon has been kept behind bars since December 2020, reportedly in solitary confinement, and has lost weight during that time. The Hong Kong government said in a statement on Friday that the "medical care received by Lai Chee-ying in custody is adequate and comprehensive". "In view of (Lai's) claims of heart palpitations, after a visiting specialist from the Hospital Authority conducted a detailed examination on him on August 7, no abnormality was found," the statement read. - Legal issues debated - Dressed in a white shirt and pale windbreaker, Lai appeared in court on Monday without any medical equipment visible on his body. He smiled and waved to supporters and family members in the public gallery when he entered. He listened to Monday's court proceedings via a set of headphones and closed his eyes for a few minutes during the morning session. The longrunning trial, which began in December 2023, is entering its final stages as Western nations and rights groups continue to call for Lai's release. Aside from the collusion offence -- which could land him in prison for life -- Lai is also charged with "seditious publication" related to 161 op-eds carrying his byline. Prosecutors are expected to take two days to make closing arguments, Chau said. He spent Monday morning addressing legal issues, such as the interpretation of "collusion" under Hong Kong's national security law. Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said last week that Hong Kong should "drop the baseless charges" against Lai, adding that holding him in "prolonged solitary detention while his health fails has been outrageously cruel". US President Donald Trump told a Fox News radio programme last week that he brought up the tycoon's case with Chinese President Xi Jinping. "I'm going to do everything I can to save him," the outlet quoted Trump as saying. The Hong Kong government last week said it "strongly disapproved and rejected the slanderous remarks made by external forces" regarding Lai's case. hol/reb/jfx
