Spurs' Dylan Harper opens up about playing in NBA Summer League

USA Today15-07-2025
After sustaining a groin injury, No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper has enjoyed suiting up with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Harper missed the Spurs' stint in the California Classic and their first game in the desert due to a minor issue, as described by the team. He debuted on Saturday, producing 16 points and six rebounds in a win over Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks.
The 6-foot-6 guard scored another 16 points, two rebounds and two assists on Monday in a win over the Utah Jazz, who were without No. 5 pick Ace Bailey (hip). It was his second game at the Thomas & Mack Center, the larger of the two arenas used for the event.
"The atmosphere is crazy," Harper said. "I think when I was here (as a fan), and just when you're watching it from afar, and then when you're on the court, you can hear the crowd is into it, no matter what game it is. It is just unbelievable, so just probably the crowd, energy, and, honestly, how competitive it is."
Harper was regarded as one of the top lead guards in the draft as a bigger player who can score, play with physicality and see the court well. He has showcased each of those elements through his first two appearances and has shown no lingering effects from his injury.
Those two games have served as the first competitive action for Harper since the end of last season at Rutgers. He has been inefficient, shooting just 35.7% from the field, but the team doesn't appear to be too worried about those struggles.
"The first game, you get your nerves out," Spurs summer league coach Mike Noyes said. "Second game, you're trying to flow into it. It is hard, the position he is in. He hasn't played in months, and the expectations are high. The expectations shouldn't be high. He is right where he needs to be, so if he focuses on defense (and) makes the right play for the team, his conditioning will be way better once the season comes around."
After beginning 3-0 in their stint in Las Vegas, the Spurs will play at least two more contests. The team could have the opportunity to play in the summer league playoffs, with the top four teams qualifying for the semifinals, and play a sixth game if they make the final.
The group will play next on Thursday against the Charlotte Hornets (7 p.m. EDT, ESPN). After missing four games due to injury, it seems as though Harper may play the rest of their schedule in the desert, which the 19-year-old is prepared for.
"We're ready for every game," Harper said. "I think this right here showed that we don't quit when we get down or when hard times happen, we just keep pushing, moving forward. For us and the group, seeing this win and seeing it through is great for us."

Tottenham: Thomas Frank provides 'brutal' James Maddison injury update as midfielder spotted on crutches

Thomas Frank has described James Maddison's injury as 'brutal' after the midfielder was taken off on a stretcher on Sunday. Maddison was withdrawn, just minutes after coming on, with his head in his hands after collapsing to the pitch during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in South Korea. He looked distraught and the injury is a major concern for Spurs ahead of the new season, having earlier seen captain Heung-min Son bid farewell to the club before leaving. Maddison missed the end of last season with a knee injury and now looks set for another spell on the sidelines after damaging the same knee. Dejan Kulusevski will miss the start of the season and Spurs missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White, meaning Thomas Frank was already short of creative players. Frank said: 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.' He added: "I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today. 'It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.' The full extent of the injury will remain unclear until the club conducts scans, though Maddison was spotted 'looking devastated' on crutches after the game. Frank added to SPURSPLAY: 'We don't know the full assessment of it yet, so we need to see that.' Spurs face Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup next Wednesday before kicking off the new Premier League season at home to Burnley next Saturday.

Heung-min Son in tears as Tottenham legend says emotional goodbye after final Spurs game

An emotional Heung-min Son was in tears as he said goodbye to Tottenham in what is likely to be his last appearance in a Spurs shirt. After announcing he will leave Spurs this summer, Son captained Spurs for the final time as they played Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in his native South Korea. The 33-year-old was given a guard of honour by both sets of players as he left the pitch in what was a beautiful moment for a Spurs legend. Son was smiling as he walked off the pitch after being substituted in the second half but he started crying when he sat down on the bench and the 64,773 fans inside the Seoul World Cup Stadium started chanting his name. Son has scored 173 goals in 454 games for Spurs and last season captained them to their first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final. He is in advanced talks to join MLS side LAFC but has described the decision as 'the most difficult one I have made in my career'. Speaking this week, Son said: 'I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English. Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.' New Spurs manager Thomas Frank has described Son as 'a true Spurs legend' and 'one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League'. 'If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans," Frank said. 'A beautiful ending.'

Heung-min Son: Tottenham strike agreement with MLS side for club captain

LAFC have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign Heung-min Son. Standard Sport understands that the deal could be worth as much as £20million, which would surpass the record $22m (£16.6m) fee paid for a Major League Soccer player, set by Emmanuel Latte Lath's move to Atlanta United in February 2025. The 33-year-old will now finalise the move, having played his final game for Spurs after a decade of service. Son leaves with a record of 173 goals in 454 appearances, and led Spurs to Europa League glory in his final competitive game, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought in the process. The South Korean bid an emotional farewell to Spurs in Seoul earlier on Sunday, as the club played out a 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Club captain Son was given a standing ovation from the stands and a guard of honour from both sets of players as he was substituted in the second half. Son told the club's website: "It was a perfect moment. Sharing these beautiful moments are something that I will never forget and I will always appreciate it - from the fans, the players and the gaffer. "He understood my situation and was always on my side. He always listened to me and asked what I wanted to do. I have a huge respect and am very grateful." Reflecting on his time in north London, he added: "I wish them all the best. There are five competitions ahead and I hope they win all the five competitions. That's my wish. "Spurs will always be in my heart and the boys will always be in my history books. It was incredible.'
