CSK star Dewald Brevis breaks captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's T20I record with stunning ton against Australia

First Post2 days ago
Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls in the 2nd T20I against Australia, breaking multiple records and leading South Africa to a 53-run win in Darwin. He even went past his CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's T20I record in the process.
South Africa's star cricketer Dewald Brevis was on fire in the second T20I against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Tuesday, August 12. The 22-year-old smashed an unbeaten 125 runs from just 56 balls, hitting 12 fours and 8 sixes. He reached his fifty in only 25 balls and then took just 16 more deliveries to get to his hundred. Thanks to his explosive knock, South Africa scored 218 for 7.

This was a big turnaround for Brevis, who had scored only 2 runs in the first T20I, where South Africa lost by 17 runs. However, the Chennai Super Kings player tore apart the Australian bowling attack in the second match and set multiple records as the Proteas won by a big margin of 53 runs.
'I have not really thought about it (the record), but extremely grateful. Just happy we won today, great to be out here on the winning side,' Brevis said after the match.
Brevis became the youngest South African to score a century in men's T20Is at 22 years and 105 days, beating Richard Levi's previous record. His hundred came in just 41 balls, making it the second-fastest for South Africa in the format, behind David Miller's 35-ball century in 2017. It was also the fastest hundred ever scored against Australia in men's T20Is, breaking Martin Guptill's 49-ball effort from 2018.
Brevis breaks Gaikwad's record
His score of 125 not out is now the highest by a South African in men's T20Is, going past Faf du Plessis' 119 against West Indies in 2015. It is also the highest score against Australia in the format, bettering CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad's 123 not out from 2023. Brevis became only the sixth player to score a T20I hundred against Australia, joining Gaikwad, Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Shai Hope.
Brevis also smashed the record for most sixes by a South African against Australia in a T20I, hitting eight in his innings. The previous best was five, shared by Faf du Plessis and Donavan Ferreira. His knock is now the highest score in men's T20Is played in Australia, overtaking Shane Watson's 124 not out against India in 2016.

I'm just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket: Maxwell

In the second T20I between Australia and South Africa, Glenn Maxwell took on an unusual role — bowling inside the PowerPlay. Between the 2022 T20 World Cup and this series, he had bowled only five PowerPlay overs in T20Is. So when he dismissed South Africa captain Aiden Markram, the spin-bowling all-rounder reacted animatedly. By his own admission, Maxwell is just as surprised as anyone when he gets a wicket. 'I love getting wickets.' Maxwell told 'It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the PowerPlay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can.' With an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell is looking to build his experience bowling under fielding restrictions. 'I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on,' Maxwell, who has 49 T20I wickets, said. 'Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So it might be something we think about head forward,' he added. Maxwell has also spent most of his career shuffling through batting positions, adapting to team needs — whether taking on a favourable matchup or finishing the innings. 'I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down,' the 36-year-old said. 'I'm filling holes at the moment.' 'Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings). (I'm) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible,' Maxwell said.

R Ashwin on Tim David: ‘I shouldn't say this…told the decision makers of a few IPL teams to pick him'

Australian power-hitter Tim David has been in sublime form in T20Is. In the Caribbean, he managed to pull off a blistering ton, and in the first T20I against South Africa in Darwin, he pulled Australia out of trouble by scoring a substantial 83-run innings, which helped his team win the game. Earlier in the year, David was also part of the Indian Premier League-winning side Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Coming down the order, David played crucial knocks throughout the season and helped RCB nick off close games. Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin claimed that he did flag a few franchises about David. 'I shouldn't say this, but I told the decision makers of a few IPL teams to pick him before the last auction. They all said, 'No, his game has dropped off drastically.' I believe the future of T20 cricket is going to be having tall batters with long levers and strong build. They are going to rule the roost if there are no changes brought to the wide line,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. 'A player RCB picked up at base price (₹3 crore) has taken his game to the next level. It's good to see Australia sending him up the order. A real steal for RCB,' Ashwin added. Intriguingly, David was seen wielding an SS Ton blade marked in the name of West Indies colossus Andre Russell who retired from international cricket after the previous T20I between the sides. 'I've spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I'm working on my shot selection. I've been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like it was the best time to use it,' David said at the post-match presentation ceremony after century in West Indies in the 3rd T20I. 'Was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn't think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I'm stoked,' David added.

Pathan makes stunning U-turn after supporting Rohit during viral interview in Australia: ‘If he was not captain...'

Irfan Pathan also opened up on his viral interview of Rohit Sharma on the official broadcaster during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, insisting that he was being polite to the star cricketer who had opted to sit out of the series finale after a horrendous run with the bat. Irfan Pathan felt that Rohit Sharma would have been dropped from the Indian Test team ahead of the tour of Australia had he not been captain. Image: AP/PTI Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan claims that he was being polite to Rohit Sharma in an interview during the tour of Australia, adding that the 'Hitman' would not have even retained his place in the playing XI had he not been captain at the time. Rohit had been having a horrid run in Test cricket after leading the Men in Blue to victory in the T20 World Cup, whether against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home or in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. And after skipping the first Test against Australia in Perth, Rohit could manage just 31 runs in the next three games at miserable average of 6.2. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rohit later opted out of the fifth Test in Sydney, handing the reins back to star pacer Jasprit Bumrah who had captained the side to a 295-run victory in the tour opener. However, in a defiant interview with the broadcasters conducted by Pathan, Rohit maintained that he was not done with the Test format yet. 'You have invited him, so you will behave politely' 'Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Test cricket that year was 6, so we said that if he was not the captain, he would not have had a place in the team, and this is true,' Pathan told Lallantop. 'People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely. 'When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite, and we had to show that, because he was our guest. So that was connected and said we were supporting him, but it was we who said… we had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he should not have had a place in the playing XI. If he was not the captain of the team, he would have been dropped,' the former pacer added. Despite expressing his desire to lead the side in the tour of England, Rohit would announce his retirement from Test cricket in May, with batting icon and former captain Virat Kohli following suit just a few days later. The tour of Australia, where India surrendered the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in nearly a decade, turned out to be the final appearance in whites for both stalwarts, who currently remain active only in One-Day Internationals. It also marked the final appearance in an Indian kit for spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from all forms of international cricket midway during the tour. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
