Scottish city with 'family friendly attractions' named among UK's 'best base' for roadtrips
Glasgow has been ranked the best Scottish city for family road trips, according to a new nationwide study just as the school summer holidays hit their peak.
The research, carried out by Indigo Car Hire, placed Glasgow second overall in the UK, with only Bristol ahead. The ranking considered factors such as the number of scenic drives accessible from major cities, levels of traffic congestion, and the availability of family-friendly attractions nearby.
Scoring 72.6 out of 100, Glasgow outperformed other major cities including Birmingham, London, and Manchester, thanks to its proximity to the Highlands and strong traffic and tourism metrics.
Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, said: 'Our new UK Family Road Trip Index shows that Glasgow has raced into second spot as Britain's best city for family road trips this summer, scoring an impressive 72.6 percent out of 100.
'With stunning scenic drives on its doorstep, lighter traffic than London or Manchester, and plenty of family -friendly attractions, it's the perfect launchpad for August adventures.
'While big cities like London still shine with sheer choice, families looking to escape the jams may find Glasgow the real holiday winner for a base this year.'
Glasgow earned praise for its relatively low traffic score of 124.3, the second lowest across all UK cities surveyed.
Families setting off from the city can easily reach a wide range of outdoor destinations and attractions within an hour's drive, from tranquil lochs to adventure parks and historic castles.
Among the most popular routes is the A82 to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, one of the most scenic and accessible day trips from the city.
The journey winds past hills and glens, with the chance to stop in the picturesque village of Luss, enjoy a picnic by the loch, or even venture out on a boat.
Those willing to go further afield can drive north to the Isle of Skye, passing through dramatic landscapes including Glencoe and Fort William before reaching the island via the Skye Bridge. The five-hour drive is a favourite for those craving wild scenery and unforgettable views.
For a coastal option, the journey to Oban offers another popular route. Travelling west along the A82 and A85, drivers pass Loch Awe and the ruins of Kilchurn Castle before arriving at the harbour town, known as the 'Gateway to the Isles'.

Oban's fresh seafood, nearby ferries and island-hopping opportunities make it a standout choice for families.
Closer to home, within the city itself, top-rated family attractions such as the Kelvingrove Museum and Glasgow Science Centre offer plenty of educational and entertaining activities.
Other cities in the top six include Birmingham in third place, followed by London, Liverpool and Manchester.
Bristol topped the list with a score of 81.1, noted for its easy access to Somerset, Dorset and the Cotswolds, along with having the lowest traffic congestion score in the study.

Turkish Airlines flight to Edinburgh declares mid-air emergency
The Turkish Airlines flight TK1345 from Istanbul landed in the capital shortly before 4pm on Friday after calling a general emergency on board. The emergency, first reported by Edinburgh Live, was declared during the plane's descent into Edinburgh, above Midlothian, flight tracking data shows. READ MORE: Scottish teenager taken to hospital after being 'slashed' by knife Turkish Aviation site HavaSosyalMedya also shared the incident on Twitter/X, saying that the plane had issued a 7700 emergency code, although the reason behind the code was not given. According to the site, the 7700 code signifies an "abnormal situation has occurred", but it does not provide any information about the nature or the severity of the issue on board. Turkish Airlines has been contacted for comment.
