Dortmund complete escape act to snatch top-four berth
Dortmund – Borussia Dortmund will play Champions League football next season after a 3-0 home win over a 10-man Holstein Kiel on Saturday completed an incredible late-season run.
Sitting in 11th just seven weeks ago, Dortmund collected 22 of a possible 24 points in their last eight league matches, climbing up to fourth, past Freiburg who lost 3-1 at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Dortmund, who had not been in the top four since the end of matchday three in September, got off to an excellent start against their already relegated opponents when Serhou Guirassy converted a third-minute penalty.
Knowing they needed a big win to guarantee a top-four finish, Dortmund's hopes looked even rosier just six minutes later when Kiel's Carl Johansson saw red for a last-man foul.
Marcel Sabitzer added a second with a deflected low shot two minutes after halftime and Felix Nmecha made it three when he scored from close range with 73 minutes gone.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac, who took over in January, said his side, Champions League finalists a year ago, should not get carried away by reaching the club's 'minimum goal'
'We're glad, I'm happy and what we've shown in the past few weeks has been sensational, but we shouldn't be celebrating,' Kovac told reporters.
Dortmnd captain Emre Can was more upbeat, saying 'we've had some great Champions League evenings, we want to experience that again.'
Dortmund will be joined in the Champions League by Frankfurt, who came from a goal down to win at Freiburg, qualifying for Europe's top competition through league placing for the first time.
Freiburg, who started the weekend in fourth and needed to win to guarantee a debut Champions League spot, took the lead after 27 minutes when Ritsu Doan volleyed in.
Frankfurt's Ansgar Knauff did his former club Dortmund a favour when he levelled things up just before halftime.
Frankfurt added two goals in three second-half minutes through Rasmus Kristensen and Ellyes Skhiri to grab hold of the match and their Champions League fate.
Freiburg fell to fifth and will play in the Europa League next season; they will be joined in the competition by the winner of the German Cup final between Stuttgart and third-flight Arminia Bielefeld.
Elsewhere, champions Bayern Munich finished the season in style, farewelling departing veteran Thomas Mueller in a 4-0 win at Hoffenheim.
Harry Kane scored his 26th league goal of the year, winning the top goalscorer gong for the second straight season, with Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry also getting on the scoresheet.
Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Mainz in Xabi Alonso's final match in the dugout.
Last season's unbeaten champions fell behind with 35 minutes played when Paul Nebel scored but Patrick Schick scored twice in five minutes after halftime to take the lead, while bringing his season tally to 21 goals.
Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt levelled things up from the spot. Steffan Bell's stoppage time goal was rubbed off for a handball but Mainz stayed sixth and sealed a Europa Conference League placing.
Despite missing victory, Leverkusen set a Bundesliga record by going 34 games without defeat away from home.
'For sure I'm going to miss it, I've learned a lot and I'll take a lot from these three years for the future,' Alonso told reporters. The coach is reportedly set to take over at Real Madrid in the summer.
RB Leipzig's poor season continued, losing 3-2 at home to Stuttgart to miss out on European football completely for the first time since their debut promotion in 2016.
Heidenheim will play in the relegation playoff after a 4-1 home loss against Werder Bremen.
Elsewhere, Union Berlin came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Augsburg, with Andrej Ilic scoring a brace.
Bochum, who were relegated last week, bade farewell to the top flight with a 2-0 win at St Pauli, while Wolfsburg won 1-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Macron welcomes PSG team to presidential palace to celebrate their historic Champions League win
The winner of European club football's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and head to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, which overnight Saturday saw acts of violence and clashes with police. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Paris Saint-Germain football team to the presidential palace on Sunday to celebrate their historic Champions League win. Before meeting with Macron, PSG were paraded through the Champs-Elysee in an open roof coach bus. The team beat Italian side Inter Milan 5-0 in the tournament's final the day prior in Munich. It was the first time PSG ever won the title – having coming up short in their only previous final against Bayern Munich in 2020. French authorities say two people died after celebrations erupted around the country following the team's win. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the city of Dax during a PSG street party, according to the national police. Another person was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both deaths are being investigated. The interior ministry also said 18 police officer in Paris were injured and hundreds of people were arrested. Macron condemned the 'unacceptable' violence which had occurred during celebrations following PSG's victory as he welcomed the team to the Elysee Palace. 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours, the violent clashes are unacceptable,' he said before congratulating the team.

Maresca targets European history for Chelsea in Conference League final
Wroclaw – Enzo Maresca is a man with a point to prove as he targets football history for Chelsea in Wednesday's UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis. Victory in the final round of Premier League matches at Nottingham Forest on Sunday secured qualification for next season's Champions League. Now Maresca's thoughts turn to Wroclaw and the chance for Chelsea to become the first team to win all five of UEFA's major men's club competitions. The Blues have twice won the Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup and the defunct Cup Winners' Cup and can now complete the set if they overcome Betis in the final of Europe's newest competition in Poland. Maresca has had a rollercoaster first season in charge at Stamford Bridge after replacing Mauricio Pochettino. His team were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool in mid-December before stumbling badly, but results picked up again towards the end of the campaign. Maresca, clearly frustrated, rounded on his critics after his youthful side secured fourth spot in the Premier League on Sunday with a 1-0 win at the City Ground. 'All the ones that (think) they are the answer, or all the ones that they are the truth, they were saying that we are too young, we are not good enough,' he said. 'Unfortunately for them, they'll be all wrong, the ones that (think) they are the truth and they have the answer for everything.' Maresca, who has also been criticised by fans over perceived cautious tactics, told that winning the Conference League would turn a good season into a 'great one' for Chelsea. 'It would be a way of saying that we are back and that we are a winning club in Europe, and we hope to achieve just that.' The west London club are still waiting to win their first silverware since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022. The 2021 European champions were clear favourites to win the Conference League from the start of the competition and have won 11 of their 12 games. Former Leicester boss Maresca, 45, has rotated his squad during the competition, giving opportunities to youth and fringe players and has again stressed the need to make changes for Wednesday's match. – Pellegrini 'father figure' – Maresca will pit his wits against 71-year-old Manuel Pellegrini, a man whom he describes as a football 'father figure' after playing under him at Malaga and serving as assistant coach at West Ham. 'I am where I am today thanks to him,' he said. 'I worked with Manuel for four years — two years as a player and two years as part of his staff. So, I owe so much to him in terms of what I've achieved. 'I am grateful for the relationship we have and the advice he gives me. He told me never to change.' Immensely experienced ex-Real Madrid and Manchester City boss Pellegrini said his former protege was destined for a long career in football. 'You can often tell which players might go on to be good coaches —- from the impression they have on others, how they absorb concepts in training,' he said. 'With both Enzo and Willy (Caballero, Chelsea assistant coach), I was sure they'd go on to become influential coaches on a global level.' The Chilean, whose side finished sixth in La Liga, can call upon the talents of the rejuvenated Antony, on loan from Manchester United, and Isco, who won five Champions League trophies at Real Madrid. And the Seville-based club, playing in their first European final, can take heart from a remarkable statistic. Since the start of the 2001/02 season, all 23 Champions League, Europa League or Conference League finals that have featured Spanish hopefuls have been won by a Spanish team. Pellegrini wants to put on a 'show' in Wroclaw. 'We all know that winning is always very important, but I think that how you win makes it even more important,' he said.
