Raptors Summer League takeaways: The kids are alright
Article content
Yes, it came at Las Vegas Summer League Friday night and, sure, only two locks to be in head coach Darko Rajakovic's rotation (Jamal Shead and Ja'Kobe Walter) suited up and it needs to be noted that opponent Chicago was nowhere close to a real NBA outfit, but that was one heck of a start.

Even the news just prior to tip-off that prized rookie Collin Murray-Boyles would be held out due to a left adductor strain couldn't spoil the day for the summer Raptors.

The group looked hungry, aggressive but still measured enough to keep the fouling under control and simply overwhelmed the hapless Bulls, who turned the ball over 33 times.

• Maybe hold off on assuming Jonathan Mogbo's minutes will be replaced by Murray-Boyles and others. The 31st pick a year ago was arguably the best player on the court. Not only did he hit all but one of his eight shot attempts (though none were of the three-point variety, something Mogbo needs to change), but he also was as good as anyone defensively. When Chicago's most talented player, Matas Buzelis, tried to make things happen, Mogbo was there to say absolutely not repeatedly. It was impressive stuff.

The real Raptors are stacked with long, big men who do many things well, with shooting being the exception. Mogbo is one of them, but if he keeps playing like this, Rajakovic might have to find a spot for him.

Keep in mind that Mogbo flashed his potential late in the season with one triple-double in April, another game where he was a point shy of a triple double, another where he had eight points, rebounds and assists and one where he was three assists short. Meaningless games or not, it isn't easy to consistently fill the boxscore like that and offence isn't even what will get Mogbo on an NBA court.

• Despite only being around for 31 years, the Raptors arguably boast the most impressive history of elite slam dunkers in league history. Vince Carter is widely regarded as the best dunker of all-time, Tracy McGrady, Terrence Ross and DeMar DeRozan were also nearly as good as it gets and Norman Powell and Kawhi Leonard had some historic jams too with the team in the playoffs. Hardcore Raptors fans remember the likes of Keon Clark, Sonny Weems, Fred Jones and Jamario Moon as well. We feel confident adding Alijah Martin to the list after one appearance. This year's 39th pick threw down an absolutely silly one-handed cradle jam in the second quarter that probably will be the best dunk of Summer League this year.

Red Bulls, Fire clash in pivotal Eastern Conference affair
(Photo credit: Dustin Safranek-Imagn Images) A pair of teams fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference meet on Saturday night as the Chicago Fire face the visiting New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls (9-9-6, 33 points) and Fire (9-9-5, 32 points) are ninth and 10th in the East standings, respectively. The Fire, though, have a match in hand. Chicago is coming off a 2-0 win over CF Montreal on July 19 behind goals from Hugo Cuypers and Jack Elliott. Philip Zinckernagel, an MLS All-Star Game selection, added an assist. The Fire have shown marked improvement under Gregg Berhalter in his first season as head coach and technical director. The next step, though, is Chicago qualifying for its first playoff appearance since 2017, and that includes taking advantage of the transfer window that opened on Thursday. 'It's a work in progress,' Berhalter said. 'We've openly stated that we want to add players to the team and keep the team moving forward and progressing. There's a number of targets that we've been speaking to, and now it's about really honing on a few of them and then pursuing the deal.' Fire center back Carlos Teran, out since mid-April with an upper leg injury, has returned to training and is 'day-to-day,' per Berhalter. New York last played on July 19 against Inter Miami CF, getting an Alexander Hack opener in the 14th minute before allowing the next five goals - two to Lionel Messi - in a 5-1 defeat. The Red Bulls will look to bounce back from a heavy loss in its last outing, a win getting them a step closer to an unprecedented 16th-straight playoff appearance. 'We have to play with a high intensity. We have to play with the right mentality. Those are two big things that we have to improve,' Hack said. 'We have to be ready from the first minute until the 95th minute, play as a team, support each other, (and) fight for each other.' The Red Bulls on Wednesday announced that they had signed Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren from Rakow Czestochowa in Poland's first division.

Cubs' Taillon, Assad nearing returns to depleted staff as trade deadline approaches
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs line up as one of the prospective buyers, especially for pitching, as baseball's July 31 trade deadline approaches. In the meantime, Chicago — which entered Friday at 60-42 and a game behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central — is inching closer to having some injured pitchers return. On Friday before a game against the White Sox at Rate Field, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said starter Jameson Taillon, out since July 1 with a right calf strain, is expected begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa next week. The big right-hander threw a 47-pitch bullpen session Friday. Taillon is set to toss to live hitters in Milwaukee early next week and then report to the Cubs' top affiliate. Taillon is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA and was mainstay in the Chicago's rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old lost his final three straight games, with a 10.66 ERA in that span, after winning five in a row. Taillon's injury opened a second gap in a Chicago rotation that already was thinned when ace left-hander Justin Steele's made only four starts before needing season-ending elbow surgery. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Right-hander Javier Assad also is expected to join Iowa next week. Assad has not pitched this season due to a left oblique strain, but was 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 29 starts last season. Righty Porter Hodge, out since July 8 with right shoulder impingement, is scheduled to pitch for Iowa on Saturday. Hodge is 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA in 26 relief appearances this season. Catcher Miguel Amaya, recovering from a left oblique strain, also is expected to join Iowa next week. He's batting .280 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 29 games this season, but hasn't played since May 24. ___ AP MLB:
