Six Police Personnel Killed in Kenya by Suspected Shabaab Fighters

Asharq Al-Awsat23-03-2025
At least six police personnel were killed in Kenya while four were injured in an attack on a police camp by suspected militants in Garissa county in the country's east on the border with Somalia, police said.
The assault which occurred early Sunday was carried out by suspected fighters from Somalia's al Qaeda-allied al Shabaab group, said a police report sent out to the media.
Al Shabaab frequently carries out cross-border attacks in the area against both military and civilian targets.
Attackers from the group launched an assault around dawn on a camp housing police reservists and "used assorted weapons to overrun the camp," the report said.
"Six (6) fatalities have been confirmed with four (4) injured and in hospital."
On Tuesday the US embassy issued an advisory, telling Americans not to travel to some places in Kenya including Garissa and other counties along the border with Somalia due to threats of terrorism.

Indian killed, one abducted in Niger attack: embassy

NIAMEY, Niger: An Indian national was killed and another abducted in what India's embassy termed a 'terrorist' attack in southwestern Niger, while a third is listed as missing, it said in a statement. Local sources said unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at a construction site for an electrical line in the Dosso region, around 100 kilometers (63 miles) from the capital Niamey. Urging Indian nationals in Niger to be 'vigilant,' India's embassy in Niamey said it was in contact with the employer and families of the victims as well as the Nigerian government to facilitate repatriation of the dead man's remains. It said it was also working to secure the release of the person abducted in the attack, which took place Tuesday near the Nigerian border. Local sources and social media posts suggested at least one Nigerien soldier was killed in the attack, which authorities had not yet commented on Friday. Niger, under military rule following a 2023 coup, has faced around a decade of violence perpetrated by jihadists affiliated to Al-Qaeda and the Daesh group. The Dosso region borders both Nigeria and Benin, where attacks regularly target civilians, the army and also a giant oil pipeline transporting crude from Niger to Benin. The authorities generally blame such attacks on 'terrorists' or 'bandits.' Dosso borders the western town of Tillaberi near the borders with Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, which has become a stronghold for militant groups. According to official Indian sources, five Indian technicians were kidnapped in an April 25 attack just north of the nearby town of Sakoira. Twelve Nigerien soldiers were killed in that attack. Earlier this month, three Indian nationals working in Mali were kidnapped from a cement factory in the west of the country.

Ethiopia arrests dozens of suspected ISIS militants, Fana broadcaster reports

Ethiopia has arrested dozens of suspected ISIS militants, who it claimed have been trained and deployed to carry out operations across the country, the state-affiliated Fana broadcaster reported. The 82 suspects were part of ISIS' Somalia affiliate, which operates in the semi-autonomous Puntland region, according to a statement by the National Intelligence Security Services which was shared with Fana. The ISIS faction in Somalia has become an increasingly important part of its parent organization's worldwide network in recent years. 'NISS has been closely monitoring the group's cross-border infiltration strategies and its efforts to establish sleeper cells in Ethiopia,' Fana reported late on Tuesday. With an estimated 700 to 1,500 fighters, ISIS' Somalia wing has grown in recent years thanks to an influx of foreign fighters and increasing revenues. But it is still much smaller than al Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab militant group, which controls large parts of southern and central Somalia. The US military has carried out periodic air strikes against the group for years and recently intensified the strikes since President Donald Trump took office. Puntland government forces have captured large portions of territory from ISIS since announcing a major offensive against them in December.
