'Agong should delay swearing in of CJ, appellant court president till their appt legality confirmed'
Hector who is also a human rights activist further contended that the crux of the matter is that Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim 'may have ignored the recommendations of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) to get his own choice of judges to be appointed'.
'If later, it is found that the appointments were illegal for failure to strictly comply with the law, then Wan Farid, Abu Bakar and even Datuk Azizah Nawawi who was appointed as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak may be embarrassed unnecessarily,' he penned on his latest blog.
'It is best to be duly sure before proceeding with the appointment.'
Since, the enactment of the JAC Act 2009, Hector stressed that the Parliament has decided that the sitting PM will have no absolute discretion with regard to appointment of judges.
In other words, the PM is restricted from viewing the vetted names of candidates who have been approved and recommended by the JAC.
This has to do with the earlier controversies sparked by the Lingam Tape Scandal 2007 which was coincidentally exposed by PMX himself in his then capacity as the de facto PKR president.
In a nutshell, the scandal revealed that external parties could and may have influenced the appointment of judges or even the judges that heard certain cases. As solution to the issue, the JAC Act 2009 was tabled.
'The JAC will as soon as a vacancy is apparent start working to identify persons/judges whom they will recommend to the PM who will then advise the Agong to appoint,' stressed Hector who is also the co-founder of NGO Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture (MADPET).
'As the JAC would reasonably act FAST so we don't end up with a vacancy (or a prolonged vacancy), was it PMX who delayed the appointment process after having received the JAC's recommendations?
'Did he fail to advice the Agong to appoint judges when vacancies arise?'
On this note, Hector pointed to the following:
The nine-month delay in appointing a new Chief Judge of the High Court of Malaya;
The delay that caused unfilled vacancies of judges in the High Court, Court of Appeal and the Federal Court (more than 29 + 2 vacancies); and
The delay in the appointment of the Chief Justice and Court of Appeal president, both of whom had retired by July 2.
'Did PMX ignore the recommendation of the JAC which would reasonably have been made way before the CJ retired (given that there was 16-17 days delay before the appointment of Wan Farid and Abu Bakar),' queried Hector.
'Did PMX cause another JAC to sit thereafter to make new recommendations which may be a breach of the JAC Act 2009?
'Amid these many uncertainties, it's best that ALL these doubts be resolved before the Agong appoints the new Chief Justice or appellant court president.' – July 23, 2025

TunM challenges PMX to hold GE to prove his mandate but instead told to spend his twilight years in peace
THE nation's chief gauntlet thrower is at it again – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has openly challenged his once protégé and current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to dissolve parliament and to hold snap elections. Posting on his Facebook page, the centurion sarcastically applauded PMX for his bravery in challenging the opposition to table a motion of 'no confidence' in the Dewan Rakyat. The twice former premier stated the reason for PMX's boldness was that the latter knew the motion would not succeed. This is simply because many parliamentarians feared reprisals if they did not back Anwar and the Madani government. The longest serving PM in the world also claimed that there were those who would end up behind bars if they withheld support for PMX, clearly referring to UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was controversially granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) for his 47 graft-linked charges. The removal of budgetary provisions was also used as a weapon to intimidate MPs, hence the support within the Dewan Rakyat was based on fear. 'Retire for good, TunM' To further illustrate this climate of intimidation, Dr Mahathir also claimed that UMNO members were warned against joining the Turun Anwar rally on July 26. The elderly statesman who lost his deposit in the 2022 national polls went on to argue that PMX needs to seek legitimacy by dissolving parliament and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate. After all, his once-disciple-turned-nemesis is only in Putrajaya because he interfered with the trial of certain political figures to garner their party's support in Parliament. Moreover, it was argued that PMX has nothing to fear as his sycophants had reported a low turnout for the Turun Anwar protest. As expected, there were plenty of reactions to the post with it having already generated 14K likes, 1K shares and 7.3K comments at the time of writing. One commenter pleaded with Dr Mahathir who had administered Malaysia for '22 years and 22 months' to use his influence in nation-building instead by focusing on 'economy, peace and growth'. Others were less diplomatic, pointing out that Tun M would never be happy even if PMX won the 16th General Election (GE16) for a second term. It would then be an endless cycle of demands for national polls followed by calls for a no confidence ad nauseum, claimed one commenter. Another called for patience as polls were just two years away. Dr Mahathir could then set a new record in Langkawi by being the oldest electoral candidate ever. He also chided the former Bersatu and Pejuang founder that he could be the first ex-premier to lose a deposit twice! It was also pointed out that the electorate had already rejected both Dr Mahathir and his progeny in the last election when they both lost their deposits. But the centenarian's ultra-thick hide prevents him from acknowledging this. One commenter advised Dr Mahathir to let PMX carry forward the nation in a fast-changing digital world, believing the country is on good hands. He also contended that the wealth of the latter's offspring will be untouched so long as investigations show they are not ill-gotten. One netizen perhaps offered the best advice to the elder statesman – 'Tun's era has past, be aware that the country needs change'. – Aug 1, 2025

Is Malaysia harbouring Jakarta's wanted ‘gasoline godfather' Riza Chalid a.k.a. 'Indonesian version of Jho Low'?
THE opposition has seemingly demanded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to explain his actual connection with oil tycoon Muhammad Riza Chalid who is now a key suspect in the high-profile corruption case involving Indonesian state-owned oil and gas giant Pertamina. Following the recently-concluded 13th Annual Consultation between Malaysia and Indonesia, PAS activist Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff claimed that even the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) coordinator Boyamin Saiman had urged President Probowo Subianto to seek PMX's consent to extradite Riza to Indonesia. 'According to Boyamin, Riza now resides in Malaysia and had a friendly relationship with PMX before he became PM,' the Central PAS Information Committee Research and Policy Department director penned on his Facebook page. 'It was reported on Oct 2, 2022 (prior to the 15th General Election) that PMX brought Riza to meet the Sultan of Kedah. In a ceramah, (now Home Minister) Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail conformed it was true that PMX brought Riza but only as a friend. 'I, for one, have never come across anyone deliberately bringing someone they only 'know in general' to meet the palace.' PMX acknowledges 'friendship' For the record, Indonesian news portal Tempo cited PMX as saying on Tuesday (July 29) that Putrajaya does not interfere in the legal affairs involving Riza. Speaking during a meeting with several editors-in-chief in Jakarta, PMX acknowledged knowing and having met Riza Chalid but emphasised, 'Let the legal process in Indonesia continue'. But he did not explicitly respond to questions regarding Riza's presence in Malaysia. Recall that on July 12, Indonesia's Attorney General's Office (AGO) had named Riza as a suspect in a corruption case pertaining to fuel imports at subsidiaries of its state-owned oil and gas giant Pertamina that incurred trillions in state losses. This came about as investigators at the Office of the Assistant Attorney General for Extraordinary Crimes had found enough evidence to name the tycoon a suspect amid their investigation into the case in which seven suspects, including Riza's son Kerry Adrianto, were arrested in February. Following this, Indonesian news agency Antara reported on July 21 that the country's Immigration and Corrections Ministry has traced Riza's last-known whereabouts to Malaysia. According to the ministry, Riza had departed Indonesia on Feb 6 for Malaysia and had not returned since. Elaborating further, Nurul Islam also highlighted a report by opposition-slant MalaysiaNow news portal which claimed that Riza had opened a rare earth elements (REE) mining company on the day PMX became PM. 'As a result of the check, I found that there is a company Triple Golden Innovation Sdn Bhd (registration number 1489064-K) which was registered on Nov 23, 2022 which is the day before PMX was sworn in. This may be a coincidence,' added the PAS man. – Aug 1, 2025 Main image credit: Anwar Ibrahim/Facebook; kumparancom/Instagram

MMA star McGregor loses appeal over rape civil case in Ireland
DUBLIN, Aug 1 — Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor lost an appeal in Ireland on Thursday over a civil court ruling last year awarding damages to a woman who accused him of rape. Three judges at the Court of Appeal in Dublin dismissed all the grounds for appeal raised by McGregor, 36. Jurors at Dublin's High Court ain November awarded damages of almost €250,000 (RM1.2 million) to Nikita Hand, 35, who alleged that McGergor raped her in a hotel in the Irish capital in 2018. The court heard allegations that McGregor 'brutally raped and battered' Hand. The Irish sports star has insisted they had consensual sex. However Hand lost an assault lawsuit against a second man. Following the November ruling, McGregor was ordered to pay the entire costs of the case, estimated at around €1.5 million. He appealed the jury's decision, seeking a re-trial of the civil case against him. McGregor, a vocal figure in the Irish anti-immigration movement who in March met US President Donald Trump in the White House during a Saint Patrick's Day visit, was not in court during a month of appeal hearings. His legal team argued that judicial errors occurred in the original trial, including in how he was cross-examined. After the ruling, Hand told reporters that the appeal had 'retraumatised' her but that she can now 'finally move on and try to heal'. 'To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please don't be silenced, you deserve to be heard, you also deserve justice,' she said. Nicknamed 'The Notorious,' McGregor is one of the biggest stars in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial arts circuit, formerly holding the featherweight and lightweight titles. The Irishman was sued in a US court in January, accused of sexual assault at an NBA game in Miami in 2023. He has announced plans to run in Ireland's presidential election this year. The vote to elect the country's next president — a largely ceremonial role without executive power — must be held by mid-November but he faces a number of steep hurdles to get on the ballot. — AFP
