Lions quest for clean sweep of brave Wallabies on track

Perth Now5 days ago
The British and Irish Lions' quest for a 3-0 Test series domination of the Wallabies for the first time in 121 years remains in play.
It is not just the result of the opening Test at Suncorp Stadium, a 27-19 win by the Lions, but the fact there is still a lot of improvement left in the visitors after it appeared they would run away with Saturday night's match.
They led 24-5 in the 42nd minute before the Wallabies found their mojo and dominated the rest of the game.
Coach Andy Farrell said before the match that his squad was in a "good place" and referred to the fact he was able to leave out star back-rowers Jac Morgan and Henry Pollock, who did make his final 23 for the Brisbane Test.
Farrell won the World Club Challenge with Wigan Warriors in 1994 in rugby league against Brisbane in the Queensland capital, but said winning this Test would be "bigger".
It would be another level to win 3-0, like the famous 1904 Lions side, but his team is more than capable.
The southern end of Suncorp Stadium was a sea of red and in full voice. It may as well have been Wembley, with the loudest support for the away side.
They had plenty to cheer about.
The Lions were just too powerful in the opening half. Prop Ellis Genge and flanker Tom Curry were steamrollers early, and the Wallabies had no answer.
The Lions would have been in a dominant position earlier, but they had not reckoned on the heroics of Wallabies winger Max Jorgensen.
Jorgensen hung on with dear life after a great chase to deny Lions centre Huw Jones a try, then scored at the other end after a wonder leap to snare a bomb, followed by a 25m burst.
Those highlights were few and far between for the Wallabies as the Lions dominated, with No.10 Finn Russell controlling play with his boot and sublime passing game.
There was a moment to savour for 28-year-old Melbourne-born inside centre Sione Tuipolotu, who scored the opening try of the series for the Lions.
The former Rebels star qualified for Scotland through a grandmother from Greenock, and had a return to his country of birth to remember.
Tuipolotu had a blinder and put forward a strong claim to stay there for the rest of the series.
If not for handling errors, the wasteful visitors would have piled on more points.
Pollock lit the fuse before the Test by saying the Lions would be satisfied with nothing less than a clean sweep, and that goal is certainly within their grasp, but the Wallabies showed it would be no easy feat.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin confirms ‘cheeky text' to Joe Daniher as comeback rumours swirl

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has admitted he sent a cheeky text message to Joe Daniher in an audacious bid to lure the premiership player out of retirement. 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary exclusively revealed the Demons approached Daniher as they look to fix their forward woes. 'Melbourne and coach Simon Goodwin are attempting to convince Joe Daniher to return to the AFL next season, less than 12 months after he called it quits,' Cleary told 7NEWS on Monday night. 'The 31-year-old has spent recent months in Europe and lives in northern New South Wales, but it hasn't stopped Goodwin and the Dees making a pitch. 'Goodwin was an assistant coach at the Bombers for two years with Daniher, while Dees forward Jake Melksham — currently in the form of his life — previously called him a teammate. 'It is still seen as unlikely, however the approach highlights how keen the Demons are to bolster their key forward stocks.' Goodwin confirmed he touched base with Daniher, but said the 31-year-old was happy in retirement. 'I might have sent him a cheeky text message just to check in with big Joe,' Goodwin said on Fox Footy's AFL 360. 'I obviously coached Joe at Essendon in my early days as a coach and sent him a message just to make sure he was enjoying retirement as much as I thought he would. 'The answer was pretty clear - he is enjoying it. It (the pursuit) was pretty short-lived.' The coach added that they will leave 'no stone unturned' in making their list better in the off-season. 'Whether that be through the draft, through trade, through developing our players on our current list in terms of how we look and how we play,' he said. 'So we're going to leave no stone unturned in how we go about getting better and Joe was a sneaky text but he laughed it off pretty quick.' A notoriously private and unique character, Daniher famously shocked the footy world by calling time on his career in the aftermath of his second club's premiership success last year. The enigmatic, match-winning left-footer had arguably the best season of his career in 2024, but walked away from the lucrative contract he still had at the Lions to retire. Daniher, who was drafted to Essendon as a father-son selection in 2012, was critical to the Lions' success in 2024, and almost dragged them over the line against Collingwood in the previous year's decider. He left the game with 395 goals from 204 games across his time at Brisbane and Essendon. 'I retire knowing I gave my absolute all to the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, and I am extremely proud of what I achieved individually and as a team,' Daniher said last October, less than a week after the flag. 'I am tremendously grateful for the opportunities given to me by both Brisbane and Essendon and I want to thank both clubs and their incredible fans for their support. 'It's been an incredible journey here at the Brisbane Lions to go from a club that was really struggling at the bottom of the ladder to winning a premiership. 'As I finish up my career, I do so with the club in a great position on and off the field and I can't wait to see the Brisbane Lions experience more success in the future. 'I am beyond excited by the squad we have at the Lions and especially the young talent we have coming through that are the future stars of this club. 'I want to thank everyone that has played a part in my AFL career and helping me become the player and person I am today.' Following his retirement, Lions coach Chris Fagan revealed that it was after the 2023 grand final that Daniher first told the coach of his desire to walk away. In a meeting after that loss to the Magpies, Daniher told Fagan that had the Lions won that game, he would have hung the boots up there and then. 'Last year after the grand final, Joey gave me a call and said, 'Can we have a meeting?' So I caught up with him,' Fagan said at Brisbane's best and fairest last year. 'And he said to me, 'You know, if we had have won this week, I was going to retire'. 'I thought, 'Geez, I hope he's not going to retire (now)'. 'But he said, 'But I'm going to play for one more year, and I hope we can win a premiership'. I'm so pleased that that's happened, Joey, that you've got to go out on the back of winning a premiership.'

AFL news Eddie McGuire fires a fresh shot at Andy Maher and The Front Bar in footy's TV wars

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Eddie McGuire just couldn't help himself. The catfighting among the AFL's media shows has been at an all-time high in 2025, largely sparked by a host of big names leaving Nine for Channel 7, including Kane Cornes, Craig Hutchison and Caroline Wilson. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. It has become common for journalists and ex-footy players to take shots at each other across television and radio, including Cornes' high-profile feud with 7 stablemate Dale Thomas among others. Wilson and Hutchison had their own slanging match on Monday night after the former had a dig at Hutchy's decision to sack some beloved staff from RSN following his $3.25 million takeover of the radio station. The Front Bar, hosted by (left to right) Sam Pang, Mick Molloy and Andy Maher, copped some heat this week. Photo: Supplied It's not often that Channel 7's laidback show, The Front Bar, gets into the crosshairs, but McGuire couldn't resist firing a shot at the program this week from his offering, Footy Classified. It all stemmed from The Front Bar host Andy Maher's public run-in with a spectator at last week's clash between Carlton and Melbourne at the MCG. Surprisingly, the incident wasn't brought up on Wednesday night's show, stunningly given a pass by comedians Mick Molloy and Sam Pang. But footage surfaced over the weekend of Maher getting caught up in ugly scenes while sitting in the stands watching his beloved Blues. Footage of the incident showed a fellow spectator leave his seat and walk over to Maher before leaning over the presenter to engage with him. A drunk fan had words for Andy Maher before the patron was kicked out. Photos: Supplied Fans in the vicinity can be seen calling for security to remove the individual as a woman in a brown jacket attempts to de-escalate the situation. The 61-year-old Maher remained seated throughout the nearly two-minute ordeal before MCG security ultimately separated the man from Maher and escorted him out of the area, which was met with widespread applause from those seated nearby. Maher later had some strong words for the situation on SEN, asking: 'Why do you have to come along and get yourself munted and then make a fool of yourself and ruin everyone else's experience.' This is where McGuire steps in. Right before the closing credits on Footy Classified, McGuire attempted to demonstrate he was going to show some restraint, before firing off his own shot at Maher. 'All right guys. I was going to say something about a story that was coming up with Andy Maher, but I'll let it go til next week,' he said. 'I don't need to have a blue with anybody at the moment. 'But if you're hosting a show called The Front Bar, don't complain about people drinking at the footy.' Way to let it go, Eddie. Eddie McGuire (right) took a pot shot at Andy Maher. Photos: Channel 7/Channel 9 McGuire's comments come after Maher spoke about the incident on SEN, where he stated the whole situation had been blown out of proportion. 'Whoever has told you that story, they're going a little over the top,' he said. Aussie basketball icon Andrew Gaze said he heard Maher had been involved in a 'heated exchange'. 'From what I hear, and I've heard this from a number of different sources, you were virtually assaulted at the football as well,' Gaze said on 'The Run Home With Gazey And Andy'. 'You were involved in a heated exchange with perhaps someone who'd had perhaps a few too many beverages.' Maher said Aussie comedian Dave Hughes had also been involved. Maher told Gaze: 'Well, he (the person involved) was escorted out of the premises. It had nothing to do with me. 'I just told the fella to sit down. I said, 'Mate, you're going to get thrown out if you keep going. ' He got thrown out. 'I missed the start of it, but Dave Hughes was in the middle of it all at the start and doing a very fine job of sticking up for one of our veteran members of society, who had, apparently, drawn some unsavoury language from this bloke.' Maher said he believes the man was not a Carlton supporter. 'Hopefully he woke up the next morning feeling like a right git because he carried on like a pork chop,' Maher said. 'If he'd have just turned around and sat down and watched the last three minutes of the game and stopped doing whatever he was doing, he would have been fine.' Max Gawn praises 2019 Liam Ryan hanger as ‘one of the marks of the century' after serving as stepladder

Max Gawn rates Liam Ryan's 2019 screamer on top of his shoulders as 'one of the marks of the century' as the Eagles high-flyer eyes a slice of history at season's end. Gawn was a guest on Seven's The Front Bar on Wednesday night, where he rated Ryan's grab as the best to be taken on his back in a field that includes Western Bulldogs goalsneak Cody Weightman and Port Adelaide spearhead Mitch Georgiades. The Melbourne skipper said he was at peace with playing a part in helping Ryan secure the 2019 Mark of the Year. 'The Liam Ryan one I actually think is right up there as one of the marks of the century, and I was involved in it,' he said. 'I'm pretty happy with that.' Gawn wasn't done there in showing some love for West Coast players ahead of the Demons' clash with the Eagles next weekend, rating former ruck rival Dean Cox as the best player he'd ever seen. Ryan provided another Optus Stadium moment of magic last week in an act that could see him complete a rare double come end-of-season awards time. The 28-year-old produced a superb snap from deep in the pocket against Richmond - and got a friendly goalsquare bounce - to submit a Goal of the Year contender. If successful, Ryan would become just the second player this century to have snared both the Mark of the Year and Goal of the Year nods during their career. Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd is currently the only man in that category, having won Goal of the Year for a crafty goalsquare back-heel in 2007 before earning top grab honours with a pack mark against Melbourne the following season.
