Emerging star Elvis Smylie has locked in the defence of his Australian PGA Championship crown in Brisbane.This year's championship, co-sanctioned by the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and DP World Tour, will again be hosted by Royal Queensland Golf Club from November 27-30.The 23-year-old from the Gold Coast provided one of the major highlights of last season's summer of golf when he held off three-time champion Cameron Smith to win the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the first time.Victory propelled Smylie onto the world stage by earning him status as a fulltime member of the DP World Tour and he went on to claim the 2024-25 Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit title.

'Better than Bledisloe drought': Fox out to win for NZ
Throwing in a stinging trans-Tasman sledge for good measure, rugby-loving Ryan Fox is pledging to do his damndest to break New Zealand's 26-year Australian PGA Championship title drought. A two-time PGA Tour winner this year, Fox is the latest big name to join the field for the first Australian "major" of the summer at Royal Queensland Golf Club from November 27-30. The Canadian Open and Myrtle Beach Classic champion in 2025, Fox will return to Australia for the first time since 2022, joining fellow Kiwis Daniel Hillier and Kazuma Kobori as confirmed contenders for the Joe Kirkwood Cup. No Kiwi since the great Greg Turner in 1999 has won the Australian PGA Championship. But Fox, the son of All Blacks legend Grant Fox, reckons the drought is not half as bad as Australia's inability to claim the Bledisloe Cup since 2002. "So, yeah, 26 years. It's nearly as long as your Bledisloe drought," Fox told reporters on a teleconference on Tuesday. "I think that might be a bit more of a sore point for you guys than the Aussie PGA is for us, to be honest. "Hopefully we can change that this year and I'll certainly be giving it my best crack and I'm sure all the other Kiwis in the field will be doing the same. "We've got a strong Kiwi contingent that's going to play there this year." Now flying high after soaring to No.31 in the world, 38-year-old Fox credits two victories over the Australian summer a decade ago for being the making of his global career. He won the 2014 WA Open before roaring home with two eagles in the last three holes to edge out Cameron Smith and Matthew Millar four months later to secure his European Tour card. "I had a pretty good year in 2014 on the Aussie tour," he recalled. "Winning once is always nice, but doing it again is bit more reassuring, like it's not a fluke, and that paved the way. "I played pretty well in the New Zealand PGA straight afterwards and then, after signing with ISM, I ended up going over and getting some (secondary) Challenge (Tour) starts because of it. "And I'd literally never been to Europe at that point. "I played well in my first couple of Challenge events, managed to get a win there, and that started my career in Europe, basically. "Without those results early in 2015, I might not have got that opportunity to sign with a management company over there and get those starts and my career could have looked very, very different to what it is now. "So it's amazing what can happen in that respect. My time on the Aussie tour really set me up for success to be honest."

Ryan Fox to lead New Zealand assault on Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland
Ryan Fox broke through for his maiden PGA Tour win in 2025, then grabbed his second just weeks later, and the Kiwi star is now bringing his career-best form to Royal Queensland for this year's Australian PGA Championship. Fox, whose most recent Australian PGA tilt was in 2022, has enjoyed a stunning season in the US, winning the Myrtle Beach Classic, in his 72nd start on the PGA Tour, then doubled up with a stunning victory at the star-studded Canadian Open. His brilliant form has lifted Fox to 32 on the world rankings, one spot ahead of the highest-ranked Australian, Jason Day, and the New Zealander could be the highest-ranked player in the field at the PGA in November. 'Being part of it at the BMW Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland is something I'm very much looking forward to,' said the 38-year-old Fox, who is preparing for this week's start to the PGA Tour playoffs at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis. 'I had some good success on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia in my very early days on tour which helped to give my career a nice kick along,' he said. 'Winning one of the big tournaments like the PGA would be a real highlight. 'Brisbane is also close to home, so lots of friends and family will hopefully get the chance to come out which should make for a really enjoyable week.' Fox has won 19 times worldwide in a decorated career that includes success on the DP World Tour, which co-sanctions the Australia PGA with the PGA Tour of Australasia. He will head a Kiwi assault on the Joe Kirkwood Cup in Brisbane from November 27-30 that will also include Daniel Hillier and Kazumi Kobori. Hillier, a former British Masters winner, is 13th on the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai standings. Kobori, who like Fox is a past PGA Tour of Australasia order of merit and player of the year winner, finished third at the recent BMW International in Germany. PGA of Australia general manager of tournaments and global tour relationships Nick Dastey said having Fox, Hillier and Kobori at this year's Australian PGA Championship was a 'huge bonus'. 'Ryan is in the middle of the best year of his career, proving once again what an outstanding competitor he is by winning twice against the best in the world on the PGA Tour,' Dastey said. 'Likewise, Daniel and Kazuma have already had great results in 2025 and would no doubt love to add the BMW Australian PGA Championship to their list of achievements. 'We haven't had a Kiwi winner since Greg Turner in 1999, but with these three great contenders in the field, plus the other New Zealand pros who will join them from our tour, you definitely can't discount it this year.' Adam Scott ‘excited' to return home for Australian summer of golf
The chance to play an Australian Open at Royal Melbourne for the first time in his decorated career was too good to refuse for Adam Scott, who will return home to play in three events later this year after staying away in 2024. The 2013 Masters champion has committed to playing in not only the Open (December 4-7) but also the Australian PGA Championship (November 27-30, Royal Queensland) and the Cathedral Invitational (December 9-10, Cathedral Golf Club and Lodge). 'I feel like I've done my best my whole career to support the events in Australia, and I felt like missing one (year) would be OK, but I'm very excited to come back again and play this year,' Scott sad on Wednesday. 'I'm excited to come home to play at my home club Royal Queensland at the PGA again, and then, of course, it's very exciting to see the Australian Open move to Royal Melbourne this year for the first time in my career. 'I'm glad I'm going to get that opportunity at long last, and finishing out with Cathedral, which is a really fun way to end the year in a far more relaxed environment.' Royal Melbourne will host the Australian Open for the first time since 1991, with the field also including world No.2 Rory McIlroy, who this year secured a career Grand Slam with his win at the Masters. 'No doubt it made big headlines (overseas) that Rory was coming down to play at Australia,' Scott said. 'That pushed Royal Melbourne out there even more, and there are a fair few guys who played the Presidents Cup in 2019 at Royal Melbourne, and it's certainly gotten a lot of attention from the players right through the ranks, from the top guys on down. 'Royal Melbourne has an incredible history and reputation that a lot of guys would like to experience. 'It's got this reputation, and rightly so, of being our greatest golf course. With the announcement of Rory coming down to play, it refreshed everyone's mind how good it is. 'There has definitely been 100 times more interest in the Australian Open and the events in Australia this year.' Scott, 45, said he would plan his schedule between now and November to ensure he was feeling physically and mentally fresh in his bids to win a second Australian Open and a third Australian PGA title. 'I've learned my lesson a little bit the last couple years that I'm at the point where I can't continue pushing myself,' he said. 'It just doesn't work like it used to, so I'm going to try, to not take it easy, but plan my time a little better because I certainly want to come down and perform and give myself a shot at these great trophies at home.' Scott said this year had been frustrating for him, believing his 'good golf' had not been rewarded with wins. He was in the final group in the fourth round of June's US Open at Oakmont Country Club, only to shoot a 79 to finish in a tie for 12th. Scott then missed the cut earlier this month at The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. 'The Open was disappointing. I just played poorly on Friday (in the second round). I got out of sorts in the wind and couldn't figure it out,' he said. 'There are a lot of things I can think I'd do different. At the US Open it was disappointing to leave without a result and that's kind of been how my year's been – all my good golf has ended up not really getting the results I wanted. 'To be in the mix with nine to go at the US Open, and to be in the mix with nine to go at the PGA Championship, still gives me enough confidence that I'm doing enough of the right things. I just have to iron out a couple of the kinks to get over the line.' Meanwhile, Scott wasn't expecting LIV and America's PGA Tour to merge anytime soon as golf remains divided. 'There have really been no developments since earlier this year, so I would say, don't hold your breath,' said Scott, a player director on the PGA Tour policy board. 'The guys who have stayed at the PGA Tour have made a choice to play PGA Tour-style golf, and most of them probably would have had the opportunity to play LIV-style golf, so they've made their choices, and there's a divide, obviously.'
